Revisiting the 1930s and 40s with Dr. Ferguson 
2
    The presence of buried organic 
deposits and filled ancient valleys 
dated to over 50,000 years ago was 
also discussed. These organic deposits 
document a little known but 
significant chapter in the development 
of the Piedmont landscape that 
challenges conventional thinking 
about its history during the Pleistocene 
epoch (2.6 million years ago to about 
12,000 years ago). These deposits are 
exposed in deep gullies that eroded 
due to agricultural practices following 
European settlement in the region (see 
photo, left).  
     On Saturday and Sunday the 25th 
and 26th, Dr. Ferguson (with the 
assistance of Dr. Savage, Professor 
Lane and Ben Thomas ’16) took 
conference participants to see six field 
localities that had been investigated in 
the 1930s and again during Dr. 
Ferguson’s current research in 
Spartanburg County. Behind-the-
scenes efforts of Mark Olencki and 
Chris Overcarsh, along with awesome 
weather, helped make the conference a 
success.

     The Environmental Studies 
Department sponsored a three-day field 
conference of the Southeastern Friends 
of the Pleistocene entitled, Revisiting the 
forgotten 1930s and early 1940s Piedmont 
research of the Soil Conservation Service: 
landscape erosion, legacy sediments and 
deeply buried organic deposits, February 
24-26.  The conference was attended by 
geologists, geographers, soil scientists, 
botanists, and environmental studies 
professionals, as well as graduate and 
undergraduate students primarily from 
Georgia, North and South Carolina, and 
Virginia.   
     On Friday the 24th, Dr. Ferguson 
presented a lecture on “forgotten” 
research conducted by the U.S. Soil 
Conservation Service into upland soil 
erosion and bottomland sedimentation 
since the mid-1700s. Dr. Ferguson 
investigated library archives in several 
different locations to find the older data.     
Knowing this history of erosion and 
sedimentation is vital to understanding 
past and future human impacts and the 
agricultural potential in this region.

     Monterey Institute of International Studies, 
located in Monterey, California, is affiliated with the 
Graduate School of Middlebury College.  It offers a 
Masters of Arts in International Environmental 
Policy (MAIEP), which focuses on an international 
scope instead of just on U.S. policy issues.  Three 
specialized tracks are offered in Natural Resource 
Policy & Management, Ocean & Coastal Resource 
Management, and Business, Sustainability & 
Development. 
     Along with the core course and elective 
specialization course work, there is also a foreign

language course work requirement.  
     This area of California is home to marine and 
ocean conservation and policy as well as the 
“greentech” revolution and many environmental 
groups and there are opportunities to collaborate 
with many of these environmental institutions.   
     According to their website, “Monterey Institute 
is one of the most environmentally-conscious 
campuses in the country and plans to be a carbon 
neutral campus by 2016.”

past three years he has also been studying wild pigs.

way to kick off our Week of 
Controversial Canines – see you for the 
Coyote Conversation next week. 
 
 
     We invite everyone to join us next 
Thursday as we host two events in 
conjunction with our Week of Controversial 
Canines.   
     At 11:00am in RMSC 121, we welcome 
John Kilgo ’89, a research wildlife biologist 
with the U.S. Forest Service Southern 
Research Station, who will talk about 
“Coyote Research on the Savannah River 
Site.”   
    At 7:00pm in Leonard Auditorium, we 
host the Tyson Family Lecture on the 
Preservation and Restoration of Southern 
Ecosystems. Our speakers, Dan Flores 
(author of Coyote America) and our own 
John Lane ’77 (Coyote Settles the South), 
will discuss one of the most current topics in 
wildlife management, “Coyote: A 
Conversation About One of America’s Most 
Resilient Mammals.”

     Not many people know it, but the 
South, a region apart in this as in so 
much else, has its own wolf. When 
Europeans first reached the region we 
now call the Carolinas, the woods and 
meadows were prowled by Canis rufus, 
the red wolf, an 80-pound canid found in 
the southeastern quadrant of the United 
States and nowhere else. Of course the 
settlers started killing them as fast as 
they could. Eventually the wolf went 
extinct in the wild, but was reintroduced 
in the far east of North Carolina in 1987. 
But it made some enemies, as seems to 
happen to wolves, and now the 40 or so 
wild red wolves are in trouble. 
     We got to hear about it all in Olin 
Theater on Wednesday night when 
Christian Hunt, of the NGO Defenders of 
Wildlife, hosted a documentary, Red Wolf 
Revival, and led a discussion on the wolf. 
The story was fascinating, emotional, 
and scientifically and politically 
complex. Hunt discussed the 
management challenges of wolves, from 
cultural hate to coyote hybridization, 
and had some pretty direct criticism for 
the Fish and Wildlife Service. Students 
had some great questions and were

