Charlie Gray ’72, who is stepping down this month after having served as a member of
the Wofford staff for 44 years! The celebration will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday,
June 8, at the Carlisle-Wallace House on campus (home of Dean Bigger). Charlie is
the longest-serving (in terms of consecutive years of service) employee of the college
and has been our director of admission, director of alumni and parents programs, and
for the past year has helped to give birth to our Lifelong Learning Program as director
of continuing education.

10. We are expecting more than 400 students and parents.  
The Student Affairs staff and the student Orientation Staff will welcome our incoming
students and their families on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Great Oaks Hall
in the Roger Milliken Science Center.
Please join us for some or all of this casual reception to meet and greet our newest
students and their parents.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
 
The Carolina Panthers return for the 22nd year of training camp at Wofford College and
Spartanburg on Thursday, July 28, and we’re excited!
 
Once again, there will be lots of activities for the community – and lots of volunteer
opportunities for you!
 
They include the Lowe’s Kickoff Party and Mayors Ball Run on Thursday, July 28, and
Panthers Pals kids program throughout camp (see dates/times on the volunteer form at the
link below).
 
We’d love to have you volunteer! Please review the volunteer opportunities and
register for your preferred slots at:

You will enter your name, age, email and cell number, along with an emergency contact
name and telephone number, and select the events/dates and shifts for which you wish to
volunteer.
 
This year, instead of volunteer T-shirts, all volunteers will receive special polo-style
Panthers shirts. Therefore, we will need to know your shirt size; shirts run slightly large.
Please indicate size on the form.
 
Also, volunteers will be required to attend a mandatory volunteer training event before the
opening of camp – date to be determined; assigned volunteers will receive a separate email
with details about this training event. It is mandatory. If you do not attend, you will be
replaced on the volunteer/ambassador schedule. At the session, you will receive training,
your shirt and appropriate credentials, depending on your volunteer position or job.
 
In the cases of two available shifts for the same day/duties (kickoff party), you may
volunteer for both shifts. You may select as many slots as you wish. Then, hit “submit” at
the bottom of the form. You will be informed via email of your assignments and any special
instructions.
 
Slots will be filled on a first-come basis and as needs necessitate. You are not guaranteed
a slot. If your requested slots are filled, your name will be kept on a waiting list and you will
be notified if a slot becomes available.
 
All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
 
 
PLEASE NOTE that volunteers are not permitted to request photographs or autographs
from players or coaches.

This summer Wofford College will undertake a search for a new Chief Information
Officer as head of Information Technology. The search committee is composed of Dr.
Bob Moss, McCalla Professor of Biology; Dr. Anne Catllà, Associate Professor of
Mathematics; Amy Lancaster, Dean of International Programs; Richard Johnson,
Director of Athletics; Raymond Ruff, Director of Institutional Research; Dexter
McCarter, Database Administrator; Chris Gardner, Associate Vice President for
Finance and Controller; and Demario Watts, Assistant Director of Residence Life. The
search will conclude July 20, and we hope to have our new CIO on campus by the
beginning of fall classes.
 
Throughout the summer, Jason Womick, Vice President for Information Technology, will
continue to serve as Interim VP for IT. Upon the arrival of the new CIO, Jason will take
on new responsibilities and a new title as Director of Instructional Technology and Data
Analytics.  After his years of service and commitment to leading our IT team, we are
grateful to Jason for taking on the challenge of this new position that will provide
enhanced technical support to faculty and students in the classroom and enrich our
capacities in Institutional Research.

have a sense of social responsibility as 
an environmental scientist; to 
thoroughly and objectively analyze 
any major possible impact to safe 
drinking water or unpolluted air and 
to offer solutions to protect our 
resources. 
I also spent a large portion of my time 
exploring the breathtaking mountains 
that appeared as if they were within 
arm’s reach everywhere I went. The 
monsoon season that brought life to 
the mountains made it so that I could 
even swim in waterfalls. Becoming 
intimate with the land surrounding 
Biosphere 2, the facility I lived in, 
was another adventure. Isolated from 
any major town or city, I became 
acquainted with javelinas, gila 
monsters, bobcats, rattlesnakes, and 
the surprisingly aggressive gopher 
snake. I am so thankful to experience 
something that has impacted me so 
deeply.

