Interim in Nicaragua

endure the toxic sulfuric smoke emitted 
from the volcano, as well as the radiated 
heat. The more I learned about the 
birds, the greater my desire to see them 
became. Luckily, I didn’t have to wait 
long. As the sun set, a flock of these 
parrots began flying towards the entry of 
the volcano from a distant field. I 
watched in awe, completely oblivious to 
the flowing magma and solely focused 
on these strange little birds. I kept 
thinking to myself: Do they know how 
cool they are? Or how much they 
represent the greatness that is adaptation 
and evolution? And on the ride back to 
Costa Dulce, as the group jammed out 
to 2000s hits, I felt fulfilled and beyond 
grateful—not only as a student—but as 
a human being, that I get to share this 
planet with so many spectacular 
organisms. 
For interim 2024, I had the privilege of 
travelling to Costa Dulce, San Juan Del 
Sur in Nicaragua. While at the 
beautiful resort, which is nestled within 
a coastal tropical rainforest ecosystem, I 
was able to bring lessons from the 
textbook pages to life. One of the most 
memorable experiences was getting to 
visit two active volcano sites, and 
actually seeing flowing magma. In my 
earth systems class, I learned about the 
intricate and long process that the 
formation of a volcano entails. Being a 
visual learner, I found it difficult at 
times to wrap my mind around those 
in-class lectures, as these formations are 
hard to come by in the states. While at 
the volcano, I also got to learn about a 
specific breed of parrot that lives within 
the craters along the sides of active 
volcanoes. These birds have adapted to 
Volcanic landscapes were part of the 
adventures in Nicaragua during 
Interim with Dr. Jen Bradham and 
Dr. Katherine Valde.

University of Utah – Environmental Humanities  
The environmental humanities program at The 
University of Utah is a 2-year post baccalaureate 
degree concentrating on the humanities perspective and 
how it intersects with and influences public policy, 
scientific, legal, industrial, and corporate concerns.   
The university offers a unique opportunity to use this 
western landscape for field study and research at their 
Taft-Nicholson Center in Salt Lake City.  Their 
mission is to bridge the arts and humanities with the 
sciences while promoting environmental awareness 
and personal connections in nature. 
Both MA and MS degrees are available. The MA 
requires an approved language component, and the 
MS requires three research methods courses. 
The three options for completing this degree include 
a thesis, project, or non-thesis with varying 
requirements for course work hours.

Atkins endows director of athletics position
Wofford College’s Director of Athletics Scott Kull, left, and Robby Atkins ’65.
In a history-making gesture of generosity, Robby Atkins ’65 has endowed the director of
athletics position at Wofford College. The $3 million investment creates the first endowed
fund to support a coaching or staff position at the college.
This places Wofford among the 12% of Division I Football Bowl Subdivision institutions to
have an endowed director of athletics position. Scott Kull, Wofford’s new director of athletics,
is first to hold the Robert D. Atkins ’65 Director of Athletics position.
“What a gift! To step onto campus for my first official day of work as director of athletics and
be able to thank Robby Atkins for this remarkable contribution is the stuff of legend,” says
Kull. “I’ll work every day to live up to the honor and responsibility of this new endowed
position.”

Tomkins’ TED-Ed lesson illuminates ancient Egypt
Dr. Jessica Tomkins, assistant professor of history, created a TED-Ed video exploring the legacy of
Pharaoh Ramesses II.
Dr. Jessica Tomkins’ TED-Ed video has captivated more than 370,000 viewers (and
counting) on YouTube.
In the video, Tomkins, assistant professor of history, explores whether the controversial
Pharaoh Ramesses II was a model leader or a master of propaganda in a courtroom drama.
“I’ve always used these short little videos in my classes,” says Tomkins, an Egyptologist who
specializes in the Old Kingdom, also known as the Pyramid Age. “Compared with other online
sources, TED-Ed tends to produce videos with correct information. So, one day I came
across an email address on their website for somebody to get in touch with if you have ideas
and decided to submit my own idea.”

