1984 is a significant year for United Methodi sm in that it 
is our Bicentennial year! It marks the beginning of our Third 
Century of service to God and the world. This year also marks 
the 75th year that our church has been known as Trinity. - ~
The evolution of Methodism as a south Sil l:l!IP(~eligious 
denomination had to wait some fifty years after · the first visits 
of t~e wesleys to the province. In 1784--three years after the 
cessation of_ hostilities of the American Revolution and in the 
year that the Treaty of Peace was concluded in Paris~-sixty 
roving preachers convened in conference in Balti more, Maryland 
and established a church--the formal unifi ca t i on of the Methodist 
movement in the United States. 
In January of 1785, after the conclusion or the ·Baltlmore 
General Conference meeting, the newly or dained Superintendent 
Francis Asbury, in company with the Rev. Woolman Hickson, the 
Rev. Jesse ·Lee, and the Rev. Henry Willis traveled on horseback 
on a missionary journey to the Southern States. They reached 
Georgetown on February 23, 1785, and et ayed there with William 
• 
_ 1 Wayne, whom they converted--the first recorded south Carolina 
Methodist. Hickson stayed in Georgetown to establish a congrega-
tion there, while Asbury, Le~ and Will is continued on to Charleston.

under the leadershi -of Mr. Asa Ro arson and Mr. nt. Mr. 
Rogerson donated one acre of land and the l umber. The two men did 
the carpentry work in the construction of the building. The first 
minister of St. Paul was the Reverend Jones , a Jew converted to 
Methodism.

As early as 1903 south Carolina Methodist cont"erence Records 
that a Sunday School was established at Rosemary and was 
assigned to the Harper's Circuit. Local history tells us that this 
Sunday School. was under the guidance of Mr. Frank Isokre1t, 1n 
whose home the group met. 
In 1905 a community School was built at Rosemary, and all 
denominations began holding their religious meetings at the "Littl.e 
Rod School House". He.vin~ e. place to meet, Mr. Jsokre1t and Mr• 
James L. · Grant organized the Methodist Society e.lorig with the Sunday 
School. The Methodist society, on which a local church is eetabl.ishd, 
is not to be confused with the woman's society whi ch came l.ater• 
There were six original Lay Members of the society. A year later, 
in 1906, there were fifteen members. The Rev. Julius E• Strickland 
traveled once a month from Georgetown to preach t o the group. 
In 1908 the Rosemary Land Association donat ed property at the 
corner of Magnolia Avenue and Ashland Street. The Methodist Church 
was built under the supervision of Mr. Frank J sokreit. Undoubted1y, 
the church was not completed- until 1909. At t h e s outh Carolina 
conference, of that year, the church flas first i dentified as Tr1n1tJ 
Methodist Episcopal church, south. There is no record of a church 
prior to this time. At the same conference Harper's circuit was 
changed to Andrews Circuit ·which included Bethel, Elim, Earles, 
Harmony, rrourdine's Chapel, st. Paul, and Trinity. The Rev. w. T. 
Bedenbaugh was appointed the first minister for the circuit. 
In 1912, during the tenure of the Rev. v, . o. Henderson a par-
sonage was erected on the lot adjacent to the church. The Building 
Board was as follows: G. w. Camlin, R. w. smith, n. w. Avant, Frank 
Isokrelt, J. c. Bailey, B. s. Smith, and w. H. Andrewa. 
U~ until 1912 the Sunday School was for children, only, It was 
organized with approximately fifty-five members. The Rev. W, 0, 
Henderson, in his l'irst Quarterly Report of 1912, stated: "We have 
organized a Wesley Adult Bible Clase in Trinity School, There are 
eighteen members enrolled and the prospects are very encouraging for 
a class of fifty or more," By the next Quarterly Conference, there 
were thirty enrblled. 
The Rev. Henderson was very active. At the Fourth Quarterly 
Conference, which was held in August, 1912, his minutes contained 
the following: "We have organized a Prayer Meeting at Trinity, and 
we are glad to be able to report this and hope thnt the other churches 
will reali~e the need of prayer, for the upliftment of their community, 
and the advancement of God's Kingdom," 
In 1913, negotiations began to unite st. Paul with Trinity. 
At the South Carolina conference held in Sumter on November 25-30, 
1914, St Paul. was discontinued and recommendations made to sell that 
church property for $1,000.00. However, since a Sunday School was 
still in existence at St, Paul as late as 1917, a resolution was adopted 
at the First Quarterly Conference of that year "that it 1'18.B satisfactory 
for the pastor, Rev, 0, T, Teasley, to preach at St. Paul as he deems 
best." It seems that st. Paul's congregation attended church at Trinity 
while still retaining the St. Paul's Sunday School of which Mr, L, A, 
Rogerson was the Superintendent. 
The combination of st. Paul and Trinity along with the growth and 
development of Andrews called for a larger church and in 1916 a committee 
was formed for the purpose of studying the feasibility of constructing 
a new building. The Rev. o. A, Campbell, H. s. Parsons, and D. L,· Moyd 
- served on this connnittee. The Rev. o. A, Teasley repaced the Rev. Jo A