It was scorching hot, bone dry, and 
truly one of my best life experiences 
so far. My summer conducting 
hydrogeochemical research in 
Tucson, Arizona, forever impacted 
me as a scholar and a community 
member. Not only did I have the 
opportunity to delve into the 
chemical analysis of copper mining’s 
impact on groundwater quality, but I 
learned what it meant to be a 
scientist conducting research on a 
controversial topic. It was fascinating 
learning about the opposition and 
support, and their opinions on 
mining in the arid Southwest. My 
adopted community for the summer 
taught me how important it was to 
Morel enjoyed her 
summer internship with 
Biosphere 2 exploring the 
landscape of Arizona.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities 
PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
University of Vermont – MS in Natural Resources

     The Rubenstein School of Environment & Natural 
Resources maintains a small graduate program of 70-100 
students to keep a personal and community-oriented 
atmosphere.  Their masters program in natural resources 
offers concentrations in aquatic ecology and watershed 
science; environment, society and public affairs; 
environmental thought and culture; forest sciences and 
wildlife sciences. 
     The aquatic ecology and watershed science 
concentration works closely with the Vermont Water 
Resources and Lake Studies Center and the Vermont 
Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit to provide students with 
training and research experience in the aquatic sciences.  
Students in the environment, society and public affairs

concentration focus on social issues that include land 
use planning, policy and planning, ecological 
economics, and park and wilderness management.  The 
environmental thought and culture concentration is an 
individually designed Master’s degree with a 
foundation in the ethical and philosophical traditions 
that inform environmental theory and action.  The 
forest sciences and wildlife sciences concentrations 
work closely together while maintaining their 
traditional and individual distinctions, allowing 
students to choose from a broad range of topics -- from 
sustainable forests to wildlife habitats.

Connecting Capstones to Life by Professor John Lane

after graduating from the 
University of Georgia Law School 
and passing the bar. “Warmer, 
Safer, Drier: Three Summers 
Working in Appalachia” weighed 
in at 83 pages and I remember she 
had a fluid lively prose style that 
was a joy to edit and read. 
     We’ve come a long way with 
capstones. This year’s exciting 
projects will be presented in the 
spring at a public event. Students 
are finishing them up this week! 
We’ve discovered that it’s the 
capstone experience that students 
often point back to and say that it’s 
where they learned a great deal. I 
think it’s fun to see direct lines 
from a capstone to the work 
students are doing in the world 
today. Thank you, Jill for keeping 
us updated on your writing!

Last week the mail brought a very 
exciting envelope—inside was a law 
journal, THE GEORGIA 
JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL 
AND COMPARATIVE LAW 
(Volume 43, No. 3 Spring 2015)—
containing a publication by one Jill 
T. Hauserman entitled “Water, 
Water Everywhere, But Just How 
Much is Clean? Examining Water 
Quality Restoration Efforts Under 
the United States Clean Water Act 
and the United States-Canada Great 
Lakes Water Quality Agreement.” 
     Jill graduated in our first full class 
of environmental studies majors in 
spring of 2011, our first group of 
eight majors.  Back then we were all 
pioneers, trying to find our way into 
an academic form we were shaping 
for our majors. It’s fun to look back 
and ponder how much hard work 
went into those first capstones in 
those first years! 
Jill wrote the longest capstone I’ve 
ever had—so it’s no surprise she’s 
gone on to write for law journals,

Dominican University of California – GreenMBA

     Established in 2002 at the New College of 
California, and then acquired by Dominican 
University of California in 2007, the GreenMBA 
program is the nation's first Master’s of Business 
Administration in Sustainable Enterprise.  Students 
have the option of completing the program in one or 
two years with full or part-time structure. 
     “Today the program seeks to integrate business 
and environmentalism and to educate a new 
generation of leaders who are able to bridge the gaps 
among environmentally sound, socially responsible

and financially successful business practices.”  
Concentrations also let you specialize in global 
business or strategic leadership. The program 
focuses on leadership, team-building, and 
communications skills. 
     Dominican has received a bronze level ranking 
in sustainability, according to the Sustainability 
Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) of 
the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in 
Higher Education (AASHE).

Independent Interim with Dr. Ferguson

     During Interim, ENVS seniors Ben 
Thomas and Mareli Sanchez 
conducted research with Dr. 
Ferguson on the Big Ferguson Creek 
watershed near Woodruff, where they 
conducted field work and performed 
spatial analysis using Geographic 
Information Systems (GIS) to 
evaluate changes in erosion that have 
occurred over time.  
     Ben and Dr. Ferguson conducted 
the field-based portion of the study, 
where they used several tools 
including a TOTAL station, soil 
probe, and a soil auger to create a 450 
ft. detailed cross section across the 
creek. The new profile was compared 
to a previous study done in the 1940s. 
     Mareli created a GIS database to 
represent the watershed using various 
forms of data, such as aerial 
photographs taken at different time 
periods and LiDAR, a high-resolution 
mapping system using remote sensing

laser-based technology that analyzes 
reflected light and measures 
distance. Her data will be used to 
assess the severity of erosion as a 
result of harsh farming practices 
from the 1800s to the present.  
     Both Ben and Mareli learned how 
to design and carry out a research 
project and found collaborating with 
Dr. Ferguson and other professors to 
be a very rewarding and invaluable 
experience.

with Nature” Interim focusing 
on biomimicry, natural 
building, and permaculture. 
The group worked with guest 
experts including Margo 
Farnsworth (biomimicry), 
Kelley Adair (natural paints) 
and James Toye (bamboo). 
Several of the final projects 
developed features in the 
Goodall Center garden.

