3517 Five Chop Road, 10 miles east of Orangeburg, 
SC on US Highway 301 , near Interstate 26.

A Brief History 
White House United 
Methodist Church 
ESTABLISHED 1788 
A Histo1y of Service 
White House Uni ted Methodist Church was established 
as a place of worship in 1788. In Lhe 220 years of history, 
it has been a p lace where people came together for 
worship and to have their lives changed by the power 
of God. These persons have gone forth to the community 
and the world . 
As early as 1786, a basis may have been laid for the 
Methodist society which, two years later, would be 
worshiping al "white meeting house" in the Four Holes 
section of Orangeburg County. For, in 1786 Issac Smith 
and Henry Willis enroute to Charleston from a conference 
which had been convened in February at Salisbury, 
North Carolina, passed through the Four Holes and 
Cattle Creek sections of the county. It has been proposed 
that in these two areas they initiated Methodist societies. 
Officially, Methodism in the state was still unborn. 
The purpose of Willis and Smith's Charleston visit was 
to attend the organizing conference of the Methodist 
Episcopal Church in South Carolina. 
By 1788 an organized society was functioning at 
"white meeting house" on the branch waters of Middle 
Pen Creek. On October 1, 1790 Daniel Syfret deeded 
a four acre tract of land to the Methodist Episcopal 
Church -- the same tract of land on which the first building 
and the two subsequent ones have been erected. 
The earliest structure to serve the society had been 
completed prior to the Deed of Conveyance, for it 
explicitly detailed "a house of worship thereon Situate 
(sic) .. " 
Eventually the four acre tract was registered and 
recorded with county authorities significantly in deed 
Book No. 1, page 317, on the 10th of November, 1792. 
Contrary to a popular local legend, Bishop Francis 
Asbury did not found White House Church. Although 
he probably knew of the existence of the society, it was 
not until years after its organization that the first and 
greatest bishop of American Methodism visited the society. 
On December 24, 1801 , the Bishop made the 
following entry in his journal: "Four Holes is a name 
given to a river because there are four sinks or holes 
upon the banks; here at White Meeting House I 
preached on 2 Peter 3: 18 'But grow in grace. "' Here he 
outlined his sermon. "1. We should have grace planted 
or sown in our souls. 2. Grow in the habits and exercises 
of grace. 3. Rules by which we should grow in grace. 4. 
By what rules we may judge of our growth in grace." 
He concluded the entry by noting that that evening he 
lodged at Jacob Dantzler's. 
Again on January 10, 1803, Bishop Asbury noted: 
"We rode 12 miles to Dantzler's. On Tuesday I 
preached at the White Meeting House on 2 Corinthians 
7:1." 
Following its organization, White Meeting House was 
undoubtedly placed on the Edisto Circuit, then a part of 
the Saluda District. With the possible exception of five 
years from 1800-1805 when an add itional circuit 
designated "Orangeburg Circuit" was in existence. 
White House remained a part of the Edisto Circuit. In 
1812 the Edisto Circuit was formed into a district and 
another Orangeburg Circuit was formed under the new 
Edisto District. In 1825 the Orangeburg Circuit was 
placed under the Charleston District. In 1860 the 
Orangeburg District was formed from pa rts of the 
Columbia and Charleston Districts. 
Francis Asbury was not the only Methodist celebrity 
to have visited the White House Society during its early 
period. Lorenzo Dow, "an eccentric, freelance 
Methodist Preacher," to use the words of the late Albert 
Deems Betts (History of South Carolina Methodism). is 
recorded as having visited only two places in South 
Carolina - Beauty Spot in Marboro County and White 
House. Dow, born in Coventry, Connecticut on October 
18, 1777, entered the Methodist itinerancy in 1798 but 
remained a part of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 
only a year. Shortly after 1799 he departed for Ireland 
in response to a "special call." For over thirty years 
Lorenzo Dow travelled and preached independently 
adhering to a terrific pace. He died suddenly al 
Washington on February 2, 1834. . 
The many circuit preachers who served the White 
House congregation may not have gained the national 
prestige of Asbury or the reputation of Dow. And yet, 
few stand as prominent in our Methodist history as 
William May Wightman or William Capers, both of 
whom served the White House Society early in their 
ministries. Both became bishops. 
William Capers (1790-1855) served the Orangeburg 
Circuit in 1812. He joined the Conference in 1808 
although he had prepared for a career in law. Capers, 
elected to the Episcopacy at the General Conference of 
1846, was the first native South Carolinian to become 
a Methodist Bishop. 
William May Wightman (1808 - 1882) joined the 
Conference in 1828 at the age of twenty. A year later, 
1829, he was appointed to the Orangeburg Circuit. At 
that time the White House congregation was one of 
twenty-six preaching places on the Orangeburg Circuit, 
and four weeks were required to cover the entire circuit. 