and he continued with the building plane. At the Fourth 
Quarterly conference in 1917 a committee col)'lposed of L., A• Rogerson, 
w. s. Camlin, and Frank Ieokreit was appointed to inquire into the 
wisdom of selling the church property at west Andrews and to report 
to the next session or the Quarterly conference. For s.ome reason

the property was not sold, however, in March of 1918, D. L. Moyd, 
J. L. Grant, John Heineman, Frank Isokreit, and R. w. Bailey were . 
elected to buy and hold as trustees lots for a church and parsonage 
in Andrews. Property was bought at the corner of Farr Avenue and 
Elmwood Street. 
It was not until the Rev. J. R. Johnson was appointed to 
Andrews that the plans became a reality. The church-owned property 
which had been acquired in 1918, was exchanged with the Rosemary 
Land Association for the property on Rosemary Avenue. T. w. Bellune, 
R.H. Gamble, J.B. Grant, Frank Isokreit, H. s. Parsons, and 
c. J. Levy served as the Building committeeo The foundation was 
laid for a $30,000.00, brick structure. The already exifltlilg'~ church 
was sold to the First Pentecostal Holiness on June 8, 1925. Since 
the Holiness desired immediate occupancy, Trinity moved its services 
to a building on East Main. When the church was completed in 1927, 
the membership moved in with much fanfare. In July of 1927, thirteen 
years after the union of st. Paul and Trinity, the west Andrews 
property was finally sold to Mt. Lebanon AME Church for $1,ooo.oo. 
The depression hit Andrews in 1929. The Seaboard Railroad 
Shops were closed--employees dismissed or transferred to other 
locations, The Atlantic Coast Lumber Company was forced out of 
business as there was no market for lumber. Andrews, a once thriving

was at a standstill. Trinity had a debt of $10,000.00. 
There was no hope of building a new parsonage or of retiring the 
church debt at that time. In 1934, the parsonage was moved from 
its old location to a lot next to the church. 
Finally, the last payment was made on the church. Dedication 
Services were held September 23, 1940 with the ·Rev. J.P. Inabinit, 
pastor, in charge. Among the visitors present were Bishop Willi9:M 
T. Watkins of Columbia sho preached the sermon and made the dedicatory 
prayer; the Rev. c. c. Derrick of Kingstree, District Superintendent; 
also the Rev. J. R. Johnson and the Rev. B. G. Murphy, former pastors. 
Economic conditions were quite different in the fifties. Under 
the pastorate of the Rev. w. c. Stackhouse, an educational building 
and parsonage was constructed. Mr. z. M. Mercer, a church member, 
was the contractor for the parsonage. The old parsonage was sold 
and moved two blocks down the street. It is standing today and 
seems to b~ in good condition, after having been moved twice. 
Individually donated stained glass windows and a heating and air con-
ditioning system were installed while the Rev. woodrow <Ward ~ae 
serving our church. 
In 1967 the church sanctuary was remodeled to its current 
striking appearance. Today, Trinity has membership of 421.

