Ecosystem based management of sandeels, demersal fish and seabirds in Boreal ecosystems in Northeast Atlantic
The current project aims to explore the potential of ecosystem based management on the marine shelves at Iceland, Faroe Islands and Norway. It was found that oceanographich features like the size of the subpolar gyre or the strength of the East Icelandic Current (EIC) were of great importance to demersal fish and seabirds. The predators on fish larvae were found to be pelagic fish such as herring and mackerel, but also Norway pout was considered. A main finding, which probably is novel, was that the abundance of demersal fish could hamper the predatory effect of pelagic fish on fish larvae. The effect of demersal fish on the survival of fish larvae seemed to be less than the effect of oceanographic variables or primary production, but, nevertheless, seemed to hold a potential that should be further studied in the future
Recipe book for regional development: How to improve your community?
This report brings together practical examples and shared insights from across the Nordic region from projects and activities conducted by Nordregio, the Nordic Cross-border Committees and the Nordic Atlantic Cooperation (NORA) as part of the Nordic Cooperation Programme For Regional Development And Planning 2021–2024 (RCP). It highlights how cooperation and mutual learning can help address common challenges in the region—from demographic shifts to the green transition. What can Nordic municipalities and communities learn from contemporaries across the region? How can potentially transformational policies, strategies and initiatives be successfully transferred from one local context to another? Such are the questions underlying this report
Regional impact of higher education institutions in Nordic small towns and rural areas
Nordic regions and rural areas are under increasing pressure, facing complex and interconnected challenges such as climate change, demographic shifts, youth outmigration and a growing shortage of skilled workers in both public and private sectors. Education is widely recognised as a key tool for addressing these issues and plays a crucial role in supporting regional development. However, the contribution of educational institutions to regional development varies, depending on both the regional context and the institutional characteristics, often differing significantly between regions with strong innovation systems and those that are more peripheral. This policy brief explores how geography influences the regional development outcomes of higher education institutions (HEIs), with a particular focus on those located in rural and regional settings. It addresses the following questions: - What role do HEIs located in small towns and rural areas play in regional development and how does this role differ from that of HEIs situated in core or metropolitan areas? - What do “impact” and “efficiency” mean in the context of HEIs in smaller towns and rural areas and how can these concepts be effectively measured?

Yggdrasil – The Living Nordic City : Implementing nature-based solutions through the 3+30+300 principle
The report “Yggdrasil – The Living Nordic City” is part of the Nordic Cities Nature-Based Solutions Programme, supporting Vision 2030 to make the Nordic Region the world’s most sustainable. This initiative integrates nature-based solutions (NBS) into urban planning for sustainability, biodiversity, climate adaptation, and public health. The project evaluates the 3+30+300 principle: seeing three large trees from home, achieving 30% tree canopy cover, and ensuring public green spaces within 300 metres for all. Findings show Finland and Norway lead in compliance, while Iceland and Greenland face challenges. Recommendations focus on policy integration, native and diverse species for resilience, and equitable access to green spaces. The report highlights the principle’s flexibility and its importance in fostering sustainable, liveable Nordic cities
