Come home, Terriers! Homecoming 2024
The Wofford College Alumni Association will recognize six Terriers for leadership and service during
Homecoming. The weekend features events for everyone, so register HERE to join the fun.

Terriers prepare to return to campus for the Wofford community’s largest celebration of the
fall, Homecoming, Oct. 24-26. This year’s focus is on alumni, community and excellence. 
During the weekend, the college’s Alumni Association will recognize six graduates for
leadership, service and professional achievement. The Alumni Service Awards will be
presented from 10-11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Pavilion (beside Wightman Hall). 
In addition to the popular history Sip and Stroll (Friday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m.), All-Alumni
Band Party (Friday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m.), and football game and tailgate (Saturday, Oct. 26,
kickoff at 2 p.m.), new events this year include an Alumni Book Signing and Alumni Art
Exhibition (Friday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m.). Reunions will be held for classes ending in ’4 and ’9, as
well as a reunion for Orientation staff alumni (Friday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m.).

Vox Luminis to perform Monday at Wofford
Wofford College will host the internationally acclaimed Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, Monday, Oct.
28. Admission to this concert is free, and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. performance.

Last year Wofford College revived the Benjamin B. Dunlap Chamber Music Series with a
performance from The Tallis Scholars. The series continues this year with Vox Luminis, a
Belgian vocal and instrumental ensemble that focuses on music from the Baroque period.
Vox Luminis will take the stage at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 28, in Main Building’s Leonard
Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
Vox Luminis will perform the program Ein Deutsches Barockrequiem (“A German Baroque
Requiem”), featuring a selection of 17th and 18th century works that use the same biblical
texts Johannes Brahms used in his beloved Requiem. The concert will take the audience
back in time through a traditional Baroque-style performance designed to treat listeners to an
experience much like composers originally intended their scores to be performed and
enjoyed.

A taste of tradition
Dixon Dedman ’03 and Garrett Steck Jr. ’24 raise a glass to dear old Wofford with 1854 Reserve.
Growing up in a Wofford family served as the foundation. A trip to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail
provided the inspiration. A long car ride settled the idea in place.
Now 1854 Reserve bourbon whiskey (Old Main edition) is bottled and ready, and Garrett
Steck Jr. ’24 says he has many in the Wofford community to thank.
“As a Wofford student, I had so much support. So many people were willing to listen to and
aid another Terrier. I feel so fortunate,” says the biology major from Greenville, S.C. Steck is
now studying business management at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He
plans to combine that with his biology degree to pursue a career in biotech. “I reached out to
Calhoun Kennedy ’89 to share the idea, and he immediately connected me with Dixon
Dedman ’03.”
Dedman, a whiskey blender, taster, speaker and consultant, grew up on the Kentucky
Bourbon Trail and ran his family’s James Beard award-winning Beaumont Inn. He resurrected
his family’s Kentucky Owl bourbon after it was destroyed during Prohibition and most recently
established the 2XO bourbon brand. Dedman was intrigued by the project and agreed to
collaborate with Steck to create a bourbon to celebrate Wofford.

“Sky Mall”
Eric Kocher published debut poetry chapbook.
What started as a joke to be the first person to have a poem in “Sky Mall Magazine,” has
turned into the first published book in Eric Kocher’s catalog.
Kocher, assistant professor of environmental studies at Wofford College, has been
incorporating creative writing into his Wofford courses since 2013. His new release, “Sky
Mall,” is a meditation on parenthood and togetherness that explores themes of capitalism,
love and our relationship to the world around us.
“So much of my job is asking students to recognize environmental issues in their own lives,
which is challenging when we are talking about something big like climate change or global
warming,” says Kocher. “Some of the poems in this collection explore how we can train our
attention to see these global issues in our tiny, everyday lives.”

In the wake of Hurricane Helene
Wofford’s grounds crew continues to work to restore the campus.
Everyone remains safe!
Power has been restored.
Water and wind damage to buildings is still being evaluated; most damage seems minimal.
More than 120 trees are down or damaged beyond repair, some over 100 years old.
Wofford College looks different after the eyewall of Hurricane Helene tracked east lashing
Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina with unprecedented wind and rain. Full
recovery will take weeks, but classes have resumed, and administrative offices have
reopened. Fall break is still scheduled for Oct. 17-18, and Thanksgiving and winter holidays
will run as scheduled. The academic calendar remains unchanged.

Quantitative ecology in the jungle
After spending the summer doing research in the Brazilian Pantanal with Dr. Jennifer Bradham, Katie
Garner ’25 and Katie Stewart ’26 will be among the students sharing their research at the Student
Research Presentations and Reception on Saturday, Oct. 12. The event is part of Family Weekend
activities.