CLIO, SOUTH CAROLINA 
The Histor;y of Marlbor o County by J. A. W. Thomas states ·that "About 
1760 Iveys Church (now Clio) was situated near what is now Dunbar." 
The earliest documentation of the House of Worship from which the 
Trinity United Methodist Church has evolved is a deed from Levi Ivey to 
Godi Ivey in 1835. In that deed one and one-fifth acres on which the 
"Meeting House" stood is excluded from the conveyance. Levi Ivey had only 
recently acqui~ed the property. T:r:-aditionally, the early church ha.a been 
called Ivey's Church. 
The old "Meeting House" was situat~d on the road from Clio to Dillon 
and is presently the site of the Old CUo United Hethodist Church. Apparently, 
a church, erected at this site in the 1850's, was burned by the "incendiary's 
torch" in 1866. The present structure was probably built shortly thereafter 
and was utilized by the Trinity co~"Tega.tion un~il 1886 when the congregation 
moved from the Old Clio Methodist Church facility to a new building within the 
town of Clio on Society Street, formerly Darlington Street. 
The building of the new church was begun in 1885 at the site of the 
present church. The old church was sold before the new church was completed, 
and services were held for a while in the :Baptist Church. The old church, now 
about one hundred years old, ia atill in -use. The building, erected in 1885-1886, 
was destroyed .by fire i.n 1902, and a new church, the sixth, was built in 
1902-1903. 
In 1919, under the lead.erehip of Rev. C. C. Derrick, plans were made for 
building a modern church to replace the small wooden building which was erected 
in 1902-1903. The members of the B'~ilding Committee for the new churoh were: 
w. F. Cro_as, W. C. Smith, J. H. Bennett, J. c. Covington, and t. l'I. Bundy. 
There were many delays a.nd work on the new building did not get underwa.T 
until the early spring of 1920. The cornerstone wa.s laid by Bishop u. v. W. 
Darlington on September 20, 1920. 
In 1940, under the leadership of Rev. J. F. M. Hoffmeyer, sufficient 
.funds were raised to pay off the indebtedness, and although the building was 
not completed or furnished, Trinity Methodist Church was dedicated by l3ishop 
W. T. Watkins on September 20, 1940-twenty yEJars to the day after the corner-
stone was laid. Prog:;:-ess on the building was the victim of the cotton cre,sh 
in the 1920's a.nd the subsequent depression. 
Under the leadership of Rev. Georges. Ta.ylor, sufficient funds were 
raised in 1947 to complete the sanotua.%7, to install a heating plant, to paint 
the building, and to make minor repairs. This work was not undertaken, however, 
until the spring of 1948. While this work was in progress, under the enthus-
iastic leadership of Rev. J. Sherwoo_d Davis, a plan was pres·ented to the mem-
bership for raising the necessary funds to purchase the pews and other furni-
ture for the sanctuary. The response of the membership was so generous that 
within sixty days the contract was let for the pews and other furniture. With-
in a few weeks after the contract for furniture was signed, Mr. & Mrs. P. H. 
Lipscomb and Mr. & Mrs. P. G. Wright presented a.· Wurlitzer electronic organ. 
Mr. A. L. Calhoun, Jr., and family presented the chimes; Mr. Lee Chamness 
Sistare presented the brass altar set. Thus, after thirty years, the congrega-
tion of Trinity was able to worship in the completed sanctuary. 
Throughout the years, many furnishings have been given to the church by 
members in memory of loved ones, and a list of these may be found in the 
Memorial Book in the vestibule of the church. 
The years between 1920-48, when the sanctuary of Trinity was finally 
finished and furnished, had been filled with much heartache and disappointment 
for the members of Trinity because of their inability to complete the stately

