Alcatraz. Through it all, the 
students bonded, cooking 
together at night, sharing tales of 
their escapades around 
campfires, supporting each other 
as we ascended rocky 
mountains, and singing along to 
our You-So-Mighty playlist in 
the van. While Environmental 
Studies was well represented on 
the trip, we had a wide variety of 
majors and all class years on the 
trip. The bond we formed will 
last longer than California itself, 
and when Point Reyes has 
finally ridden away along the 
San Andreas Fault, the glory of 
this interim will still endure.

     I knew it would be a good 
interim when I woke up to a sleet-
covered morning. The intramural 
fields were covered with white 
mush, and the sun looked like it 
needed its batteries changed. And 
yet, as the students emerged from 
their frozen tents, they were in 
good spirits and happily set about 
packing up camp. As we tromped 
away, Dr. Savage and I felt warm 
– we would be glad to take these 
14 students to California. 
     The California interim featured 
every kind of rugged adventure 
you could hope for – weather, 
mountains, wildlife, and 
questionable goat cheese. We saw 
gaping scenery from Big Sur to 
Yosemite National Park, followed 
deer trails through snow up to our 
stomachs, sought gold in the 
Sierra Foothills, and escaped from

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Duke University – Nicholas School of the Environment

     In 1991, The School of Environment, later 
renamed Nicholas School of the Environment, 
brought together the three divisions of The School of 
Forestry and Environmental Studies and the 
University’s Marine Laboratory. 
     Students interested in a Master of Environmental 
Management (MEM) can choose from eight 
specialized concentrations to focus their studies.  A 
Master of Forestry is offered for students interested 
in sustainable management of forested ecosystems.  
Either of these two on-campus programs can be

combined concurrently with a master’s in business, 
law, public policy, engineering or education.  And 
both are two-year programs. 
     Students can also pursue a Master of 
Environmental Policy, which studies international 
environmental policy at Duke Kunshan University 
in China.

environmental studies program in Vermont (June 23-August 4) with undergraduate

Application Deadline - Biosphere 2 Summer Program:  The University of Arizona will 
hold a 10-week research experience for undergraduates (June 5-August 11, 2017) in 
environmental and Earth system sciences.  Stipend, lodging, food allowance, and

Atlas Organics Internship: This unpaid internship position would primarily involve 
monitoring, assisting, and educating with a schoolwide lunch composting and 
recycling program at Wade Hampton High in Greenville.  At least 10 hours per 
month, maximum of 40 hours per month, intern is needed during lunch hours only

Southeastern Friends of the Pleistocene*:  Lecture in Olin 101 – “Revisiting the forgotten 
1930s and early 1940s Piedmont research of the Soil Conservation Service: landscape erosion, 
legacy sediments and deeply buried organic deposits.”  In the 1930s and early 1940s 
Spartanburg County was the focus of intensive landscape research by the US Soil 
Conservation Service. Much of this research has been almost completely forgotten, but 
is as relevant today as it was then, and provides a unique opportunity to revisit and 
discuss field localities 75 to 80 years after they were first investigated.

     I have always taken water for 
granted. We live on a boldly flowing 
piedmont stream. We can see the 
flow from our bedroom windows. 
That is why last week's spring break 
trip to visit Borderlands Restoration 
made such a huge impact on me. 
Retired director of the Odum School 
of Ecology at UGA, Ron Pulliam 
and his staff have one vision: make 
desert streams around Patagonia flow 
once more. Ron shared generously of 
his time-- showing us the green 
houses where Borderlands grows the 
plants they need for riparian 
restoration, several of their research 
sites (like the magical Deep Dirt 
Farm, and the ridge top trail just 
opened through a major wildlife 
corridor).  
     Last summer two Wofford 
students completed internships at 
Borderlands (Karen Gravely and 
Sam Parrott) and each did significant 
work Ron still likes to show off.

Connecting environmental microbiology with public and ecosystem 
health, Dr. Lipp’s research interests include water and sanitation, 
climate change, and coral disease ecology, as well as transmission 
of enteric pathogens.
DR. GREGORY T. VALAINIS  
Professor of Medicine at the Medical University 
of South Carolina
A specialist in infectious disease, Dr. Valainis received his medical 
degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and completed his 
residency in internal medicine while serving as chief resident at the 
University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville, FL.
DR. ANDREW MONAGHAN
Scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric 
Research, Boulder, CO
A co-leader of the NCAR Weather, Climate and Health Program, Dr. 
Monaghan’s research primarily focuses on climate-sensitive health and 
disease issues including meteorological linkages with human plague, 
meningitis, dengue and Zika viruses, Lyme disease and West Nile virus.

