March Mammal Madness 
 
second and third rounds, Professor 
Kocher and Dr. Bradham were pulling 
ahead, but the fourth round proved to be 
a hard one and Mrs. Overcarsh, Mrs. 
Brewitt and Dr. Brewitt held the lead. 
And though Dr. Savage’s points 
standings were low from the beginning, 
she managed to have her champion, the 
squid, go on to compete for the 
championship against the great white 
shark (picked by Mrs. Brewitt). It would 
have been the comeback of the 
tournament for Dr. Savage if the squid 
had won, but alas the great white shark 
proved to be the winner. And Mrs. 
Overcarsh and Mrs. Brewitt ended up 
with the most points overall. 
Now that Dr. Bradham has introduced 
this friendly competition, we look 
forward to competing again next year 
and the group must buy lunch for the 
points winner! ;)  
 
 
 
This year Dr. Bradham rallied the 
Environmental Studies department to 
compete against each other in the 
March Mammal Madness Tournament. 
Much like the other popular March 
Madness Basketball Tournament, the 
idea is to fill out your brackets, but 
decide which animal (some plants too) 
will be the champion instead of a 
basketball team. This tournament 
began in 2013 and was created by a 
group of scientists at Arizona State 
University. They research and pair up 
the competing animals, then write up 
the battle scenarios to ultimately give us 
a winner for each match up. 
Dr. Bradham, Professor Kocher, and 
our administrative assistant, Mrs. 
Overcarsh, started the tournament with 
the most points followed closely by Dr. 
Brewitt (and Mrs. Brewitt), Dr. 
Helman, and Dr. Savage. After the 
Senior Seminar visited Little River Roasting at The Fretwell to learn about their 
sustainability and climate engagement practices.

New director of athletics
Scott Kull brings 31 years of experience to his new role as Wofford College’s director of athletics.
Wofford College President Nayef Samhat has announced that Scott Kull will be the college’s
next director of athletics, effective April 1, 2024.
Kull is currently the deputy athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the
athletics foundation at University of North Carolina Charlotte. He has held similar positions at
the University of Utah, University of South Florida, Florida State and Texas Christian
University. His career has also taken him to the University of Florida and Georgia Tech.
A proven fundraiser, Kull has 31 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, including
work in strategic planning, student-athlete wellbeing, athletics marketing and media relations,
departmental leadership, financial affairs, compliance and risk management, corporate
sponsorship, licensing, ticket sales, emerging technologies and facilities and event
management. In 2019, he was recognized by the Sports Business Journal as a “power
player.”

Keisler Family Building dedicated
A ribbon-cutting was part of the ceremony during the Keisler Family Building in the John E. Reeves Tennis
Center dedication.
The Keisler Family Building in the John E. Reeves Tennis Center was dedicated on Feb. 23.
The complete renovation and expansion of the building was made possible by a gift from
Mary and Wade Keisler ’80.
Wade Keisler is a respected business and philanthropic leader in the Midlands area of South
Carolina. He served as a licensed real estate broker and developer for 30 years. A longtime
supporter of Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia and a member of Saint Stephens
Lutheran Church in Lexington, Keisler is a member of the Greater Columbia Association of
Homebuilders and the National Association of Homebuilders. He has served on the college’s
Board of Trustees since 2019 and is a lifetime member of the Terrier Club Board of Directors.
He previously served on the FOR WOFFORD Campaign Steering Committee and the
college’s Investment Advisory Committee.
Dr. Mary Woods Keisler is a veterinarian who has practiced at Cherokee Trail Veterinary
Hospital since 1996. She is a lifetime member of the Terrier Club Board of Directors. She is a
past member of the Board of Veterinary Medicine for the District of Columbia, past president
of the South Carolina Association of Veterinarians, past president of the Greater Columbia
Association of Veterinarians and former chair of the SC Vets Care nonprofit foundation. She
is director of the Woods Family Investment Group and a volunteer for Saint Stephens
Lutheran Church. Mary and Wade have two daughters, Lauren Keisler Schultz ’10 and
Caroline Keisler.
Czech mates
Five Wofford graduates celebrated the 10th anniversary of their Interim trip by reuniting in Prague, Czech
Republic, in January. Left to right are Natasha Rudy ’14, Will Thomas ’14, Peter Blosser 14, Conner Maloy
’14 and Will Ledford ’15.
In January, five Wofford alumni decided to reunite in Prague, Czech Republic, to
commemorate the 10th anniversary of their Interim trip in 2014.
Four spreadsheets, a detailed map and an itinerary later, Natasha Rudy ’14, Peter Blosser
’14, Will Thomas ’14, Will Ledford ’15 and Conner Maloy ’14 set out to rediscover the charm
of the historic city’s cobblestone streets and Gothic spires.
“Even though we were only there for two weeks the first time, all of us could navigate the city
like we had never left,” shares Rudy, a genetic counselor in Greenville, South Carolina. “I
think that speaks to the testament of what that initial Interim trip was. We really did get a good
appreciation for the city that we were visiting. Not only the layout of it, but of all the history
that happened there.”

