  Random Notes from Our Upper Shoals Preserve

The biggest change over the seasons 
since I stopped keeping a journal is the 
sand that all the high water brought in. 
You can really see it on the trails.  Lots 
and lots of deer prints. 
We saw a small piece of a raccoon’s 
tail, dark yellow and black, down on 
river trail on the way back. (Murphy 
ran the entire way home.) Murphy 
smelled it before I saw it. Hawk kill? 
Coyotes? I look forward to watching 
spring arrive again this year.

Summer Solstice. Walked into the 
preserve midday to check on the two 
guys removing brush at Upper Shoals. 
Doing a good job. Today we begin to 
build the bog bridges. Hot.  
Ripe wild cherries on the ground along 
Trolley Trail. Lots of ticks. 
 
The wettest fall in decades. Sand. Mud. 
The sound of water over stone. Brown 
thrasher nervous in privet. Crows in 
distance. Water is silt-laden from last 
few days of rain. Sun finally out and 
surreal warmth. Like May or June 
warm. 66 degrees just past noon.

Still winter but quite warm. We heard 
frogs last night. Walked to shoals and 
back with Murphy. Met Betsy on her 
way back from power walking. No 
wildlife— flushed a few song birds 
cutting through the bottom. What were 
they? Have to pay closer attention. 
There is one large ephemeral pond in 
the roadway. Watch it for eggs.

American University – MA in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development 
 
 
 
 
 
American University’s MA program in Natural 
Resources and Sustainable Development is a dual-degree 
program with the United Nations-affiliated University for 
Peace in Costa Rica. American University offers an MA 
in International Affairs, and the University for Peace in 
Costa Rica offers an MA in Natural Resources and 
Sustainable Development. This unique program offers 
students the opportunity to learn about environmental 
and development policies from the perspectives of both 
the South and North.  
According to their website the two-year program 
schedule is: “Students spend their first semester at American 
University learning the foundations of sustainable 
development policy both inside the classroom and within the 
Washington, D.C. policy community. They spend the next 
two semesters at the UN-affiliated University for Peace 
studying concrete practices and tracking international efforts 
toward sustainable development. During their summer at 
UPEACE students must complete an internship.  They return 
to AU for their final semester, during which they write a 
substantial research paper, participate in an integrative 
seminar and complete their final courses.”

The Goat Island Boat Club Merit Scholarship Program: The one-year scholarship will be 
awarded in the amount of $2000. Eligible student must be from South Carolina 
enrolled in an institution of higher learning in the state of South Carolina studying 
marine biology, forestry, fisheries, wildlife management, or other related field focused 
on environmental protection of the Santee Cooper lakes and river systems. Stop by

a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF-REU)

Prádanos Presents Postgrowth Imaginaries by Dr. Peter Brewitt

on Dr. Prádanos’ book Postgrowth 
Imaginaries, which you can access for 
free here. 
Dr. Prádanos stoked two reactions in 
me. The first, and simplest, was 
excitement about our new humanist. 
Whoever they might be (and you’ll all 
get to meet the candidates later this fall), 
they will bring a dynamic and original 
perspective like the one we heard last 
night. The second was, of course, some 
deep reflection on growth. At their core, 
people don’t really care about having 
more money. We care about having a 
better life, which we use money to 
provide. Can we build a society where 
prosperity and happiness don’t depend 
on resource depletion, and how? It is 
hard to envision. But one thing is certain 
– we all do and believe things that will 
seem ridiculous or even immoral to our 
grandchildren. Their world, in 2119, 
will be very, very different than ours. 
Perhaps they’ll look back at us and 
shake their heads at how much we cared 
about growth. 
The economy has to grow. If it doesn’t 
grow enough…disaster. Everyone 
knows this.  
Or do they? Last night Wofford 
welcomed Dr. Iñaki Prádanos, an 
environmental humanist from Miami 
University, Ohio. Hosted by Dr. Laura 
Barbas-Rhoden in a packed Olin 
Teaching Theater, Dr. Prádanos 
challenged many of the bedrock 
assumptions of the past few centuries of 
Western economic and political history. 
His subject was postgrowth imaginaries 
and degrowth. He laid out the strains 
and suffering that spring from the focus 
on Gross Domestic Product and 
showed us the impossibility of an 
assumption of constant growth on a 
biophysically limited planet. His 
approach went far beyond the 20th 
century tension between capitalism and 
communism – communism, too bases 
its assumptions on GDP growth. He 
imagines an entirely transformed 
outlook on prosperity and 
sustainability, and a fairer, more 
sustainable world. All of this was based

Ohio State University – Environmental Sciences Graduate Program 
 
The Environmental Sciences Graduate Program 
(ESGP) at Ohio State University emphasizes research 
and applied teaching that will contribute to solving the 
world’s environmental problems. 
ESGP is comprised of many departments within the 
OSU community providing an interdisciplinary 
education across physical, biological, and social 
sciences that deal with environmental issues.   
ESPG students can pursue and obtain either a MS 
degree (thesis or non-thesis) and/or a Ph.D. degree. 
These students can select from four program options: 
general study with no specialization; agroecosystems, 
a whole system approach to sustainable agriculture 
and food systems; climate change science and policy, 
research at both the scientific and policy-making 
level that can bridge the gap between social and 
natural sciences; and water issues, addressing global 
change, water quality and consequences of human 
activities.