Katie Garner ’25 and Katie Stewart ’26 are ready to talk about jungle ecology. Find out what
they discovered during their summer in the Brazilian Pantanal at the Student Research
Presentations and Reception, 9:30-10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, Great Oaks Hall in the
Roger Milliken Science Center.
The event is free and open to the public, with a special invitation to families on campus for
Family Weekend (Oct. 11-12).
Garner, an environmental studies major with a concentration in data science from Rock Hill,
South Carolina, and Stewart, an environmental studies and psychology double major from
Hartsville, South Carolina, conducted research in the world’s largest tropical wetland. They
were given this opportunity and accompanied by Dr. Jennifer Bradham, an assistant
professor of environmental studies and quantitative ecologist.
“The goal of this research is to quantify the impacts of large mammal herbivores on tropical
forest structure and nutrient cycling in intact tropical forests,” says Bradham, who believes the
Pantanal is the ideal place to conduct this type of research because it “consists of a mosaic of
different forest habitats.”

“The Future of American Democracy”

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Claire McCaskill, former Democratic U.S. senator from Missouri and
current MSNBC/NBC political analyst, will speak on the Wofford College campus Monday,
Oct. 21. She will address the topic “The Future of American Democracy” during a moderated
discussion at 6 p.m. in Main Building’s Leonard Auditorium. McCaskill will take questions at
the end of the event.
The event is free, and the public is invited to attend. There is no ticketing or pre-registration
process. Seating is general admission. For questions about accessible seating and entrance
to the building, contact Dr. Dwain Pruitt, vice president for civil rights, compliance and
community initiatives, at pruittdc@wofford.edu.
McCaskill will examine what’s broken in American politics and discuss essential steps for
finding fixes. Known for working across the aisle, McCaskill was the top-ranking Democrat on
the Homeland Security Committee and a senior member of the Armed Services Committee
when she left the Senate in 2018. She was the state auditor of Missouri from 1999-2007.

A knack for numbers

Alexandra Davis ’25 is exploring her passion for accounting this summer through an
internship with Kaitlyn Cockcroft ’15, senior manager at Forvis Mazars in Greenville, South
Carolina.
Davis, an accounting major from Blythewood, South Carolina, is gaining practical experience
for becoming a Certified Public Accountant. She also is playing to her strengths.
“I have always had a knack for numbers,” Davis says. “I fell in love with accounting after
taking Professor Lillian Gonzalez’s Accounting 211 class my second year at Wofford. That’s
when I realized it was something I enjoyed and really wanted to do.”

Wofford grad guides Terriers to legal connections

This summer, two Wofford students have picked up where they left off last summer.
Clayton Hixon ’26, a government major from Jackson, Georgia, and Julio Del Jesus ’25, a
government major from Kissimmee, Florida, are back in the courthouse with the Hon. Timothy
Madden ’85, continuing their legal internship with the 13th Judicial Circuit in Greenville, South
Carolina.
Last summer’s internship enabled Hixon and Del Jesus to learn various components of law
and how they interconnect. This year, they are making connections by visiting courthouses
across the state, learning about different specialties in law, meeting with lawyers and
networking in the legal community.

Bland and Renken connect at Sea Fox Boats in Charleston

A chance connection with a Wofford alumna has led to a dream internship for Marlee Bland
’25, a finance major from Charleston, South Carolina.
Bland is spending her second summer at Sea Fox Boat Company, based in Charleston,
honing her skills under the guidance of Tanner Renken ’19, director of IT and marketing and
fourth-generation leader of the family-owned company.
After contacting Sea Fox about a potential internship last summer, Bland landed the
opportunity and connected with Renken.
“Being born in the Lowcountry and having been surrounded by boats my whole life, I have
always wanted to pursue a career in the boating industry,” Bland says. “Wofford’s emphasis
on networking motivated me to reach out to Sea Fox.”

Todd Eckstein named men’s golf head coach
Todd Eckstein has been named head coach of the men’s golf program. He coached the High
Point University men’s golf team for the past two seasons.
Eckstein says, “The combination of deep tradition, liberal arts education and athletic
excellence at Wofford has the men’s golf program primed to grow into a thriving mid-major

Remembering Dr. Ross Bayard
Dr. Ross Hawthorne Bayard captivated students with dynamic lectures and rigorous
standards for nearly four decades. With wit as sharp as his intellect, he charmed and
challenged generations of Terriers, inspiring a love of history while demanding their very best.
Bayard died July 17, 2024, in Spartanburg.
“Ross was a very popular professor, particularly with upper-class students interested in
studying the classics and Europe,” President Emeritus Joe Lesesne remembers. “He lived
and breathed Wofford.”
Appointed to Wofford’s history department in 1961, initially for a single year, Bayard became
a permanent fixture in 1964. He chaired the department from 1987 to 1991 and retired as a
professor of history emeritus in 2000.

Wofford College Alumni Art Exhibition
The Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts will be the site of the inaugural
Wofford College Alumni Art Exhibition, scheduled for display Sept. 13 through Oct. 27. The
jurors are Jim Hackney ’77 and Blake Batten ’23.
Essence of a Moment closing reception
A closing reception for the Essence of a Moment exhibition by David Eckert begins at
5:30 p.m., July 26 in the Richardson Family Art Gallery in the Rosalind Sallenger
Richardson Center for the Arts. This event is free and open to the public. Eckert is part of
the River Arts community in Asheville, North Carolina. His works capture the complexities of
