Data donation as a method for investigating trends and challenges in digital media landscapes at national scale: The Danish population’s use of YouTube as an illustrative case

    No full text
This publication demonstrates how data donation can be scaled to national population level to understand trends in digital media usage and potential challenges for digital democracies. We describe and discuss the results of our novel methodological setup combining data donation and surveys about the Danish population’s use of YouTube as an illustrative case.  Through three consecutive survey steps, the study collected trace data from participants using quotas for gender, age, and education to approximate a sample representative of the adult Danish population of YouTube users, resulting in a final donated data sample of n = 1,063. This sample size is much larger than other similar data donation studies conducted. In a fourth step, these data were linked with a comprehensive post-survey including questions about YouTube use, social media use, news use, mental health, personality traits, conspiracy mentality, political views, political interest, political efficacy, and more.  The publication documents the data collection procedure and analyses response rates, screening out and drop-off at different steps of the data collection, and how well the final sample matches the adult Danish population of YouTube users (as estimated in a prior representative survey study). Furthermore, we provide a descriptive statistical overview of the donated data and discuss ethical considerations and clearance of the study. The methodological design was developed by the research team. The Danish survey institute Epinion was responsible for conducting the data collection and technical implementatio

The Circular Economy of Fishing Gear in Nordic Fisheries

    No full text
This report examines the circular economy of fishing gear in Nordic fisheries, focusing on Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Norway. It explores how end-of-life fishing gear (EOLFG) is managed, from production and use to collection, recycling, and reuse. The findings highlight key national differences, shared challenges, and innovative practices. While progress has been made, gaps remain in gear traceability, loss prevention, and recycling infrastructure. The report offers concrete, step-by-step recommendations for improving gear marking, retrieval systems, fisher participation, and regional collaboration, supporting a more sustainable and resource-efficient fishing sector

Debunking cycling myths: Realities and recommendations for Nordic planning and policy

    No full text
This publication is a culmination of the challenges, lessons learned, and good practices of cycling in the capital cities and regions of the Nordic countries. Derived from the research and discussions among network participants, this publication highlights eight common myths about the role of the bicycle as a mode of transport in the Nordic Region. Each myth is followed by an evidence-based rebuttal, confronting the inaccurate claims and uprooting the underlying problem. After each reality statement, we provide suggestions and good practices, based on both desk research and contributions from practitioners in the Nordic Cycle Power Network

Nordic funding for the arts and culture : A multilevel approach

    No full text
In this research anthology on the interplay between national and Nordic funding for culture Kulturanalys Norden has invited researchers from each Nordic country to contribute with a chapter. The publication is an independent continuation of the previous anthology Cultural policy in the Nordic welfare states – Aims and functions of public funding for culture, with contributions from the same group of researchers. Focus for the new anthology is to explore funding systems from a multi-level approach. The analyses primarily concern the interplay between money streams, rather than the interplay between actors at the Nordic and national level. Therefore, ‘interplay’ is primarily investigated in terms of overlap between different funding systems, that is, the identification of instances where funding from different systems coincide (or not). The analyses also make visible application strategies rather than financial results

December 11, 2024, NordGen arranged a conference titled ‘Nordic Conference on Genetic Resources: Possibilities and Urgency’ in Malmö, Sweden. The conference was also streamed worldwide. This report contains summaries of the conference findings and recommendations. The conference was opened by the Swedish Minister of Rural Affairs, Peter Kullgren, and the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Karen Ellemann and featured 12 speakers from a wide range of areas connected to different fields of genetic resources. About 140 participants attended the conference on-site in Malmö and almost 160 registered for the online streaming.  The conference’s morning session provided reports from the recent COP16 deliberations in Cali, Colombia followed by lectures and discussions on how climate change affects the Nordic region and how NordGen and genetic resource sin general can contribute to climate adaptation and the green transition. The afternoon sessions included insights from the business side, plant breeders, researchers etc. and provided several examples of how genetic resources contribute to a more sustainable, resilient and efficient society. The key takeaways from the conference were that genetic resources are excellent tools for the green transition. However, the Nordic collaboration needs to be maintained and communication accelerated to reach viable change

Proactively engaging citizens in European Union Cohesion Policy

    No full text
This policy paper provides key recommendations outlining ways to proactively engage citizens in EU cohesion policy processes. The recommendations are designed to support EU, national, and regional level policymakers to achieve the priority goal for the 2021-2027 EU cohesion policy programme period of bringing ‘Europe closer to citizens’. European Union (EU) Cohesion Policy is the one area of EU policy competence with the highest potential for directly engaging citizens in EU policymaking processes. While the European Commission has introduced many cohesion policy instruments that bring policymaking closer to regional and local levels, direct citizen involvement in this policy sphere remains negligible. A citizen focused approach needs to be embedded within existing cohesion policy structures to maximize the potential of cohesion policy for strengthening the connection between the EU and citizens

Vihrein siivin – lentoliikenteen sähköistymisen poliittinen etenemissuunnitelma

    No full text

Local labour market participation in a pan-Nordic context

    No full text
This paper examines local labour market participation across the Nordic Region. It contextualises and maps local labour markets in remote areas across the Nordic Region, utilising descriptive, public, and municipal-level data. It aims to enhance understanding of factors influencing labour market participation. Focus is on remote areas and seven case study areas in particular: Norðurþing and Dalvíkurbyggð in Iceland, Stord and Hammerfest in Norway, Skellefteå and Gotland in Sweden, and Åland.  Various aspects of these local labour markets are discussed, including employment rates, unemployment, and labour force participation, and explores how megatrends such as demographic shifts, technological advancements, globalisation, and climate change and the green transition impact them. This paper has been produced as a background working paper for the “Sustainable Nordic Remote Labour Markets (SUNREM)” project. SUNREM explores how local labour markets in the Nordic Region face the opportunities and challenges related to the global megatrends in general, and the green transition in particular.Sustainable Nordic Remote Labour Markets (SUNREM