March events
The Benjamin B. Dunlap Chamber Music Series will bring Ronn McFarlane on lute and Carolyn Surrick on
viola da gamba to campus for a performance at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 21 in Leonard Auditorium.
Multiple events will take place on campus in March as Wofford observes Women’s History
Month. March features attention-grabbing talks, gallery exhibitions and the Southern
Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in Asheville, North Carolina.
Gallery exhibitions that opened in February will continue through March, with “Progressions:
The Evolution of Style and Subject in the Work of Julia Elizabeth Tolbert” and “Artists
Collecting Artists” both spotlighting the work of women.

Mock trial
Wofford alumni in the legal profession gave their time on Feb. 24-25 as the college hosted the American
Mock Trial Association Regional Tournament for the second consecutive year.
Wofford alums convened in Spartanburg on Feb. 24-25 and gave their time to support the
American Mock Trial Association Regional Tournament hosted by the college. Wofford was
hosting for the second straight year. Last year, the college held the tournament on campus,
but this year it took advantage of the newly-opened Spartanburg County Courthouse to host
the competition. Eighteen teams, with teams from Duke University, East Tennessee State,
Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State University and the University of South Carolina advancing to
the national tournament.
Remembering Lucy Quinn
Lucy Quinn worked at Wofford for 55 years, including 21 as registrar. She died Feb. 17.
Lucy Quinn ’83, registrar emerita, came to Wofford in 1963 as the secretary to then-registrar
Bates L. Scoggins ’30. When he retired, she assisted Ned Sydnor. All the while she took
courses, usually one per term, and in 1983 she had earned enough credits to receive her
bachelor’s degree in English, magna cum laude.
She died Feb. 17 at her home in Spartanburg.
During her 24 years as the secretary to the registrar, she learned how the office worked, and
when Sydnor retired in 1987, she was the obvious choice to fill the position. She later earned
her master’s degree in higher education from the University of South Carolina and led the
registrar’s office until 2008.

Tianna Kidd ’25 named Wofford’s 2024-25 Presidential
International Scholar
Kidd hopes to explore fashion as identity in Cameroon, Ghana and Morocco
Tiana Kidd ’25, a biology and physics double major from Greenwood, South Carolina, has
been selected as Wofford’s 2024-25 Presidential International Scholar.
Kidd, the 40th recipient of the scholarship, hopes to journey to Cameroon, Ghana and
Morocco, where she will conduct research for her project “Beyond Aesthetics: Exploring
Fashion as Identity.”
“I think it’s important to meet people with different opinions, backgrounds and religions,” Kidd
says. “I hope to meet individuals who are different from me, ask them questions, get to know
them and hear about their life stories.”

Kappa Sigma’s Alpha-Nu Chapter launches Craig D. Melvin
scholarship
Craig D. Melvin ’01 was recently named Kappa Sigma’s 2023 Man of the Year.
The Alpha-Nu Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity unveiled the Craig D. Melvin Scholarship-
Leadership Award at its 2024 Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving. The chapter
amassed $51,311.80 to fund the scholarship.
Spearheaded by the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund, this initiative is one of 17 scholarship-
leadership awards instituted nationwide that celebrate distinguished fraternity members. This
scholarship pays tribute to Craig Melvin ’01, a current member of Wofford’s Board of Trustees
and NBC Today show host, for recently being named Kappa Sigma’s 2023 Man of the Year.
“I am so honored to be chosen as Kappa Sigma’s Man of the Year,” Melvin says in a
statement. “I have such fond memories from my days at the Alpha-Nu Chapter at Wofford
College and am so proud to continue the Kappa Sigma legacy of excellence.”

Wofford grad sponsors Terrier Care Line for one year
Steven Martin ’93
Steven Martin ’93 will gift $15,000 to the Terrier Care Line, a crisis counseling service for
Wofford’s community.
Martin, president and CEO of Constellation Quality Health based in Charlotte, North Carolina,
says his contribution will fund the care line’s operation for one year.
“This just seemed like a logical fit,” says Martin, who earned a bachelor’s in biology from
Wofford and a master’s in health administration from the Medical University of South
Carolina. “Wofford means so much to me, and I am humbled to be part of this.”

Secure your spot at the inaugural South Carolina Innocence
& Justice Conference
Explore justice reform at South Carolina’s first Innocence & Justice Conference, hosted by the South
Carolina Innocence Initiative at Wofford College on May 3, 2024.
The South Carolina Innocence Initiative will host the regional Innocence & Justice
Conference at Wofford on May 3 from 8:15 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. The conference brings
together leaders in the legal arena to examine the causes, challenges and remedies
associated with wrongful conviction and to offer discussion regarding a path forward for the
state. Craig Melvin ’01, Wofford trustee and NBC Today show host will interview Fernando
Bermudez, who spent 19 years in prison before exoneration. Other presenters include
keynote speaker Chris Fabricant, director of strategic litigation with the Innocence Project and
a national expert on junk forensic science.
The event has been approved for 7.00 CLE credits through the South Carolina Commission
on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization.
Early bird registration ends March 31.
