Each year the college celebrates the start of the holiday season with the traditional

Visit the new Wofford College U.S. Military Memorial
On a gorgeous fall day, the Wofford College community dedicated a new military memorial on campus.
The event was led by the Southern Guards ROTC Battalion, and Col. Herb Franklin ’88, U.S. Army
chaplain, offered the invocation.
Established in 2024 to honor those who died during active military service, the Wofford
College U.S. Military Memorial is the work of many, and Wofford alumni and staff military
veterans led the way, sharing their ideas for a memorial and inspiring action. In addition to
honoring those who died during active military service, the memorial has markers
recognizing:
Wofford’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, organized Oct. 18, 1919.
All veterans.
The peacemakers.
The college dedicated the memorial, which is located between Main Building and DuPré
House, on Nov. 16 before the Military Appreciation football game. The special service
featured the Woodwind Quintet and Bugler from the 282nd Army Band from Fort Jackson; a
Southern Guards formation, drill ceremony and presentation of the colors; an invocation by
Col. Herb Franklin ’88; the singing of the national anthem by Maj. Jessica Georgi; remarks
from President Nayef Samhat and Lt. Col. Nicole Dallocchio; and an inspirational address of
remembrance by Lt. Gen. Scott Dingle, retired U.S. Army Surgeon General. The college bell
tolled for each alumnus memorialized, and students from the Dorman High School Cavalier
Battalion read the names of the fallen.
The college also has developed a webpage with photos and more information about each

President’s Office and the Office of Civil Rights, Compliance and Community Initiatives.
Wofford College has been recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge as a
2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting, which honors colleges and
universities for outstanding efforts to increase nonpartisan student voter participation. 
The college has supported student participation in the democratic process through the
Wofford Votes initiative, which was created in 2016 to improve troubling national voter
participation trends, specifically on college campuses. Wofford Votes is coordinated by staff
in the Division of Campus Life and Student Development and led by an interactional steering
committee of leaders from various departments across campus.

