service or visitation was held. This reception will provide an opportunity for friends to
meet the Millers’ daughter, Maggie.

Wednesday, July 5; work is expected to be completed by Sunday, July 9.
 
All vehicles will need to be removed from all locations within that parking lot; this includes the
spaces behind the Burwell Building and the Roger Milliken Science Center. (The parking lot
behind the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts will not be affected; access this
lot from Memorial Drive entrances.)
 
Vehicles remaining in the SMA lot when this work begins will be towed at the owner’s expense.

A Wofford employee was assaulted last night, June 21, at about 11 pm at Gibbs Stadium. Officers from the 
City of Spartanburg Police Department are currently assisting Campus Safety in attempting to locate the 
perpetrator. Students living on campus for the summer were made aware of the incident last night and 
were reminded to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious persons or activities to 
Campus Safety.
As a member of the Wofford community, the Office of Campus Safety would also like to remind our faculty 
and staff to be extra vigilant when it comes to your safety. Please be aware of your surroundings at all 
times, including strangers on campus. Please also remember not to prop open doors that should remain 
locked. In addition, Campus Safety officers are always willing to provide on-campus escorts should you 
need one. To report any unusual or suspicious activity to Campus Safety, or to request an escort, call 864-
597-4911.

The Carolina Panthers return for the 23rd year of training camp at Wofford College and
Spartanburg on Wednesday, July 26, and we’re excited!
 
Once again, there will be lots of activities for the community – and lots of volunteer
opportunities for you!
 
They include the Training Camp Kickoff Party on Wednesday, July 26; Panthers Pals kids
program throughout camp; and being greeters to visitors as they arrive at camp. (See
dates/times on the volunteer form at the link below).
 
We’d love to have you volunteer! Please review the volunteer opportunities and
register for your preferred slots at:

You must provide your name, age, email address and cell number, along with an emergency
contact name and telephone number, and select the events/dates and shifts for which you
wish to volunteer.
 
All volunteers will receive special polo-style Panthers shirts. Therefore, we will need to
know your shirt size; shirts run slightly large. Please indicate size on the form. (If you
volunteered last year and still have your shirt, please indicate that on the form.)
 
In the cases of two available shifts for the same day/duties (kickoff party), you may
volunteer for both shifts. You may select as many slots as you wish. Then, hit “submit” at
the bottom of the form. You will be informed via email of your assignments and any special
instructions.
 
Slots will be filled on a first-come basis and as needs necessitate. You are not guaranteed
a slot. If your requested slots are filled, your name will be kept on a waiting list and you will

Life After Wofford by Alex Hoots ’17 
View from Hoots’ office of the Colorado University – Boulder stadium! 
to make this worthwhile to the vendors, 
we created an incentive program 
awarding money to the top three stands 
that sort correctly. We do this is by 
tagging every bag that each concession 
stand uses. So, I head into game days 
about 7 hours before kickoff and start 
placing tags -- stickers with the vendor’s 
name and location -- on each compost, 
recycle, and landfill bag. Four hours 
prior to kickoff, a student comes with me 
to train all the vendors about “what goes 
where.” We meet with the vendors at set 
time to explain exactly what goes in the 
compost, recycle, and landfill bins.  
Now, what makes CU’s football stadium 
amazing besides the spectacular view of 
the Flatirons, is that it was the first 
NCAA Division 1 School to have a zero-
waste stadium! ‘SKO BUFFS!! This is all 
made possible by having a 
concessionaire, athletic department, 
sponsorships and the environmental 
stewards on board to create a zero-waste 
stadium.  
I am so incredibly thankful for this 
opportunity that has been given to me 
and it could not have been made possible 
without Dr. Telligman. 
 
Back in April when our thoughtful 
environmental studies professors invited 
two alumni to talk with the seniors about 
what they did after graduating, is when I 
really felt comfortable with the decision I 
had made for my plans after Wofford. 
My main take away from Karen Gravely 
’16 and Chris Underwood ’15 was that 
life after college is supposed to be an 
adventure. Don’t get tied down with 
something you don’t enjoy, and to be as 
cliché as possible, ‘follow your arrow 
wherever it points.’  
I decided to go out to Boulder, Colorado 
and intern with one of the co-founders of 
the field that I hoped to be a part of: 
sports sustainability. After working 
throughout the summer on marketing 
strategies for advertising Ralphie’s Green 
Stampede, CU Boulder’s sports 
sustainability program, I was hired on 
part time to work in athletic operations.  
My role included not only being a leader 
in charge of my own project, but also 
getting to work hands-on in athletics and 
seeing the “ins and outs” in game day 
operations. My role is to make sure the 
vendors at our football games comply 
with CU’s zero waste standards. In order 
Dr. Ferguson and Professor Lane 
caught up with ENVS alumni Eric 
Breitenstein ’12 (above) and Ameet 
Pall ’12 (below) as they were 
inducted into Wofford’s Athletic 
Hall of Fame during the home 
football game against Western 
Carolina. Eric teaches 7th grade 
science in Arizona and Ameet is in 
graduate school at McGill University 
for environmental studies.

     The University of Michigan, located in Ann 
Arbor, established the School of Natural Resources 
in 1950.  This was the first program of its kind in the 
world.  In 1992 the name was changed to the School 
of Natural Resources and Environment and now is 
known as the School of Environment and 
Sustainability (SEAS).   
     It offers two master’s degrees, an MS in Natural 
Resources and Environment and an MLA in 
Landscape Architecture.

on the farm. I look forward to the 
new year and my second semester of 
college. Having the opportunity to 
work on the farm has been a great 
stress reliever and healthy way to 
break up my days. It always helps me 
leaving homework and classes behind 
to dig in dirt, harvest local veggies, 
and test my agriculture knowledge -  I 
have learned so much already!

As a freshman finishing up her first 
semester, I am reflecting on the past 
few months working with the Hub 
City Farmer’s Market Urban Farm. 
Having previous experience 
predominantly with tropical 
agriculture, urban agriculture in 
South Carolina has proved to be quite 
an eye opener. Thus far, the urban 
farm crew, Meg Whiteley, Luke 
Lecroix, and I have harvested over 
1735 pounds to date.  
The greenhouse has now been 
installed with an automatic irrigation 
system. We have blueprinted future 
plans to expand the farm, utilizing all 
the land that we can work with. 
Many exciting projects are underway. 
Be on the lookout for new 
installations, a diversity of produce 
and crops, and expansions on the 
farm.  As the year wraps up, we will 
be finishing our yearly reports and 
getting ready for our winter markets. 
I am so excited to continue the work 
Strickland and Lecroix work on 
the irrigation system in the new 
greenhouse.  
The Brewitt family welcomed a baby girl, Lupine Perrin Brewitt 
on Wednesday, November 22nd, 7lb 9oz, 20-inches.

     The University of Delaware’s Center for Energy 
and Environmental Policy (CEEP) was established 
in 1980 and is a leading institution in graduate 
education, research, and energy and environmental 
policy.   
     The lead professor of the program, Dr. John 
Byrne, shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his 
contributions to Working Group III of the 
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change with fellow 
panel authors and review editors.  
     The CEEP offers master and doctoral degrees in 
Energy and Environmental Policy (MEEP and
