We Welcome Dr. Brad Blackwell to Wofford 
Students in ENVS 
101 spent their 
Wednesday 
afternoon lab at 
Croft State Park 
studying the idea of 
wilderness with Dr. 
Telligman.  
Beyond the 100th Meridian, and I 
began to think that a career in 
environmental science would suit 
me well. 
I started my educational career at 
Lubbock Christian University and 
earned my degree in environmental 
science.  I later earned a master’s 
degree at Texas Christian University 
and completed a PhD at Syracuse 
University.  Before coming to 
Wofford, I was a researcher at the 
Environmental Protection Agency, 
where I studied the impacts of 
agricultural runoff on downstream 
estuarine ecosystems.  I am looking 
forward to the opportunity to teach 
students about various aspects of the 
environment at Wofford, and I also 
hope to be involved in research that 
addresses local and regional 
environmental issues. 
I grew up in rural western 
Oklahoma, and I spent the first 18 
years of my life exploring and 
learning to appreciate the harsh 
prairie ecosystem.  My father was a 
ranger for the US Forest Service, and 
he regularly took me on field trips 
when I was very young.  My earliest 
memories involve being outdoors, 
and my fascination with natural 
ecosystems has been a part of me for 
as long as I can remember.  Since 
leaving Oklahoma, I have spent time 
in the desert, on the Gulf Coast, and 
in the mountains of the Northeast.  I 
have yet to meet an ecosystem that I 
don’t like.   
My initial interest in environmental 
issues stemmed from my high school 
years. I recognized that activities like 
natural gas development and farming 
were having noticeable impacts on 
the areas that I liked to hunt and fish.  
I read books like Cadillac Desert and 
In his spare time, Dr. Blackwell 
enjoys fishing and kayaking in the 
great outdoors. He is teaching Intro 
to Earth System Science, Air 
Quality & the Environment, and 
Developing Capstone Proposal 
classes this semester. In the spring, 
he will teach Quantitative Methods 
& Modeling and Climate Change.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Bath Spa University – MA Literature, Landscape and Environment 
 
 
 
 
     Bath Spa University is located in the English 
countryside at Corsham Court campus in Wiltshire, 
England and offers a MA in Literature, Landscape 
and Environment.  The program transitions from 
undergraduate work to researching and writing at a 
post-graduate level.  It offers environmental writing 
and ecocriticism with regional resources and 
opportunities for fieldwork in this one-year fulltime 
or two-year part-time program. 
     The MA examines how literature reflects and shapes 
the way in which we see the landscape and the 
environment.  It is designed for students interested in 
further study or for those looking for careers in the 
rapidly expanding green industry. 
     One of our past Santee Cooper Lecture Series 
guest speakers, Terry Gifford, has taught as a 
visiting scholar at BSU’s Centre for Writing and 
Environment since 2011.  His classes include 
modern poetry, creative writing research, and 
literature and environment.

lecture.  Maps will be provided for Bike to Work and Bike to ArtWalk.  The group will 
gather at RJ Rockers at 8:00pm for Art on Tap.  Join the Wofford Sustainability

designing a passive solar room 
addition, and making other space 
modifications.  
     Wofford College’s new Energy 
Sustainability Manager, Rob 
Richards, has been helping an 
energy conservation team identify 
opportunities for energy savings by 
evaluating items such as the 
presence of floor, ceiling, and wall 
insulation and the efficiency of the 
water heater and hot water lines. 
Along the way, the team has 
calculated the costs and benefits 
associated with a variety of 
upgrades and has developed a 
tiered list of recommendations. 
     Next Thursday the class will 
present their findings to Professor 
Lane’s senior seminar class.

     During the past three weeks Dr. 
Telligman’s ENVS 151 class has been 
developing plans to make the 
Glendale House more sustainable. 
The house, purchased by Wofford 
through the Milliken Sustainability 
grant, was built in 1902 and was 
initially planned as a duplex rented to 
families of millworkers. 
     Greg Olson, a solar planner from 
Asheville, NC with over 30 years of 
solar design and teaching experience, 
is helping direct the four-week 
project. A student landscape team is 
exploring ways to optimize heating 
and cooling of the house through tree 
and plant shading and water 
conservation – including plans for a 
rain catchment system. They have 
also created an idea for an outdoor 
living space comfortable for all 
seasons. An architectural team is 
developing ways to improve living 
patterns in the house by restructuring 
the narrow and steep stairwells,

     Virginia Tech’s Center for Leadership in Global 
Sustainability offers a Masters of Natural Resources 
(MNR).   
     Designed as a professional degree, the MNR is 
offered in three different formats to meet the needs 
of an increasingly diverse audience—a 100% Online 
format (MNR); a Global format (GMNR) for those 
looking for extensive international experience; and 
an Executive format (XMNR) for professionals with 
significant prior work experience. Each of the three 
MNR formats are 30-credit, non-thesis programs

that provide an interdisciplinary perspective, 
transformative experience, and international 
exchange as core elements of the curriculum. The 
MNR degree does not require a GRE for

increasing presence of this mezo-predator among us.