sanctuary. Upon completion of the work, a .feeling of immense joy and thank-
fulness for ita completion inspired Mr. :J.i':ranlc Koger to write a abort history 
-of the church. He stated, "The entire membership is very deeply indebted to 
all those who have served as pastors here during the past thirty years for 
their .faithful and unselfish service during the tr:,i.ng yeara when our church 
was very heavily 1n debt." 
Mr. Koger concluded his history with the words of Carclinal Newman, "So 
long '1'h1' power hath bleat us, Sure it still will J:.ea.d us on." 
At the time of the dedication of the sanctuary, funds were available to 
add £our new Sunday School rooms and to begin working in the basement, beau-
tifying the recreation-dining room. The congregation moved into its beauti-
ful sanctuary .for the opening service and homecoming on July 11, 1948, with 
about 375 people present. The sanctuary has a sea.ting capacity of 360. At 
this time, a total o.f $166,814.01 had been raised for the building fund. Mr. 
H. D. Harrell was the architect. 
On September 12, 1948, another special program was held .for and by the 
many :former pastors who had given of themselves without reserve, and who had 
inspired the congregation to finish the building and to pay off the indebted-
ness on the church. 
The Clio Circuit was first known as South Marlboro and was a part of the 
Bennettsville Circuit until 1874. The churches composing the Clio Circuit in 
1897 were Clio, Bethlehem, Beulah, and Mannings Chapel. The parsonage was in 
Clio, located in what is now the Joel P. McIntyre. Sr. home on South Main 
Street. In 1882 it was purchased from W. A. Hinshaw by Lewie Spears, James 
T. Covington, and John T. Roper, trustees o.f the parsonage. 
The present parsonage was built in 1905. The construction of the build-
ing was supervised by Rev. F. H. Shuler. From 1972-75 the parsonage was com-
pletely renovated and new furnishings were added at a cost of $11,502. It is 
now a oom£ortable, spacious home with all modem oonvenienoee and is large e-
~ to acooDDOdate an average family. 
Clio Church became a cha.Tge in 188.$-86, when it was moved into a new 
building within the town of Clio. Trinity Church united with the Methodist 
Protestant mrurcb. and the Methodist Episcopal Church 1n . .1939. The name of' 
the church was changed from tho Methodist Episcopal Church South to the Meth-
odist Church. L, 1968 the church we.a united w1 th the Evangelical United Breth-
ren and the ·Jl2lll8 was changed to Trinity United Methodist Church. 
Trinity has alwa.;rs had a. Women's Organization and has carried out the 
program of the Women's Division. 
Since ite beginning, Trinity has maintained aver:, active and meaningful 
Sunday School Department. Under the leadership of man, of its members, the 
Sundq School Department ha.a been an inspiration to young and old a.like. 
Daring the period 1948-1976, under the guidance of Pastors R. P. 'l'llrner, 
E. B. Johnson, T. L. Chapman, Risher Brabham, Robert Morris, and Lewis Sherard, 
the church has continued to grow, to increase in numbers, and in spiritual 
awareness. 
On Sunday, May 31, 1970, the first Bruce Welge Memorial Dey was observed 
at Trinity. On this day an award is presented amiually to a college student 
or high school senior who exemplifies the attributes or patriotism and good 
citizenship. The award is presented in honor of the idea.le, rights, and 
freedoms that Bruce Welge died to preserve. Bruce became a friend of Trinity 
through his classmate at the Citadel-D. G. McIntyre. Be visited frequently 
in the home of D. G. 's parents, Mr. & Mrs. D. B. McIntyre. Bruce died in ac-
tion in 1969 in Vietne.m. His parents, the Welges of Cheater, Illinois, made 
the awe.rd possible by presenting a memorial fund to the church. The interest 
from this growing fund is given each year to the young person who is chosen 
for this honor. This special day has become ver:, mee.ningful in +.he life of 
Trinity. A speaker of somg note is chosen, a special musical program is 
presented, and after the award is given, the families of the church gather 
tor a picnio on the grounds. 
Reoipienta or the award are: 1970, Betty McCaakill Alford; 1971, 
Robert Norton; 1972, Sarah L. Dowling Norton; 1973, Thomas Woodle, Jr.; 
1974, David Greene; 197S, I,e,n Meadors; 1976, Melinda McIntyre. 
Among the speakers have been: Congressman Ed Yo11128, Hon. W. J. B. 
Dorn, and Dr. Wrieht Spee.rs. Marion Wright, Jr. has been chairman of this 
dq since its beg:lmdng. 
In 1964 Mr. Lee c. Sietare gained the consent of Christ Episcopal Church 
in Wilmington, Delaware, to give to Trinity their old pipe organ, valued at 
$3$,000, provided Trinity~ for the work that was being done on it (Sl,260). 
This gift was made possible by the Dupont .family's having given Christ church 
a new organ. With the help of members and friends, Trinity' was able to raise 
the necesBaZ7 funds to dismantle the organ, pa.ck 1.t, ship it to Clio, and have 
it installed for approximately $12,000. 
The orsan was pl.qed for the first time at Trinity on Sunday mo1'!11Dg, 
September 26, 196S, with Mr. Sista.re as gaeat organist. 
The Choir of Trinity has always been outstanding. From the earliest 
church, music has bean a vital part of the worship service. Throughout the 
yea:rs, Mrs. Elizabeth Covington McIntyre has been a faithful leader and an 
inspiration to the choir. She has given tirelessly and unselfishly of her 
time and talents to music education in the public schools as well as in the 
church. One of her pupils, Marion Wright, Jr., has s0rved as director for 
the past 14 years. Under his direction the choir, with organist, Mrs. Mil-
dred MoQuase, and pianist, Mrs. Annette Floyd, has presented many outstanding 
musical programs. On May 30, 1976, the choir gave "I Love America" an out-
standing Bicentennial Program. They presented this program in several ohurohes 
in the area, thus sharing the spirit of the Bicentennial year. 
Trinity has carried out the programs prescribed by the Methodist Confer-
ence and has participated in county and community efforts as well. A ver:, active 
MYF was instrumental in preventing the opening of e. liquor store in the early 
19.$01s. 
Attached hereto is a list of all the ministers who have served this 
church. Also attached is a list of the amounts raieed s.nd ot contributions 
made to the building fund through the yee:r 1948.