Wofford to host former U.S. Ambassador to China Terry
Branstad on April 22
Terry Branstad, the former U.S. ambassador to China, will speak during a fireside chat with
Van Hipp, chairman of American Defense International and founder of the Hipp Lecture
Series on International Affairs and National Security, at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 22, in
Leonard Auditorium.
Branstad is the longest-serving governor in American history, chairman of the American Free
Enterprise Chamber of Commerce and president of the World Food Prize Foundation. He will
share insights on international affairs and national security. This event is part of the Hipp
Lecture Series on International Affairs and National Security. It is free and open to the public.
Attendees are invited to a reception immediately following Branstad’s chat.

Students spark Wofford Women’s Health Coalition

Three Wofford College students are leading women’s health outreach on campus and in the
surrounding community.
Madelyn Wilson ’25, Gabby Gecan ’25 and Mary Charles Burke ’25 have founded the
Wofford Women’s Health Coalition with the aim of combining education and awareness on
women’s health topics with monthly service opportunities in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
“We needed a space where we can talk about women’s health, benefit the community and
promote education,” says Wilson, a psychology and Spanish major from Apex, North
Carolina, who is serving as the coalition’s co-president.

Shared Worlds establishes endowed fund to support
financial aid for campers
The next installment of Shared Worlds, a science fiction/fantasy teen writing summer camp, will be held at
Wofford July 14-27.
A new endowed fund aims to provide aspiring teen writers with monetary support that will
enable them to hone their skills at Wofford College.
In December, Shared Worlds, a science fiction/fantasy teen writing summer camp, gave
$75,000 to establish the endowed fund. Proceeds from the fund will be used to provide
financial aid to campers annually beginning in 2025. The cost of the camp is currently about
$2,600 per participant.
“Our goal is to ensure that everyone who wants to participate in Shared Worlds, can,” says
Dr. Joseph Spivey, associate professor of mathematics and the camp’s director. “This fund
also gives Shared Worlds alumnae and other friends a way to pay it forward.”

Not your average classroom
Wofford students are inspired by the resilience of the tooth-billed bowerbird while studying abroad in
Australia.

A professor in Australia challenged Wofford students Lilly Bridges ’26, Archer Meares ’26 and
Strom Thurmond ’26 to write and publish an article on the conservation of a specific bird
species. Getting the article published turned out to be the easy part. (Read their fascinating
article “Through Vines and Rain: The Resilient Dance of the Tooth-Billed Bowerbird” at the
link below.)
The real challenge was the rain-drenched search for the declining species and the sense of
responsibility the trio of Wofford students now carry to help tell the story of the threatened but
resilient bird.
“I’d like people to read the article, but the bottom line is that we’re all a part of the same world,
and we fly or fail together,” says Thurmond, a native of Aiken, S.C.
The three biology majors spent the fall semester in Cairns, Australia, studying the ecological
patterns and human influences affecting the wet tropics bioregion and the Great Barrier Reef.
They have learned how to read the landscape and conduct marine, terrestrial and
anthropological fieldwork in a cross-cultural context. Their classroom has been constantly
changing, from campsites and forests to the submerged coral cays of the Pacific Ocean.

Wofford Theatre to perform “The Amateurs”
An intrepid troupe of actors attempts to outrun the Black Death in Noah’s ark. The play opens TONIGHT
(Thursday, Nov. 7).

Wofford Theatre will showcase its fall production, “The Amateurs” by Jordan Harrison, at 7
p.m., Nov. 7-9 and Nov. 13-16. The show is directed by Abigail Dillard, assistant professor of
theatre.
“The Amateurs” tells the story of a courageous group of pageant players as they race across
medieval Europe to flee the Black Death. They prepare a retelling of Noah's flood in the
structure of a play within a play for the Duke of Travo in an attempt to seek shelter from the
plague. The performance showcases themes such as survival, faith, art and self-fulfillment,
which will resonate across a broad audience. 
As the play advances, the plague that the characters are fleeing begins to resemble a more
recent plague from the ‘80s, which Dillard says “will cause today’s audiences to draw
personal connections to the crises of our own century.” The recurring theme within the show
is the “art of survival,” which is seen as the characters rely on their creative outlets to survive
the plague.

