A HISTORY OF SHARON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
  Sharon United Methodist Church is a living example of a country church. 
The first Methodist Society was organized in 1820. The first site used by the 
worshipers was a brush arbor on Flagreed Creek. It is believed the land for 
this original site was given or acquired from the Samuel L. Lochridge estate 
and that the land was deeded to the Sharon congregation by his eldest 
daughter, Miss Fannie Lochridge (1830-1913). The original church plot 
consisted of about eight acres with an acre being added to the cemetery by 
James Andrew and David Gilliam. In 1966, Henry Newton Manning 
conveyed three acres, bringing the total site to twelve acres.
The present church is the fourth house of worship built by the Sharon 
congregation. The first was a log meeting house. This was probably built in 
the early part of the nineteenth century. It was located about two hundred 
yards from the present building. Near the church was a cemetery with rocks 
used as grave markers. A second log building, called the Flagreed Meeting 
House, was situated where the cemetery is today. There was a school 
building adjacent to the church. In the summer, camp meetings were held in 
the wooded area near the home of Mrs. J. R. Brown.
  The third church was built of lumber in 1830. It faced the cemetery, a short 
distance in front of the present building. It was built in the old style with a 
box pulpit about eight feet high in the center of the church. The minister 
ascending the staircase to the door on the left side. After closing the door, if 
he was as small man, he was out of sight when seated. In 1859 the church 
was repaired and a modern pulpit installed. When plans were made to build a
new church, this third building was torn down by two members, Mr. Jim 
Knox and Mr. John Penny, and used to build barns. 
  Under the pastorate of Rev. William Hamilton Ariail the congregation 
resolved they would build a new church. This was under the direction of a 
building committee composed of L. A. Ramey, J. H. Penny, J. H. Walker, R. 
W. Knox, James Knox and N. R. Schram with the Gilliam brothers as 
contractors. The fourth church was completed in 1895 with a debt of $200 
unpaid.  
              
  In 1898 under the pastorate of Rev. Henry Stokes, with the help of the 
faithful Christian men and women, the debt was paid in full. On August 20, 
1899 a new Sharon Church was dedicated. Dr. John A. Rice was chosen to 
preach the dedication sermon. After the opening service of song by the choir,
Rev. Rice read an old testament lesson from the 28th chapter of Genesis and 
part of the 15th chapter of Luke as a new testament lesson. For one hour and 
five minutes the reverend held the large congregation’s attention in spite of 
the severe heat. After the service C.V. Hammond from Abbeville read a short
history of old Sharon Church. The church was then presented to five 
members of the Board of Trustees: L. A. Ramey, J. G. Walker, J. E. Riley, R. 
W. Knox and N. R. Schram. Then Rev. Rice led the prayer of dedication. 
  The first couple to be married in the new church was Mr. & Mrs. Robert O. 
Edwards, followed by Mr. & Mrs. Tom Maxwell, Mr. & Mrs. Foster McLane
and Mr. & Mrs. Warren Mundy.
  As far as anyone knows, the first three churches had no musical 
instruments. Sharon’s first musical instrument was a melodeon, the second 
an organ and then a piano. Miss Annie Gibert, a member of Lebanon 
Presbyterian Church played the organ for a number of years.
  Like most small churches, Sharon has always been on a circuit. In 1835 
Sharon became part of the Cokesbury district in the Abbeville circuit served 
by Rev. Joseph Wheeler. Over the years the circuit included Mt. Carmel, 
Bells Chapel, Cokesbury, Gilgal, Bethel, Grace and Shiloh churches. One of 
the earlier pastors would walk from Mt. Carmel. He would come on 
Saturday and someone would take him home Sunday evening or Monday 
morning.          
  For a number of years when Sharon was on a charge with Bells Chapel, 
Gilgal and Bethel, services were on first and third Sundays in the morning 
and at 3 pm on second and fourth Sundays. In the early 1900s Sharon 
became part of the Anderson District. The Abbeville circuit was dissolved in 
1944 and Sharon formed a charge with Grace. Shortly after that, during the 
pastorate of John Wofford Cooley, Sharon had services every Sunday 
morning. 
  In 1950 Sharon formed a charge with Shiloh United Methodist Church. 
Sharon has been in its present charge with Smyrna United Methodist Church 
since 2005. In July 2021 we welcomed a new pastor, Richard Powell and his 
wife, Kay.
  The original parsonage still stands in the Sharon community in sight of the 
church, southward. This home was built by the Sharon and Bethel 
congregations. The land was given by Mr. Tom McNeill and consisted of one
and a half acres. Rev. William Henry Murray was the first pastor to live there
about 1912. The last pastor to live in the original parsonage was Rev. Wm. 
Harold Smith about 1942.
  In 1939, according to a WPA (Works Progress Administration) survey done 
by Ben Carlton, the pastor was Rev. Jessie H. Manley with 107 members. 
Sunday School was held every other week with 40 members. The Women’s 
Missionary Society was organized in 1925, previously called the Ladies Aid 
Society, with Mrs. J. R. Brown serving as secretary. The church’s annual 
budget was $433. 
  Since 1942 Sharon has seen considerable growth in finances and many 
improvements to our church building. In 1946 electric lights were installed. 
Sunday School rooms were added in 1948. In 1949 wood and coal heating 
were replaced with a gas heating system. A Hammond organ was purchased 
in 1957. New Sunday School rooms and a fellowship hall were built in 1961 
with a dedication service by Rev. Harmon Leslie Hoffman. The church 
building was bricked in 1964. A Ground Breaking service was held in 
November 1967 for a new parsonage. Rev. Samuel B. Coker was the first 
resident. A Mortgage Burning service was held in May 1976.
  In 1979 the front vestibule was enclosed with new swinging doors. A new 
porch and steps were built. In June 1980 a 29 foot steeple was erected with a 
3 foot copper cross (donated by the UMYF), giving Sharon its current 
appearance. A picnic shelter was built in August of 1995. In February 1996 
new stained glass windows were installed in the sanctuary.
  Worship services have been enhanced by many improvements as well. A 
Baptismal Font was purchased in 1977. Hugh and Leah Prince donated a 
new piano in 1986. A new speaker system was installed in 1987. In February 
1990 new hymnals were purchased in honor or memory of church members. 
A new Hammond organ was dedicated in April 2013 using memorial gifts. 
     
Many more improvements have been made to Sharon over the years thanks 
to the generosity and dedication of the United Methodist Women and the 
United Methodist Youth Fellowship as well as other members. 
 Sharon United Methodist Church has been an active congregation for 202 
years. Today we have about 89 members on the role, averaging 27 in 
attendance each Sunday. With the continued support of faithful members and
God’s Grace we hope to continue serving Christ for many years to come.
