Wording on the deed for Sardis United Methodist Church dated December 17, 1815: 
 
The State of South Carolina Union District 
 
Know all men by these presents that we Samuel Johnson and William Clark, Jr. of the District 
and State aforesaid have this day given and granted unto Charles Humphries Sr., William 
Clark, Sr., John Stokes, and Charles Humphries, Jr. all of the same place all that lot of land 
whereon the Methodist Meeting House known by the name of Sardis stands as Trustees of said 
society, beginning at a post oak corner on the road, thence to a black jack on Charles 
Humphries, Sr. land, thence along said line to Mulky’s Branch, thence up said branch to the 
road, thence down said road to the beginning corner, containing two acres and half more or 
less. Together with all and singular the rights members hidetaments and appurtenances 
belonging on or in anywise incident on appertaining, and we do hereby bind ourselves, our 
heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns firmly by these presents to warrant and forever 
to defend all and singulars the before mentioned premises unto the above Trustees for said 
Methodist society, their heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns forever. In witness 
whereof we have here unto set our hands and seals this seventeenth day of December in the 
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen and thirty ninth year of independence 
of the United States of America.