Wofford to dedicate new military memorial
At 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, the college community will gather to dedicate a new Wofford College United
States Military Memorial on campus. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.
A few years ago, Wofford graduates and staff military veterans began an effort to establish a
memorial on campus to honor Wofford alumni who died while serving on active military duty.
The memorial — which also recognizes the establishment of ROTC on campus and the
contributions of all veterans and peacekeepers — is now complete, and the community is
invited to a dedication ceremony. The event will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at
the site of the memorial between Main Building and DuPré House. Parking is available
on the horseshoe of Main Building, accessed from Evins Street.
Lt. Gen. Scott Dingle, retired Army surgeon general, is the keynote speaker. The ceremony
will include music from the Woodwind Quintet and Bugler, 282nd Army Band, Fort Jackson;
the tolling of the college bell and the reading of the names of the fallen; an invocation by U.S.
Army Chaplain Col. Herb Franklin ’88; a formation and drill ceremony and presentation of
colors. Maj. Jessica Georgi, executive officer with the Department of Defense Health
Agency’s Veterans Affairs Support Office, will sing the national anthem. Lt. Col. Nicole
Dallocchio, professor of military science, and President Nayef Samhat also will take part in
the dedication ceremony.

Dr. Jameica Hill named 2024 NCAA Division I Faculty
Athletics Representative of the Year
Dr. Jameica Hill ’88 has been named the 2024 NCAA Division I Faculty Athletics
Representative of the Year by FARA, the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association. Each
year the association nationally honors one member in each of the three divisions for this
recognition.
Hill, associate provost for administration and professor of chemistry, is in her 19th year as the
faculty athletics representative at Wofford. She is responsible for certifying the eligibility of
student-athletes and assuring integrity in the eligibility process. In addition to supervising
athletics policies, she serves as a liaison between the faculty and the student-athletes,
looking out for their individual well-being regarding academics and athletics. She served as
the President of the Southern Conference from 2017 to 2019 and is currently chair of the
NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.

Family Weekend

Terriers and their people will reunite Oct. 11-13 at Family Weekend, an event-filled annual
celebration where laughter and a sense of community rule the day — and night.
“Family Weekend is a great opportunity for families to see why Wofford is their students’
home away from home. It’s also important for families to see the impact Wofford is having on
their students and the collective impact students have on the college,” says Thom Henson
’96, director of family philanthropy and engagement. “My favorite comment to hear from a
visiting family member is how they wish they had attended Wofford. That means we’re doing
something right.”
There will be fun and exciting events each day of Family Weekend. Those events include
receptions, art exhibits, athletics contests, research presentations, lots of live music and a
family trivia night.

Dunlap Chamber Music Series: Vox Luminis, Oct. 28
Founded in 2005 in honor of Wofford College’s President Emeritus Bernie Dunlap, the Dunlap
Chamber Music Series has an impressive lineup for the 2024-25 academic year. All events
are free and open to the public. Performances are at 7 p.m. in Leonard Auditorium, Main
Building.
Vox Luminis will be on campus Monday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m., Leonard Auditorium. The public is welcome!
Vox Luminis, a Belgian early music vocal ensemble, was founded in 2004 by Lionel Meunier.
The group performs over 60 concerts annually, showcasing its distinctive sound that
highlights each voice’s timbre while creating a unified sound color. With a core of soloists
mostly from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Vox Luminis specializes in Italian, English
and German repertoire from the 16th to 18th centuries. Their 19 albums have received
international acclaim and numerous awards, including Gramophone Recording of the Year
and BBC Music Choral Award.

The Hon. J. Michelle Childs, a judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of
Columbia, delivered this year’s Linton R. Dunson Constitution Day Lecture, “The Constitution
and the Rule of Law: Linchpins to the Preservation of Democracy,” followed by a panel
discussion featuring:
The Hon. Jacquelyn D. Austin, judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of South
Carolina.
The Hon. D. Garrison Hill ’86, associate justice of the Supreme Court of South
Carolina.