University of Georgia – Master of Public Health

     UGA’s College of Public Health offers a Master 
of Public Health with concentrations in disaster 
management, gerontology, environmental health 
science, epidemiology & biostatistics, health policy 
& management, and health promotion & behavior. 
     This 2-year program is designed for health 
professionals who wish to expand their skills, 
knowledge, and expertise, and for students who 
wish to build a career in public health. There are 
also several dual-degree programs and certificate 
programs.  Students learn service and leadership in

public health through coursework and field 
experiences.   
     Dr. Erin Lipp is the graduate coordinator and 
one of our visiting speakers for the Milliken 
Lectures Series on Sustainability and Public 
Health.  She will be on campus next week and

Long-Term Ecological Reflection by Professor John Lane

considered	  history,	  both	  human	  and	  natural.	  I	  tried	  to	  think	  and	  reflect	  as	  deeply	  as	  I	  could.	  You’ll	  have	  to	  wait	  to	  see	  what	  I	  came	  up	  with.	  	  	  You	  may	  not	  know	  it,	  but	  when	  our	  Goodall	  Environmental	  Studies	  Building	  opened	  in	  2009	  we	  made	  a	  similar	  commitment	  to	  150	  years	  in	  Glendale.	  We	  bought	  a	  ledger	  to	  record	  things	  in,	  and	  we	  wrote	  about	  long-­‐term	  reflection	  and	  put	  up	  a	  plaque	  about	  it	  over	  our	  ledger	  book.	  We’re	  almost	  ten	  years	  in	  now!	  Flip	  back	  through	  it	  the	  next	  time	  you	  are	  in	  the	  building	  and	  read	  the	  plaque.	  	  	  It	  would	  be	  great	  if	  in	  the	  future	  we	  could	  establish	  a	  series	  of	  spots	  on	  the	  property	  where	  we	  could	  ask	  visitors,	  students,	  faculty,	  and	  staff	  to	  reflect	  on	  Glendale.	  Maybe	  in	  one	  of	  our	  classes	  this	  year	  we’ll	  get	  our	  students	  to	  make	  recommendations	  on	  the	  six	  best	  places.

This	  summer	  I	  was	  invited	  to	  go	  to	  Penn	  State	  University’s	  Shaver’s	  Creek	  Environmental	  Center	  for	  a	  week	  and	  take	  part	  in	  their	  “long-­‐term	  ecological	  reflection”	  program.	  What	  that	  means	  is	  that	  I	  visited	  the	  Center,	  stayed	  there	  in	  a	  rustic	  cabin,	  and	  visited	  six	  sites	  that	  have	  been	  visited	  so	  far	  by	  ten	  other	  environmental	  writers	  in	  the	  first	  ten	  years	  of	  the	  program.	  I	  was	  asked	  to	  reflect—in	  either	  poetry	  or	  prose—about	  each	  of	  the	  sites.	  Some	  of	  what	  I	  wrote	  will	  be	  collected	  next	  year	  in	  a	  book	  about	  the	  program	  edited	  by	  Ian	  Marshall,	  the	  originator	  of	  the	  Shaver’s	  Creek	  program.	  	  	  What	  makes	  the	  program	  unique	  is	  that	  the	  plan	  is	  for	  it	  to	  continue	  for	  140	  more	  years!	  That’s	  what	  I’d	  call	  “long	  term.”	  	  	  While	  I	  was	  in	  Pennsylvania	  I	  thought	  a	  great	  deal	  about	  the	  Goodall	  Center.	  As	  I	  reflected	  I

New York University – MA in Environmental Conservation Education

     NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, 
and Human Development offers a MA in 
Environmental Conservation Education.  Students 
study environmental education, environmental 
thought, environmental politics, and ecology and 
can choose from a wide range of electives such as 
environmental policy, environmental history, 
economics, biology and education.   
     NYU’s urban experience offers students the 
opportunity to intern with well-known organizations 
such as the Audubon Society, Department of 
Environmental Protection, and the United Nations.

     Also the program offers the opportunity to take 
classes within NYU’s Steinhardt’s Science 
Education program and the Wallerstein 
Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education 
and the Wagner Graduate School of Public 
Service. 
     The program is ideally suited for those who 
have a demonstrated interest in environmental 
issues and/or education.