The History of Pine Grove United Methodist Church
Pine Grove United Methodist Church, located in the eastern part of Marlboro County, South
Carolina, is about two miles from the North Carolina line, and about three miles from McColl, South
Carolina. The lovely rural church is located in one of the best farming communities in the state. Across
the road is the former Fletcher Memorial School, now in ruins. Close by is a beautiful body of water
known as McNair’s Pond. Most of the church members live within a few miles of the church.
It is safe to say that Pine Grove has been a place of worship for more than 200 years. Piney
Grove Meeting House was built by the Quakers on a grant of one hundred acres of land given to
Jonathan Marine by Thomas Pinckney, Governor of South Carolina.
The deed to Piney Grove Meeting House was given to Jonathan Marine and John Mendenhall,
two overseers of the Quaker Meeting House. The tract of land contained four acres, price paid, four
dollars. This lot or tact of four acres being a part of a tract conveyed to Jonathan Marine by His
Excellency, Thomas Pinckney, Governor, dated November 9, 1787.
A deed dated day of March 1802, witnessed by Thomas Morris and Francis Thomas, is
recorded in the office of Marlboro County Clerk of Court in Book P, page 111.
Deed to Pine Grove Church property was signed by J. Mendenhall on 25th day of March, 1833,
witnessed by Alex McLeod and William L. Adams and H. Mendenhall of Guilford County, North
Carolina, overseer of Piney Grove Meeting House, acting under the authority and jurisdiction of the
Quaker church or meeting for the state of North Carolina, deeded to Joshua Fletcher, Charles Manship,
William Bundy, Lewis Parker, Cornelius Newton, Thomas Lester, and Willoughby Pate, Trustees for
Piney Grove Methodist Episcopal Church. Tract of land contained four acres— price paid, thirty dollars,
including land and meeting house. Recorded in Clerk of Court’s office, Book P, page 145.
This meeting house was first used by a fine colony of Friends (Quakers), who lived here before
the Revolutionary War. Other denominations, Methodist and Baptists, were allowed to worship in this
same structure. After the Revolutionary War ended, the Quakers sold their lands and left in a body for
what was then called the “Northwest Territory.” Before they left, Jonathan Marine and John
Mendenhall, two of the Quakers, paid four dollars to legalize the passing of four acres of land to the
successors of the Pine Grove Meeting House.
For some time after the Quakers left, the building was used by both Baptists and Methodists. In
1837, the Baptists moved to Beaverdam near McColl, and left this community to the Methodists. Our
list of ministers was kept by Joshua Fletcher who came to Marlboro County in 1815.
The same building the Quakers had built was used until 1857, when a new building was erected.
This building was a large white frame rectangular building with many large windows. It consisted of a
sanctuary with two rows of columns down the aisles supporting the roof. This church was known for
its “Amen” corner.
About 1909, W.B. and J. A. Fletcher bought the church building and moved it to their farm. A
more modern building was erected on the same site. This, too, was a wooden structure, consisting of
a sanctuary and five classrooms. This beautiful church featured three large stained glass memorial
windows as well as several smaller stained glass windows, which gave a lovely glow to the interior.
The pulpit furniture and pews were in walnut, and the floors were carpeted in green. The sanctuary
and ladies’ classroom were connected by folding doors.
The Reverend B.G. Murphy was pastor when this church was built. It was dedicated by Bishop
John C. Kilgo, who began his ministry on the Benneffsville Circuit. Later, a two story parsonage was
added in the 1920s.
The building ably filled the needs of the congregation until the third Sunday of January, 1942,
when it was destroyed by fire. To show the cooperative spirit of this community, only a short time
elapsed before a new building was in the process of being built. The architect of this new building was
H. D. Harrall of Bennettsville, S.C.
Members of the Building Committee: Marvin W. Adams, Chairman; Jesse Adams, Sr., Treasurer;
Frank Adams, Secretary; Rev. E.B. Johnson, Pastor (Rev. Johnson did the wiring of the church).
It was noted that all of the workmen who built the building had Biblical names: David Reese,
builder; Daniel Jarvis, Assistant Builder; Enoch Hines, Plasterer; Nathaniel Malachi, tile floor installer.
The current Pine Grove United Methodist Church is of Gothic design and is a smaller model of
Duke Chapel. The design of the church matched that of the school and the other buildings in the area,
the school teacherage and the parsonage. The church is a brick veneer building consisting of a
sanctuary, five classrooms, and a balcony. It was one of the first churches in the county with a divided
chancel.
Trees were cut from the farms of the Fletchers, Betheas, McGregors, Mangrums, Adamses,
Notions, and Stantons to make the beautiful beams in the ceiling of the church. It is not surprising that,
upon its completion in 1944, it was completely paid for at the time of its dedication by Bishop Claire
Purcell on September 4, 1944.
All the stained glass windows in the sanctuary are memorial windows, with the names of former
members and ancestors of the present members. Along the right side are windows in memory of Mr.
and Mrs. Ben Frank Moore, Mr. and Mrs. John K. Fletcher, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnson Adams, and
Mr. and Mrs. Welcome Adams Moore. Along the left side, the windows are in memory of Mr. and Mrs.
Joel Nelson Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Raeford Fletcher, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Fletcher, and Mr. and Mrs.
Archie Patterson Norton.
The balcony is named the Adams Memorial Balcony, with its windows in memory of Jonathan
Adams and his descendants. The windows above the choir loft are dedicated to the memory of John
S. Fletcher and members of his family.
The altar cross is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Doushka Pass Adams by her family. The
pulpit Bible was given in honor of Mattie Frank Carraway by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Adams.
Every piece of furniture was given as a memorial. Red carpet covers the floor of the chancel
and church aisles. In 2008, the church acquired a new Allen Organ due to a generous gift from Dr.
C.W. Love. The baby grand piano was a gift from the estate of Mrs. Ellen Fletcher.
A new, handicapped accessible bathroom was added in 2008, and dedicated to the memory of
Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Carraway. Mrs. Carraway originated the “bathroom fund” which led to the present
memorial fund.
The church parsonage was built in the 1920s, about the same time as Fletcher Memorial School.
Prior to the construction of this two story, brick veneer building, Pine Grove’s ministers lived in a house
rented from the Breedens. The house still exists, standing on the former Ed Pence farm, and known
as “Elizabeth’s Playhouse”.
The parsonage was used by minister’s families until 1970, when the family of Rev. Zach Farmer
moved out. From that time till the present, the building has been called the Robert Fletcher Community
Building. It is used for community gatherings of all types. It is presently in the process of extensive
repairs and renovation. A new roof was added in 2008, as well as a new water pump and water lines,
financed by funds from the church memorial fund. In 2009, a generous gift from anonymous donors
funded painting of the Community Building. This gift was in memory of Mrs. Isabel Adams.
The current plans for the community building is replacement of the 36 original windows. Six
windows are in critical need of repair.
Many distinguished pastors and laypeople have spoken from the pulpit of this church. On
September 16, 1973, during the pastorate of Rev. Marion Caidwell, Pine Grove was honored to have
Bishop Edward L. Tullis preach at the morning worship service. Many visitors were present for this
special service.
The ladies of the church make up the Louise-Sue Fletcher chapter of the United Methodist
Women. This group is active in church work of all kinds. The UMW sponsored, in conjunction with the
UMW of Main Street UMC in McCoIl, a women’s retreat, “Heart to Heart— a woman’s Search for God,”
led by Rev. Janet Buffaloe of Cordova, N.C., on April 25, 2009. Approximately 40 women participated
in this retreat, which will become an annual event.
The grounds of the church and community building have always been a community project. The
shrubbery was donated by members. Longleaf pines and magnolias were planted by members of the
Saturday Afternoon Book Club as living memorials to deceased church members.
The current congregation of Pine Grove is small, but faithful in attendance and giving.