NATIONAL SPEAKER: Michael Steele on campus Sept. 23
Claire McCaskill and Michael Steele are two of the national speakers coming to campus this semester to
discuss the democratic process.
Part of the “Defining or Dividing?: Contemporary Issues in American Culture” series, former
Republican National Committee Chairman and current MSNBC host Michael Steele will
discuss “How to Win Elections and Lose the Country.” Steele will delve into the madness and
the methods of our political parties and the systems they create in the fight for domination
and electoral success; and ultimately, how the emergence of Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders
and future presidential contenders may signal not just a profound transformation of both
political parties, but their eventual end.
The event will not be livestreamed or recorded. There are no tickets, and seating is general

Wofford students study icy origins of life on Earth

When Ellis Parsons ’26 pursued research opportunities this summer, he opted for an
experience that would take him out of his comfort zone.
Parsons, an international affairs and history double major from Landrum, South Carolina,
chose to work with Dr. Daniel Helman, visiting assistant professor of environmental studies,
on a study that could illuminate the beginnings of life on earth.
“It’s outside of my field a little, but I think that is what attracted me to it,” Parsons says. “I was
interested in gaining experience in research and challenging myself to go beyond my
abilities.”

Joel Gammah ’26, a computer science major from Ghana, made a Terrier connection that led
to a transformative summer internship thanks to a conversation with Wofford College
President Nayef Samhat.
In the spring Gammah was on the guest list for a dinner for international students at the
President’s Home hosted by Nayef and Prema Samhat. During a conversation with the
president, Gammah shared stories of his work as a Bonner Scholar at the Adult Learning
Center in Spartanburg. Samhat immediately texted Bill Brasington ’89, executive director of
the Adult Learning Center, to expand the connection.

Eckert’s landscapes on display at Richardson Family Art
Gallery
“Essence of a Moment,” featuring the work of David Eckert, is on exhibit through July 26 at
the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts. The Richardson Family Art Gallery is
open to the public from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 1-7 p.m.
Saturday. Eckert, of Asheville, North Carolina, is a landscape painter who works in acrylic on
canvas. His paintings are inspired by the natural surroundings of the places he has lived.
A closing reception will be held at 5:30 p.m., July 26 at the gallery.

Wofford College Alumni Art Exhibition
The Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts will be the site of the inaugural
Wofford College Alumni Art Exhibition, scheduled for display Sept. 13 through Oct. 27. All
alumni are invited to enter up to three pieces of work for consideration The work must be no
larger than 48 inches by 48 inches. The jurors are Jim Hackney ’77 and Blake Batten ’23.

WoCo Showtime ready to shine
Fletcher Magee ’19 takes aim in The Basketball Tournament.
The Basketball Tournament, a $1 million, winner-take-all summer basketball event broadcast
live on FOX networks, will see the return of WoCo Showtime, a Wofford alumni team. 
WoCo Showtime, seeded third, will play in the Lexington Regional, with games at Rupp
Arena from July 19-23. The team is coached and organized by former Terrier basketball
graduate Bobby Perez ’18, who is assisted by Travis Viers. The roster includes Keve Aluma
’21, Isaiah Bigelow ’22, Chevez Goodwin ’20, Tray Hollowell ’21, Ryan Larson ’22, Fletcher
Magee ’19 and Storm Murphy ’21. Spencer Collins ’16, B.J. Mack ’23 and Howard Wilkerson
III ’06 have also joined the team along with former ETSU forward Brad Nuckles and Zachary
Vieria, who attended Auburn University.
The team will hold an open scrimmage at 6:30 p.m., July 17 in the Jerry Richardson
Indoor Stadium. Admission is free and kids will be invited to shoot with the team at
halftime.

Kai Nitsche ’96 leads Dunlop to major ITA partnership
Kai Nitsche '96, Dunlop Sports Americas vice president and general manager, recently
announced a major coup for his company. On July 1, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association,
the governing body of college tennis, named Dunlop the official tennis ball of the ITA and
college tennis. Additionally, Dunlop will be the exclusive racquet and accessory brand of the
ITA, including strings, grips and bags.
“The ITA is not only the home of college tennis but also the home to future leaders in our
sport,” Nitsche says. “More student tennis athletes are playing professionally than ever
before, with many more going on to become coaches and industry professionals serving
future generations. Dunlop is excited to become the official and exclusive partner to the ITA
to continue to grow the sport that we love by giving them access to our extensive range of
industry-leading products.”
In other news, Rob Galloway ’15, an ATP Tour pro who is sponsored by Dunlop, won his
second doubles title on June 29 at the Mallorca Open.

