Paleomagnetism of the Ordovician section of the Mishina Gora (Pskov oblast): a record of the ancient geomagnetic field and restrictions on the age of the Mishinogorsk explosive structure

    No full text
Paleomagnetic studies of the Ordovician rocks of the Mishina Gora explosive structure (Gdovsky district, Pskov region) have been carried out. Based on the results of thermal magnetic cleaning, two stable magnetization components S and P have been identified. These components have similar unblocking temperature ranges (~200–600°C), but their mean directions are statistically different the difference of their mean directions are statistically significant. Refional fold test indicates the postfolding age of the component S and prefolding age of the component P. Prefolding age of the latter is supported by the positive result of the local fold-test which has been carried out in the scale of the studied section. Comparison of the paleomagnetic pole calculated from the S component with the Apparent Polar Wander Path for the East European Platform definitely indicates the Late Permian- Early Triassic age of this component, which, in combination with the available geological observations, determines the time range of the formation of the Mishina Gora structure as ~370–250 million years ago. The ancient component of the magnetization P has the same direction as the components, which have been identified earlier in a number of coeval sections of the North-West of Russia, Estonia, and Scandinavia and which have been considered to be primary. The corresponding paleomagnetic poles are widely used in Paleozoic geodynamic and tectonic paleoreconstructions with the participation of the Baltic paleocontinent. A positive fold test result for the P component validates the use of these poles for paleoreconstructions. For the stratigraphic interval, which includes the upper Floian, Dapinian, and lower 2/3 of the Darrivilian stages, a magnetostratigraphic section has been constructed containing a single magnetozone corresponding to the reverse polarity of the geomagnetic field. Thus, the magnetostratigraphic data do not support the hypothesis of the existence of intervals of normal polarity within the Ordovician geomagnetic superchron of reverse polarity (Moyero superchron). This work was supported by the Russian Science Foundation, grant No. 20-17-00198 (sampling, analysis and interpretation of data) and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation under contract No. 14.Y26.31.0029 within the framework of the implementation of the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 220 (preparation of the article)

Ethno-territorial features of social inequality in the USA

The social fragmentation of the US population has pronounced ethno-territorial features. Using the example of ten ethnic groups of Americans of various ancestry (German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, Mexican, Cuban, Salvadoran), the spatial features of social inequality are examined. Six indicators of social well-being were considered in three areas: education, employment status and earnings. The indicators under consideration include: 1) proportion of individuals without a high school diploma; 2) proportion of individuals with a bachelor’s degree or higher; 3) proportion of individuals who are not in the labor force; 4) unemployment rate; 5) median annual earnings; and 6) proportion of individuals with income below poverty level. The states and the District of Columbia were taken as the spatial unit for analyzing the ethno-territorial heterogeneity of social inequality in the United States. The study revealed the socio-spatial heterogeneity of the US territory, determined the hierarchy of ethnic groups in terms of social well-being, and identified states that have the highest deviations from the “normal” distribution of the indicators under consideration. The results obtained make it possible to judge both the influence of ethnic origin and a specific territory on the level of social well-being of the US population. The existing social hierarchy of the considered ethnic groups is highly stable in most states. More often than not, members of a particular ethnic group living in more socially wealthy states will outperform members of the same group living in less socially wealthy states in terms of social well-being. However, this feature is not typical for all states and ethnic groups equally. This allows us to assert that in the United States, inequality between ethnic groups can acquire its own specific characteristics depending on a particular territory

    India: Focus Africa?