Antioch University New England – Environmental Studies

     Antioch University, located in New Hampshire, 
offers an MS in Environmental Studies with several 
different areas of concentration including 
Conservation Biology, Environmental Education, 
Advocacy for Social Justice and Sustainability, and 
Sustainable Development and Climate Change.  A 
concentration in Science Teacher Certification in 
Middle Level Science and Life Sciences is also 
available and is the only program of its kind in the 
country.   
     There is also an MS in Resource Management

and Conservation, designed for working 
professionals who want to build on their 
environmental management skills, and a PhD in 
Environmental Studies.   
     An MBA in Sustainability, also referred to as a

adopted waterway.  Location: USC-Upstate Watershed Ecology Center.  To register

     In the end, Nature still wins.  
     We live, we often say, in the 
Anthropocene, in an era where people 
control nature at the level of a 
geological force. And I think it’s true. 
Beyond human impacts on the 
atmosphere, the water cycle, and all 
that, consider your own personal 
environment right now. The world, as 
you look around you, is almost 
entirely controlled by human beings. 
We spend our days indoors, staring at 
glowing rectangles, in temperatures in 
the high 60s. When we go outside, the 
plants we see around us are planted 
and maintained by other people. It 
takes a real effort to reach a spot 
where the world around us is more or 
less natural.

     And yet we saw this week that 
nature controls us still. A certain 
combination of precipitation and 
temperature, and South Carolina 
shuts down. At the same time, we’d 
hoped and planned to welcome Carl 
Safina to Wofford, but his first flight 
was canceled and his second had to 
turn around in the air. Our 
technology could not overcome the 
weather. And really, what the 
Anthropocene is, is people trying to 
channel and work through nature, 
and while we’ve done amazing 
things, in the end, nature is stronger. 
We must not forget it. 
Carl Safina’s visit is rescheduled for 
March 31. Details coming soon!

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Tulane University – Environmental Law

     Tulane Law School offers six certificates of 
specialization, which includes environmental law. It 
is the 12th oldest law school in the nation and was 
established in 1847.    
     In addition to the law program, The 
Environmental Law Society (ELS) is one of the 
oldest and most active environmental law volunteer 
student groups in the nation.   ELS provides a 
diverse forum for environmental activists, 
connecting law students with the local, statewide, 
and nationwide environmental communities.  The

Society hosts an annual Tulane Law School Summit 
on Environmental Law and Policy, a nationwide and 
entirely student-run public interest conference that 
discusses the day's most pressing environmental 
concerns.  
    Additionally, ELS presents and sponsors diverse 
speakers, organizes campus-renowned hiking, 
camping, canoeing, and bicycle trips and 
maintains the law school’s recycling program.

Reception and discussion for “The Beauty of the Natural World in Pictures and Words”: 
Photographic works of biologist Phil Wilkinson and the poems of Libby Bernadine are 
now on display in the Great Oaks Hall through mid-March. Both artists will be on 
hand at the March 1st reception to share stories and answer questions.  Following this 
Wilkinson will be in Milliken 121 to discuss his fieldwork and research on the 
reproductive biology of alligators as well as introduce exciting opportunities for 
students to participate in similar research around the South Carolina coast.

The story of the mercenary armies of Carthage is one of incompetence and disaster, followed by clever innovation. It is a story not just of battles and betrayal, but also of the interactions between dissimilar peoples in a multiethnic army trying to coordinate, fight, and win, while commanded by a Punic officer corps which may or may not have been competent. Carthaginian mercenaries are one piece of a larger narrative about the struggle between Carthage and Rome for dominance in the Western Mediterranean, and their history illustrates the evolution of the mercenary system employed by the Carthaginian Empire to extend her power and ensure her survival

movement is slow (geologically 
slow). However certain plants 
thrive at certain altitudes relative to 
sea level and at certain 
temperatures. Those ideal levels 
will be in different places with 
increasing temperatures. It might 
be tempting to say "so what?" The 
potential for detrimental impacts 
on agriculture is a "so what". 
Extinction because of habitat 
destruction is a "so what". 
     Kelly practices environmental 
law and his presentation reflected 
his passion for the environment and 
his effort to maintain the 
environment's health. It was a treat 
to have him back on campus. A 
number of visitors including former 
deans and local environmental 
attorneys were visitors in the class.

     Kelly Lowry ’92, an alumnus of 
Wofford and Vermont School of 
Law, was back at Wofford to speak 
to environmental studies students 
and visitors to Dr. Simmons’s Health 
and the Environment class on 
November 2nd. His presentation 
reviewed the evidence and attitudes 
about climate change in general, then 
focused on impacts to various 
environments that will result from 
climate change. He ended his talk 
with a discussion of migration of 
various plants and animals as a result 
of changes that will occur due to 
warming of the atmosphere and the 
earth's surface. The impact on plants 
and animals from rising sea levels 
was also addressed. 
     Of particular interest was the 
migration of plants. People can't 
picture plants moving because such