    This study documents elevated levels of platinum in 
sediments from 11 widely separated archaeological 
sites across North America which all date to around 
12,800 years ago (above). Previous research, 
conducted as a part of the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 
2 (GISP2), reported elevated platinum in ice core 
samples of the same age, at the onset of a 1000-year 
climatic episode known as the Younger Dryas (YD). It 
occurred after temperatures had risen to near present-
day levels near the end of the last ice age, then plunged 
abruptly back to ice age levels. 
   The evidence from both studies supports the 
hypothesis that a cosmic impact, possibly a comet or 
meteorite impact, occurred in northern North America 
introducing a large amount of Pt-rich dust that 
persisted in the atmosphere for a couple of decades.  
The YD impact hypothesis has proposed not only that a 
causal link exists between a cosmic impact event and 
the onset of the YD climate cooling episode, but that 
the impact also caused a peak in continental-scale 
biomass burning, extinction of more than 35 genera of 
North American Pleistocene megafauna, and the 
demise of the Paleoindian Clovis culture.

     The environmental humanities program at The 
University of Utah is a 2-year post baccalaureate 
degree concentrating on the humanities perspective 
and how it intersects with and influences public 
policy, scientific, legal, industrial, and corporate 
concerns.   
     The university offers a unique opportunity to use 
this western landscape for field study and research at 
their Taft-Nicholson Center in Salt Lake City.  Their 
mission is to bridge the arts and humanities with the 
sciences while promoting environmental awareness 
and personal connections in nature.

     Both MA and MS degrees are available. The 
MA requires an approved language component 
and the MS requires three research methods 
courses. 
     The three options for completing this degree 
include a thesis, project, or non-thesis with varying 
requirements for course work hours.

wilderness on the Canadian border, 
many of us have visited Wes Dripps’ 
Shi Center, a shining example of 
what a sustainability center in the 
Upstate can be. 
As they departed, Juan arrived, and 
shared some fascinating research on 
urban climate risks and 
environmental justice. A city’s 
environmental quality varies 
enormously, even from one street to 
another, and dealing with this is an 
increasingly pressing issue in an ever-
more urban nation. 
We look forward to the continuation 
of the sustainability theme next week 
when we welcome Nathaniel Smith 
of the Partnership for Southern 
Equity, from Atlanta. He will speak 
about community sustainability in an 
urban setting on Monday night at 
7pm in Leonard Auditorium. See you

It’s Sustainability Week at Wofford! 
As we seek to build a better, more 
sustainable college, we hosted three 
distinguished guests to add their 
wisdom and experience to our efforts. 
Jack Byrne of Middlebury College, 
Wes Dripps of some school in 
Greenville, and Juan Declet-Barreto, 
from the Union of Concerned 
Scientists spoke to the community – 
students, faculty, staff, and 
Spartanburg – about turning ideas 
into reality.  
Jack and Wes arrived on Monday 
and, while they liked a lot of what we 
are doing, suggested additional 
aspirational ideas for our near future. 
A campus sustainability plan, a 
sustainability director to direct that 
plan, and a physical space in which 
to orchestrate sustainability in all its 
diverse forms, have all been 
important in making Middlebury and 
Furman into the impressive paragons 
of academic sustainability they 
currently are. While most of us have 
Dr. Declet-Barreto enjoyed his tour 
of the Goodall Center and gardens 
on Wednesday afternoon before 
speaking that evening about 
inequitable impacts of climate 
change and their intersections with 
public health risk factors. 
Faculty and staff voiced their thoughts on the culture of sustainability at Wofford during a listening and ideas 
session on Wednesday morning with Byrne, Dripps, and Declet-Barreto in attendance. A listening and ideas session 
was also offered later that day to get feedback on campus sustainability from students.

    There are two areas of graduate study through the 
Rollins School of Public Health at Emory 
University in Atlanta.  A Master of Public Health 
(MPH) focuses on behavioral sciences and health 
education, biostatistics, environmental health, 
global environmental health, epidemiology, global 
epidemiology, health policy, health care 
management, and global health.  And the Master of 
Science in Public Health (MSPH) focuses on some 
of the same fields listed above with an interest 
towards students who have a strong background in

Arts, and Mathematics) and will grow edible plants that will be put back into the

and my definition of self. Through 
this exploration of creative subject 
matter, I also was effectively able to 
explore myself, and what aspects of 
myself I wanted to keep or let “die on 
the vine.” I will forever be grateful for 
this amazing opportunity that 
enabled me to create a body of work 
that resonates with me, and hopefully 
with viewers. Art and earth are 
forever intertwined in my life, and it’s 
been an honor for me to share my 
creative vision with others. 
The Whetsell Fellowship, established in 
2006 by Dr. William O. Whetsell in 
memory of his brother, Dan Whetsell, is 
designed to support and promote the 
visual arts at Wofford College.  It is a 
summer fellowship that allows a Wofford 
student the opportunity to pursue study in 
some aspect of the visual arts under the 
guidance of a mentor to be selected by the 
college. 
 