    No full text
The article touches upon India’s policy towards Africa. Since the Roman era Africa has always caught the attention of developed countries, as the continent was an enormous field for exploring, a complete terra incognita. Later a new wave of interest came as Africa possessed abundant resources and had connections to commercial maritime routes: the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean. Today India does its best not only to become a trusted trade and political partner for African states, but also to win their sympathies. For example, Indian leaders never tire of reminding that India — just like Africa — fought against colonialism, thereby opposing itself to the former colonial empires and emphasizing its common historical and cultural background with Africa. The author reviews Indian foreign policy, diaspora influence, and Indian military presence on the continent. Meanwhile some countries, for example the U.S. or Japan, remain wary of Chinese wide-spreading influence, especially in Africa, where a new Chinese military base was recently built. In that regard new alliances are forming, the balance of power is shifting. A comparative analysis of Indian, Chinese, and U.S. policy towards Africa was carried out, considering the prospects of international relations between Africa and its key partners

This article presents theoretical problems related to the renovation of historic buildings in Europe of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. They concern the creation of scientifically justified concepts and methods of renovation aimed at preserving the authenticity and historical significance of monuments. Historical architectural developments, including buildings from different eras, determine the individual appearance of historic European cities. Architectural monuments allow one to become aware of the originality of culture and character traits of each nation. Therefore, in the context of globalization, the study, protection and use of historical objects is one of the factors shaping the national self-awareness. Practical activities related to the adaptation of historical cultural space to contemporary needs were discussed on the example of the revalorization of a 15th-century religious complex located in the historic area of the city of Częstochowa in Poland. This area, called the “Old Town”, is one of the main elements of the compositional canvas of the town’s urban layout (beginning of the 19th century). The revalorization of the St Sigismund church complex together with the monastery buildings, due to the importance for the urban layout of the city, as well as due to its historical, cultural and religious significance, constituted an essential challenge for designers, archaeologists, historians and local authorities

Saved art: Simferopol Art Gallery in evacuation (1941–1944)

The article is devoted to the evacuation of Crimean museum collections in October, 1941. The fate of the lost pre-war collection of the Simferopol Art Gallery, which did not have time to leave the Crimea and was destroyed by fire in Kerch port, is well known. At the same time, a temporary exhibition made up of the works of the Simferopol Gallery was evacuated from Feodosiya Art Gallery along with the masterpieces of the great marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky. Prominent museum figures Nikolay S. Barsamov and Jan P. Birzgal managed to send the exhibits to Novorossiysk, then to Krasnodar. Contrary to the plans of the Committee for the Arts to take these exhibits to Stalingrad, both Crimean galleries were sent to Yerevan. At the end of 1941, Birzgal compiled a list of 50 salvaged exhibits of the Simferopol Art Gallery. Soviet art of the 1920s– 1930s is represented by the works of Igor E. Grabar, Mitrofan B. Grekov, Vladimir A. Eyfert, Peter P. Konchalovsky. The Russian landscape is represented by Vasiliy V. Baksheev, Pavel A. Radimov, Vasiliy V. Rozhdestvensky. From creative trips to Central Asia, Altai and Pamir, new works are brought by Peter I. Kotov and Peter N. Staronosov, Nikolay G. Kotov, Peter D. Pokarzhevsky, Sergei I. Pichugin. The work of Barsamov, the author of the portrait of the artist Bogaevsky (1940), is connected with Crimea. Among the rescued works are the works of Konstantin F. Bogaevsky himself, several of his industrial landscapes, and sketches for the panel Crimea (1921); Bakhchisarai landscapes by Alexander V. Kuprin, Sudak view by Alexander F. Gaush. In the postwar period, the museum workers established the affiliation of works by Ilya E. Repin, Joseph I. Oleshkevich, and Henri-Francois Riesener to the pre-war collection

The role of Russо-Byzantine antiquities collectors in the formation of museum collections at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries

    No full text
In the context of Russо-Byzantine minor arts, hoards of the Kievan Rus’ era represent a unique group of material culture artifacts, which are being thoroughly examined by academic science — archaeology and art history. The history of museum affairs have accumulated a number of studies on individual private collections, where the hoards were presented to some extent. However, there is a demand for a comprehensive coverage of the entire complex of hoards as the result of a “collecting fever” in the Russian Empire at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. The culture of this period, addressed to the styles of past eras, made objets d’art of Byzantium, Ancient Russia and neighboring cultures to be desirable items of collecting, which contributed to the activation of the antiquities market. When the antiquities used to be implemented into the private collectors’ milieu, certain tendencies of their existence in this milieu inevitably arose. This article makes an attempt to highlight beneficial and negative aspects of such tendencies, especially for humanitarian science and museum work. Among the personalities, such as A. S. and P. S. Uvarovs, D. Ya. Samokvasov, B. I. and V. N. Khanenko, V. V. Tarnovsky, A. A. Bobrinsky, A. V. Zvenigorodsky, M P. Botkin, J. P. Morgan — two groups are distinguished according to their motivations and approaches: professional archaeologists and connoisseurs of antiquities. Characteristics of structure and acquisitions of their collections in the context of archaeological excavations are given; their further history of existence and the role in the museumification of decorative and applied arts monuments are revealed. A number of problematic aspects of the collectors and antique dealers’ activity is named, such as the growth of the forgery market, the fragmentation of monuments, which used to be single complexes, as well as the issue of national values restitution

Reflections on the Hesychian lemma βουρικυπάρισσος

    Get PDF
The Greek grammarian and lexicographer, Hesychius of Alexandria (5th–6th c. CE) included a Pamphylian gloss: βουρικυπάρισσος ἡ ἄμπελος. Περγαῖοι in his dictionary of rare and dialectal words. Based on a microphilological and lexical analysis, I suggest that the Greek text should be read as follows: βουρίꞏ κυπάρισσος ἢ ἄμπελος. Περγαῖοι (“bourí: cypress or grapevine. Citizens of Perge”). The Pamphylian gloss in question represents two different borrowings of terms originating in the Near East. The first item βουρίꞏ κυπάρισσος (‘cypress’) seems to have been borrowed from Akkadian burāšu(m) ‘a kind of conifer tree; juniper or cypress’ with a Lycian intermediary (Akk. burāšu → Luw. *burašiš > Lyc. *burehi > *burhi → Pamph. βουρί), whereas the second one βουρίꞏ […] ἄμπελος (‘grapevine’) reflects a separate loanword from an Anatolian source, cf. Hitt. and Luw. muriš c. ‘a grapevine, a vine, a cluster or bunch of grapes or other fruit’. The Pamphylian dialect of Ancient Greek represents an extraordinary idiom, which was used in the neighbourhood of numerous Anatolian languages such as Lycian, Milyan, Sidetic, Pisidian and Cilician. It is therefore not surprising that the Pamphylian Greeks borrowed a number of cultural terms for plants from an Anatolian Indo-European source, as well as from Akkadian or other West Semitic languages via Luwian and Lycian. Additionally, other possible Anatolian borrowings into Ancient Greek (e. g. Gk. dial. βωληνή ‘a type of grapevine’, μῶλαξ ‘id.’ vs. Hittite maḫlaš c. ‘grapevine, Vitis vinifera L.’) are mentioned and reviewed

Dynamics of weight loss of dolomite dropouts at different stages of dissolution in Albic Retisol

    Get PDF
In a laboratory experiment in 2020, the dynamics of the decrease in mass of large particles of dolomite dropouts in acidic Albic Retisol was established. Dolomite dropouts were collected from the landfill of a road construction factory. The results of the laboratory experiment showed that after 114 days of composting, the loss of dolomite mass ranged from 8.7 to 34.2 % of its initial content. The loss of mass of particles during composting from 114 to 224 days slowed down and fluctuated, depending on the variant, from 2.2 to 5.1 % of the initial mass of dolomite. The mechanism of weathering was considered and the factors enhancing the rate of dissolution of dolomite dropouts in the soil were revealed. Linear empirical dependencies of the rate of dissolution of dolomite in soil at different stages of the experiment were developed. Clustering of the developed models was carried out according to the absolute values of the rate of decrease in the mass of particles in the vessels. When selecting the dose of application of large particles of dolomite for reclamation of acidic soils and duration of their action, it is recommended to take into account the duration of time the dolomite spent in the landfill.Preparation of this paper was supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia (contract No. 451-03- 9/2021-14/2000/1)