Southeastern Friends of the Pleistocene*:  “Revisiting the forgotten 1930s and early 1940s 
Piedmont research of the Soil Conservation Service: landscape erosion, legacy sediments and 
deeply buried organic deposits.”  In the 1930s and early 1940s Spartanburg County was 
the focus of intensive landscape research by the US Soil Conservation Service. Much 
of this research has been almost completely forgotten, but is as relevant today as it was 
then, and provides a unique opportunity to revisit and discuss field localities 75 to 80 
years after they were first investigated.

“Coyote Research on the Savannah River Site”*:  John Kilgo ’89 is a research wildlife 
biologist with the US Forest Service Southern Research Station’s Center for Forest 
Watershed Research in Aiken, SC.  Since 2005, he has studied the ecology of coyotes 
and their effects on Southeastern ecosystems, particularly deer populations, and for the 
past three years he has also been studying wild pigs.

     Yesterday the Environmental Studies 
class of 2017 gathered in the Anna Todd 
Wofford room to present their capstone 
projects. A gaggle of other 
environmental studies students, alums, 
and parents assembled to take in the 
seniors’ posters, and to listen to talks by 
Liam Maley, Madison Jones, and 
Garrett Heath. On the way in, they were 
greeted by Matt Aurednik’s tiny house 
(see picture above). The projects were 
diverse and dynamic, from solar power 
to green horsekeeping to Glendale 
mycology to sustainable athletics. It’s 
fair to say that everyone did great work. 
     It all made me very proud. Many of 
these seniors were in the first class I ever 
taught at Wofford, Environmental 
Studies 101 in Fall 2014, and I have, of 
course, taught all of them over the years 
between then and now (including a 
capstone class last fall). It has been 
wonderful to see them develop as 
scholars and as people, and to see the 
culmination of their work here. They 
will all be missed as they head out into 
the world, but we are all happy and 
confident that they will do great things.

Vermont Law School – Environmental Law Center

     The Environmental Law Center (ELC) at 
Vermont Law School boosts that it offers more 
environmental and energy law courses than any 
other U.S. law school.  It is ranked #1 in 
environmental law by the 2017 edition of U.S. News 
& World Report’s Best Grad Schools. 
     ELC offers several masters degrees including a 
Master of Environmental Law and Policy (MELP), 
Master of Energy Regulation and Law (MERL), 
Master of Food and Agriculture Law and Policy 
(MFALP).  Each of these can be pursued jointly

with a JD degree.  Post-JD students have the 
opportunity to pursue a Masters of Law (LLM) in 
Energy Law, Environmental Law, American 
Legal Studies, or Food and Agriculture Law. Dual

during a term abroad, snapped 
photos for marketing. On the 
Andean side, coffee growers toiled 
for decades for a better future. The 
international cooperative 
movement gave them means to 
organize. Education in prestigious 
Peruvian universities sharpened 
their agricultural expertise. And 
finally, consumers who 
increasingly choose sustainable 
coffee created a market for the 
product. 
     Want some advice drawn from 
our mountaintop experience? 
Become part of an awesome story. 
Buy from or invest in farm-to-
consumer enterprises, learn a 
language, promote education, 
advocate for sound environmental 
practices, and take your liberal arts 
love into the world for good.

     Every once in a while, you get to 
see storylines of hard work converge 
in a single, energizing experience. 
Recently for me, that experience was 
36 hours in the Peruvian village of 
Cocochó during a trip I made as 
interpreter-friend of Little River 
Roasting, our local coffee company. 
     Our crew journeyed to meet a 
cooperative of farmers doing their 
best to do right by way of 
environmental, business, and 
community sustainability: they 
cultivate shade-grown, organic, fair 
trade, coffee in high elevation plots 
that nurture biodiversity and protect 
watersheds. 
     As the moon rose over the Andes, 
and our pickups pulled into the 
deeply rutted main street, people 
poured around us, welcome banners 
bobbed, and a band played. 
Storylines converged. Months before, 
an entrepreneur (and Wofford alum) 
took a calculated risk that aligned 
with his values and bought their