The young Mr. Wightman wrote the following to his 
brother about his experiences in the Orangeburg area. 
"Methodism has taken this part of the country, and it 
fl ourishes luxuriantly, like some towering oak -- the 
pride of the forest, which has braved the storms of a 
century, and its spreading branches afford a shelter for 
hundreds." William May Wightman was elected to the 
Episcopacy in 1866. It is interesting to people of the 
Orangeburg area to note that Bishop Wightman's 
mother, Matilda Will iams Wightman, born in Plymouth, 
England who, as a child, was often in the presence of 
John Wesley is buried in the old Limestone Church 
cemetery in Orangeburg County. 
The building which presently houses the White 
House Church congregation was built in 1850 - eleven 
years prior to the beginning of the War Between the 
States. It is the third structure to serve the society. Little 
is known of the two earlier buildings. However, it is 
bel ieved that, at best, they were small, simple log 
houses. 
With the exception of a few added features including 
the choir loft and the stained glass windows, the interior 
of the sanctuary is structurally the same as ii was in 
1850. The pews and the altar rail are part of the original 
structure; however a coat of mahogany paint covers the 
original finish. 
The eight globe, filigree chandelier and the pulpit 
lanterns are part of the lighting fixtures of the 1850 
structure. They have since been wired for electricity. 
Of special interest is the 1894 Church School Library. 
Of the ninety-four books of the original 1894 library, 
thirty-nine are presently in the possession of the 
church. Fifty additional volumes were acquired in 1910. 
Of these, eighteen remain. 
A special cabinet built in 1894 by Mr. Lawrence Connor 
to house the library is still used to store the remaining 
volumes. The church also possesses the record book of 
the 1894 library showing checkouts by members of the 
church and containing a list of the ninety-four volumes. 
The ·Church Bible currently in use is an 1876 
Philadelphia International Exhibition Bible. It has been 
fully restored to its original beauty. Other Bibles of 
historical interest have been on display from time to 
time in the sanctuary of the Church. 
Numerous record books, minutes of meetings, and 
miscellaneous historical documents are in the archives 
collection of the Historic White House Commission 
and are displayed during open houses. 
When notable circuit riders were in the area to 
address the society, it was necessary to adjourn to a 
nearby oak tree to accommodate the overflow crowd. A 
board was attached to the trunk of the oak to serve as 
a lectern, and the visiting speaker mounted a bench to 
address the crowd. Asbury preached from this oak on 
both his visits. 
That section of the trunk bearing a scar where the 
board was attached is on display in the sanctuary of the 
church . From other sections of the tree, two gavels 
used by the South Carolina Annual Conference of the 
Methodist Church were made. 
Among the graves in the cemetery at White House 
Church are those of The Reverend and Mrs. Charles 
Wilson . Mr. Wilson was born in Barnwell County on 
November 21 , 1802. He joined the South Carolina 
Conference in 1831 and served as a Methodist 
preacher for forty-three years until his death on April 
14, 1873. Two-thirds of his ministry was spent as a 
missionary to the Black people among the plantations 
of South Carolina. 
From 1788 until today While House Church has 
made slow but steady progress. 1938 marked the 
150th anniversary of the church. Bishop Clare Purcell 
had been engaged to speak at the celebration. How-
ever, it was not unti l 1940 that White House had made

necessary repairs and completed work on the sanctuary 
in preparation for the celebration. Five church school 
rooms had been added to the building. 
By 1940 Bishop W.T. Watkins had replaced Bishop 
Purcell. Bishop Watkins accepted his predecessor's 
appointment. And thus, on June 16, 1940, two years 
past its 150 year mark, White House Church observed 
its 150th anniversary. 
In 1957 another addition to the facility was completed. 
A fellowship hall was completed near the church. 
In preparation for its 175th anniversary in 1963, the 
interior was repainted and new carpeting laid. Bishop 
Paul Hardin of the South Carolina Conference was 
present for the celebration. 
In 1952 White House Church was the scene of a 
most significant historical occasion. Arnold Murray, last 
Confederate veteran in South Carolina, was laid to rest 
in a state military funeral to honor all veterans of that 
war. Governor James F. Byrnes was present to represent 
the state as was J. Strom Thurmond under whose 
administration plans for the funeral and state recognition 
were begun. 
Mr. Samuel Latimer, who was then editor of The State, 
delivered the funeral eulogy in memory of all those men 
who fought in the War Between the Slates. Over five 
thousand people were present for that funeral marking it 
as one of the largest in the history of South Carolina. 
The worship service was led by the Reverend 
William S. Jones, grandson of the wartime chaplain of 
General Robert E. Lee, and The Reverend J.H. Eaddy, 
pastor of While House Church. The military portion of 
the service was under the command of Major General 
James C. Dozier, Adjutant General of South Carolina. 