This Indenture made the eighth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight 
hundred thirty five, Between Elisha Thrower and Elizabeth his wife and John Inabinet, 
Jos. Inabinet, T. Faulling, C. Wilson, J. Cumings, Ja. Blanton, J. Pegler, and their 
successor Trustees in Trust for the uses and purposes hereinafter mentioned all of the 
state aforesaid, of the other Part, that the said Elisha Thrower and Elizabeth his wife for 
and in consideration of the sum of fifty cent _______, to Elisha Thrower in hand paid, at 
and before the sealing and delivery of the presents the receipt where of is hereby 
acknowledges I have given, granted, bargained, confirmed and conveyed and by these 
presents do give grant, bargain, conform and convey unto them the said John Inabinet,  
J. Inabinet, T. Faulling, C. Wilson, John Cumings, James Blanton, Jacob Pegler and 
their successors Trustees in Trust for the uses and purposes hereinafter mentioned.  All 
the Estate right with interest and demand whatever either in Law or Equity which he the 
said Elisha Thrower and Elizabeth his wife have into or when all __________ a certain 
lot or piece of land situate lying and being within Parish District and State aforesaid.  
Bound and Butted as represented by a Plat accompanying this Deed, Drawn and signed 
by Hardy H. Chinners  _____ Surveyor dated August 14, 1819 containing and laid out 
for Two acres of land  - Together with all our singular the houses, woods, waterways, 
privileges and appenditures thereinto belonging or in any wise appertaining - To Have 
and To Hold all and singular the above mentioned lot or piece of land, situate lying and 
being as aforesaid, together with all houses ____ as aforesaid there to belonging or 
appertaining unto  them the said J. Inabinet, Jos. Inabinet, T. Faulling, C. Wilson, J. 
Cumming, J. Blanton, J. Pegler their successors in office forever in Trust that the House 
of worship now thereon or a new one if necessary be retained and taken care of for the 
use of the members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, 
according to the Rules and discipline which from time to time may be agreed on and 
adopted by the minister/preacher of the said church and their General Conference in the 
United States of America and in further Trust and confidence that they shall at all times 
forever hereafter permit such minister/preacher belonging to the said church as shall 
from time to time be duly authorized by ____ the annual conference authorized by said 
general conference to preach God’s Holy Word therein _____ further trust and 
confidence that as often as one or more of the Trustees before mentioned shall die, or 
cease to be a member or members of the said church, according to the rules of 
discipline as aforesaid, then it shall be the duty of the stationed minister or preacher 
(authorized as aforesaid) who shall have the Pastoral Charge of the members of the 
said Church to call a meeting of the remaining trustees, as soon as conveniently may 
be, and when met, the said minister or preacher shall proceed to nominate one or more 
persons to fill the vacancy or vacancies which has or have been occasioned as 
aforesaid – Provided the person or persons so nominated shall have been one year a 
member or members of said Church immediately preceding such nomination and shall 
be at least Twenty One years of age and the said Trustees so assembled shall proceed 
to elect by a majority of votes appoint the person or persons as nominated to fill such 
vacancy or vacancies in order to keep up the number of five, seven or nine trustees 
forever, and in case of an equal number of votes for or against the said nomination, the 
stationed minister or preacher shall have the casting vote and the said Elisha Thrower 
doth by these present Warrant and forever defend all and singular the before mentioned 
lot or piece of land with the appurtenance these to belonging unto these the said J. 
Inabinet, Jos. Inabinet, T. Faulling, C. Wilson, J. Cumings, J. Blanton, J. Pegler and their 
successors chosen and appointed as aforesaid from the claims or claims of him the said 
Elisha Thrower his being and signs and from this claim or claims of all persons 
whatever.  In Testimony where of the land Elisha Thrower and Elizabeth his wife have 
hereunto set their hands and seals this day and year aforesaid

South Carolina, St James Goose Creek.  Personally appeared John Mafey one of the 
subsequent witnesses to the _______ Deed of Conveyance and made out according to 
Law that he was present and saw Elisha Thrower and Elizabeth Thrower sign and 
deliver this said Deed of Conveyance and that Mary Harvey and Elizabeth Riggs 
witnessed the execution of the same.  Given before me this 25 day of April 1835.  John