Yale University – School of Forestry & Environmental Studies

     Yale University offers several graduate degrees in 
the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.  
The Master of Forestry (MF), the oldest forestry 
program in the western hemisphere, is “designed for 
individuals who want to be at the forefront of forest 
resource management and policy.”  The Master of 
Environmental Management (MEM) “provides 
students with scientific understanding of ecological 
and social systems that can be applied in policy or 
management context.”  And the Master of Forest 
Science (MFS), and Master of Environmental

Science (MESc) are designed for students pursuing 
scientific research in forest related or non-forest 
related topics.   
     There are also several opportunities to pursue 
joint-degrees in Management (MBA), Law (JD), 
Architecture (MArch), International and 
Development Economics (MA), International 
Relations (MA), Divinity (MDiv or MAR), and

“Coyote Research on the Savannah River Site”*:  John Kilgo ’89 is a research wildlife 
biologist with the US Forest Service Southern Research Station’s Center for Forest 
Watershed Research in Aiken, SC.  Since 2005, he has studied the ecology of coyotes 
and their effects on Southeastern ecosystems, particularly deer populations, and for the 
past three years he has also been studying wild pigs.

Growing Greener at Goodall

foods available locally and from the 
garden, and exploring the contents of 
the garden’s educational out-building, 
the Aldo Leopold Shack (constructed 
in 2013 by Environmental Studies 
students Rob Kennedy, Rob 
Richardson, and Steven Bearden as 
part of their senior capstone project). 
     Emkjer founded the program in 
2012 as the Three Sisters Garden project. 
In 2015, Wofford partnered with the 
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate to 
receive grant support from TD Bank 
Foundation, developing the Growing 
Greener project, designed to enhance 
outreach efforts in environmental 
education.  The Growing Greener 
project welcomed three six-week 
sessions of 3rd-5th graders in 2015-16 to 
learn about planting and harvesting 
traditional crops, SC and Native 
American history, the sciences, 
healthy living, and caring for their 
environment. The fruits of that grant 
led to current support by the SC 
Department of Education. We’re 
proud to continue our partnership 
while deepening the roots of this 
outstanding educational program!

     Students from The Cleveland 
Academy of Leadership’s chapter of the 
Boys & Girls Club are meeting at the 
Goodall Center for the next six weeks to 
learn about farming and growing a 
garden with plants native to our region.  
Under the direction of program 
instructor Melisa Emkjer, and assistance 
from the Goodall Center’s garden 
manager, Steve Patton, the students are 
exploring the land and learning science 
in a fun and active setting.   
     This spring class brings third-graders 
to enjoy beautiful Glendale Shoals 
Preserve while immersing themselves in 
the Carolyn Fawcett Converse Garden. 
This group is already excited as they are 
keeping an eye on the strawberries, 
mulberries, and apples that are off to an 
abundant start thanks to the great spring 
weather so far. They'll be focusing on 
container planting (check out the deck!) 
this spring while planting carrots, beans, 
and radishes. Most of all, these 8 and 9 
year olds will be exploring nature and 
having fun-no batteries needed!  During 
class they spend time writing, drawing, 
and reflecting in gardening journals, 
creating nature-themed crafts, tasting

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Ohio State University – Environmental Sciences Graduate Program

      The Environmental Sciences Graduate Program 
(ESGP) at Ohio State University emphasizes 
research and applied teaching that will contribute to 
solving the world’s environmental problems. 
     ESGP is comprised of many departments within 
the OSU community providing an interdisciplinary 
education across physical, biological, and social 
sciences that deal with environmental issues.   
     ESPG students can pursue and obtain either a 
MS degree (thesis or non-thesis) and/or a Ph.D. 
degree. These students can select from four program

options: general study with no specialization; 
agroecosystems, a whole system approach to 
sustainable agriculture and food systems; climate 
change science and policy, research at both the 
scientific and policy-making level that can bridge 
the gap between social and natural sciences; and 
water issues, addressing global change, water 
quality and consequences of human activities.

follow sidewalks on Henry Street to the Spartanburg Earth Day

Spartanburg Earth Day Festival and Spartanburg Soaring: The Unitarian Universalist 
Church and Chapman Cultural Center will host these two events on Earth Day 2017.  
The Earth Day Festival will have vendors, informative booths, music, and family-
friendly activities (210 Henry Place).  A walkable scavenger hunt will connect this event 
with the Chapman Cultural Center’s International Kite Festival happening blocks 
away.