 Completing my Whetsell Fellowship 
was honestly one of the best 
experiences of my life! I was chosen 
for the summer fellowship to 
complete an original body of work 
under the guidance of a mentor, 
culminating in an exhibition in the 
new Rosalind Sallenger Richardson 
Center for the Arts. My exhibition, 
entitled Dying on the Vine, focused on 
the interconnectedness of art and the 
environment through the utilization 
of abstract, nonrepresentational 
forms. Though they display nuances 
in their form and composition, each 
work utilizes acrylic paint, ink, and 
graphite on canvas paper to emulate 
an iconic image of muscadine grapes 
that I witnessed during an 
Environmental Studies lab during my 
Freshman year. While this body of 
work on one level represents natural 
themes, it also relays the manner in 
which art and the environment have 
both consistently impacted my life

Students in Dr. Telligman’s 
ENVS150 prepared a sustainability 
fair to educate their peers on 
sustainable life style practices.

     UC – Berkeley established the Energy and 
Resources Group (ERG) in 1973.  They offer a 
Master of Science, Master of Arts, and PhD 
programs in Energy and Resources.  From their 
website: “The purpose of the ERG Master’s 
program is to educate the next generation of 
interdisciplinary leaders. Specifically, students are 
taught the range of methods and subjects they 
should be able to understand, advance, and critique 
to address critical issues stemming from the 
interaction of humans and the environment.”   
     Research facilities at ERG offers students the 
opportunity to study technology, development, 
and society; governance challenges; global change 
science; ecological economics; and consumption, 
resource use and equity. The overall curriculum is 
designed to serve students who intend to pursue a 
master’s degree only and students who intend to 
continue on to a PhD.

Southern Icons: A to Z and the Northside Landscape

by professors Singleton and Lane. 
The questions proved lively and 
Rob assured us that defining the 
South is both difficult and 
creatively challenging, but he 
encouraged us all, as William 
Faulkner encouraged as well, to tell 
about it if we can.

     This past Wednesday VMU 
professor, photographer, and Erskine 
Caldwell scholar Rob McDonald 
visited my ENVS 202 class to launch 
our fourth annual Northside "Third 
Landscape" project, an annual way 
of exploring our neighboring 
redevelopment through words and 
images. Rob led us in an informal 
walk through the Northside, along 
with Wofford professor and writer 
George Singleton. We paid particular 
attention to the Magnolia Cemetery, 
on the eastern edge of the 
neighborhood, and Rob reminded us 
how difficult it is to take photos of a 
cemetery since photographing them 
can easily devolve into clichés. 
Before we left the classroom each 
student chose a letter they will use to 
document the Northside through 
image and word. 
     That night Rob presented his 
"Southern Icons: A to Z" 
photography project, the inspiration 
for this project, to an enthusiastic

     Columbia University offers a Masters in Public 
Administration degree in Environmental Science 
and Policy (ESP) through its School of International 
and Public Affairs (SIPA).  Their goal is “to 
cultivate a new profession that manages earth 
systems in ways that will ensure the long-term 
viability of life on our planet.” 
     The MPA-ESP is an intense12-month program 
that was begun in 2002 as a joint effort by SIPA and 
Columbia’s Earth Institute.  
     The program emphasizes practical, science-based

policy and management learning to prepare 
students for leading positions in sustainability. 
Graduates leave with the skills and training to 
address the environmental challenges facing our 
planet.  New York City is a hub for sustainability 
innovation that becomes an extension of the 
classroom.

Borderlands Summer Internship by William West ’18 
Senior William 
West spent his 
summer 
interning with 
Borderlands 
Restoration in 
the landscape of 
Patagonia, 
Arizona. 
literature and years of experience in 
watershed restoration. They taught 
me how Borderlands was making the 
restoration of a landscape that had 
been degraded by years of poor land 
management into its own industry.  
Central to this landscape and its 
restoration is the management of the 
land’s water. With an interest in 
social sciences, I seized upon this 
management and focused my 
internship project on Arizona’s water 
law and policy. Through a variety of 
trips around Arizona and Mexico, I 
was able to observe the law and 
policy I was studying in action at 
urban and agricultural scales. Overall, 
the summer completely exceeded all 
of my expectations, and I encourage 
anyone that is interested to seek more 
information about the opportunity!

Besides offering me an inspiring 
culture and physical landscape to 
explore, my summer internship with 
Borderlands Restoration in 
Patagonia, Arizona allowed me to 
engage my broad interest in the 
environment and to focus this broad 
interest into a specific area of study. 
Working in a greenhouse to grow 
native species, participating in the 
town’s watershed management 
committee, interviewing townspeople 
about their values and the 
environment, practicing permaculture 
on a small farm, visiting conservation 
ranches in Mexico, and learning 
about border issues from locals are 
just a few of the opportunities that 
were afforded me this summer.  
The expertise provided in these fields 
was astounding. My two mentors 
included a world-renowned ecologist 
that worked in the Clinton 
administration and a doctoral 
anthropologist with a master’s in

ENVS 150 lab participated in an 
EPA Stream Habitat Walk to 
screen for severe water quality 
problems and learn about stream 
ecosystems and environmental 
stewardship along the Lawson’s 
Fork Creek at the Cottonwood 
Trail.