The funeral service and ceremony was the first of its 
kind to be held by a Southern state to pay official homage 
to its Confederate soldiers at the death of the last 
survivor. Mr. James A. Rogers, then Executive Vice 
President of the South Carolina Farm Bureau, served 
as chairman of the committee which planned the 
funeral service and state recognition. Mr. Murray was 
106 years old at the time of his death. 
In 1968 the Administrative Board of White House 
United Methodist Church approved the formation of a 
church-related committee, the Historic White House 
Commission, to supervise the preservation and 
promotion of the Church's history. The Reverend Roger 
M. Gramling has served as Chairman of the Commission 
since its organization. 
In the summer of 1972 the Historic White House 
Commission succeeded in having a State Historical 
marker placed at White House Church. The marker is 
one of many erected by local sponsoring groups in 
conjunction with the South Carolina Department of 
Archives and History to designate prominent historical 
sites through the state. 
In 1974 White House Church was named to the 
National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. 
Department of the Interior, Parks Division. It was the 
fourth Orangeburg County site to be added to the 
National Register. 
Recent physical improvements to the church have 
included the refurbishing of the interior of the sanctuary 
and the enlargement of the Fellowship Hall. A basket-
ball court and barbeque cookhouse have also been 
built near the Fellowship Hall. 
White House United Methodist Church is one of three 
churches on the Bowman Charge of the South Carolina 
Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. The 
membership of the church currently stands at 115 full 
members and 11 preparatory members. Average 
attendance at morning worship is 52. Average attendance 
at Sunday School is 37. Pastoral leadership is provided by 
the pastor of the Bowman Charge whose parsonage and 
office is located in Bowman, South Carolina. 
Beginning in January, 1988, special services and 
activities in recognition of the church's 200th anniversary 
as a Methodist Congregation are being planned by a special 
Bicentennial Committee. 
January 17, 1988 Bicentennial Celebration - Bishop 
Roy C. Clark, our Bishop of the United Methodist 
Church for South Carolina gave our morning message. 
October 2, 1988 Homecoming Service - Rev. Roger 
M. Gramling, former member, gave our morning mes-
sage. He is a member of the South Carolina Annual 
Conference. Fred Axson and members of the United 
Methodist Youth Fellowship made a "Brush Arbor" to 
remind us of our beginning. 
1990 - We purchased the new United Methodist 
Hymnals. 
1995 - In memory of the April 19, 1995 bombing of 
the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, 
Oklahoma. we planted a crepe myrtle tree to the right 
of our church sign. 
1998 - The White House United Methodist Women 
participated with the South Carolina American Legion 
Association's Spinoza Bears project. Enough money 
was raised to purchase 42 bears for critically ill children. 
2000 - We enlarged the fellowship hall once more to 
include new restrooms. Several of our men made new 
benches and a book case for the Sunday School rooms. 
2001 - We converted the old restrooms into a church 
office and the beds around the fellowship hall were 
landscaped. "Three Crosses" were added to face US 301. 
2002 - October 26, 2002 we planted 42 Dogwood 
Trees around the perimeter of the cemetery. These 
were given to the church in honor of and memory of 
various members and family. This project was sponsored 
by the Men's Club. The United Methodist Women 
purchased pew Bibles. 
2003 - July 14, 2003 a summer thunderstorm came 
through Orangeburg County and lightning struck our 
sanctuary. Thanks to rapid response from the local 
volunteer fire departments and much prayer, we 
sustained very little damage. We lost several hymn 
books ; everything else was removed from the church. 
Pastor Larry Watson held prayer on the church steps 
when the fire was contained, "Thanking God for the 
safety of all who helped and for sparing us a great loss 
to our building." We held church in the fellowship hall 
until November. Having our services in the fellowship 
hall made us aware that we needed to update our lighting 
and fluorscent lights were added. 
2004 - We poured the sidewalk from the church to 
the fellowship hall. New Cokesbury Hymnals were pur-
chased and additional book racks were added to backs 
of the pews. 
2008 - We purchased a new heating and cooling unit 
for the church and playground equipment for the children.

White House contribute to local ministries by supporting 
Habitat for Humanity, Orangeburg County Relay for Life 
and +RMC Hospice. The first Sunday of each month is 
Hospice Sunday and our members bring canned goods 
and other items to take to the food pantry at Hospice. 
We've supported the Red Cross in national and 
international emergencies: Turkey earthquake victims. 
The 9/11 victims in New York, Washington, DC and 
Pennsylvania. We've supported the South Carolina 
Conference for the victims of Katrina and Zimbabwe 
and missionaries overseas. We provide Operation 
Christmas Child shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse.