ENVS101 class recently visited 
Pacolet River Heritage Preserve – 
a tradition in the course. Below,

GC Waldrep, Bucknell professor, poet, 
labor historian, and eco-reflector, spent 
the week helping initiate what we hope 
will be a national model for Long Term 
Environmental Reflection (LTER) 
programs. He has explored our six 
reflection sites, at the Center and up 
and down the creek, and written poems 
that will soon be posted on our 
webpage. Writer David Taylor visited 
the sites last fall; printmaker Jim Creal 
and writer Latria Graham are also in 
the process of visiting our sites as well. 
The scope of the project is 150 years, 
and we are now entering our tenth year. 
The first ten years documents the 
Center as a reflection site and is 
recorded by many visitors in our 
building’s LTER ledger. We hope, over 
time, that several of our students will 
take the challenge to visit these spots 
and record for imagined readers, over a 
hundred years hence, the sites and 
sounds of Glendale.

Energy Resource Engineering (ERE), Earth System 
Science (ESS), Geological Sciences (GS), and 
Geophysics (GP) are the four departments of study 
in Stanford University’s graduate degree program. 
Also available to study are three interdisciplinary 
programs in Earth Systems, Environment and 
Resources, and the Change Leadership for 
Sustainability. 
Stanford’s School of Earth, Energy and 
Environmental Sciences was established because of 
the Earth Sciences faculty’s growing need to 
explore the Earth’s environmental system thus 
creating the opportunity to form a department that 
could address integrated research topics and 
educate in global environmental processes. Field

with a group in 
the Galápagos. 
 
Work continued during the 
holidays and Interim at the new 
Chandler Center for 
Environmental Studies.  
 
 
 
 
populations are now high enough to breed 
naturally. 
I got to experience the full spectrum of the 
food-chain from the upwelling 
phenomenon. The organisms I saw varied 
from 3 cm (jellyfish) to over 4 m (Giant 
Hammer Head Shark). The power felt 
from the water pushing up in the 
upwelling is the most powerful force of 
nature that I have personally felt, along 
with the unnerving experience of having 
spotted eagle rays swimming in this 
current both above and below me.  
The Galápagos is a unique place with 
phenomenal people and I would 
recommend anyone travel there if given 
the chance. 
Over the past Interim I found myself in 
the Galápagos Archipelago, spending 
most of my time on the island of San 
Cristóbal. My experiences varied from 
seeing the famous giant tortoises to 
exploring lava tunnels to snorkeling 
alongside penguins, hammerhead sharks, 
and sea lions. I stood where Darwin stood 
when he first came to the islands and 
began his studies. I also had the 
opportunity to be immersed into the local 
culture and totally taken in by my host 
family. 
I got to see first-hand the success of 
wildlife conservation, particularly the 
conservation of the 13-remaining species 
of tortoise. Three species are no longer 
being artificially bred after 2020 – their 
Leblond and the landscape of San Cristóbal 
Island in the Galápagos.

American Museum of Natural History – MAT in Earth Sciences 
 
The Richard Gilder Graduate School at the 
American Museum of Natural History in New York 
City is offering a unique opportunity to earn a fully-
funded MAT in Earth Sciences. This teaching 
fellowship will provide coursework to participants 
interested in careers in middle and high school 
STEM education. 
Per their program description – All degree 
candidates will receive free tuition, books, and a 
$30,000 living stipend. In return, candidates commit 
to teaching in a high-needs school for four years 
upon completion of the year-long (June-August) 
program.  
The upcoming cohort will receive a $10,000 salary 
supplement per year while they complete their 
four-year teaching commitment. 
Applications are being accepted until February 15, 
2020 and prospective students are encouraged to 
attend an on-site information session or speak with 
a faculty member to discuss the program. Visit

Rarotongan school children, and have 
my life turned completely upside down 
in the best possible ways. It’s so hard to 
encompass just how impactful my 
semester in Christchurch was in such a 
short piece but know that I don’t think 
I’ll go a single day in my life where my 
experiences abroad don’t play a role in 
how I interact with this world. So 
please, if you want to hear more about 
New Zealand just ask me! I’d love to 
talk your ear off about it.  
 
I studied abroad in Christchurch, New 
Zealand. Typing that doesn’t make it 
seem any more real. In some ways, I 
put off writing this because it felt too 
much like I was officially shutting the 
door on that chapter in my life. But 
I’ve been back from New Zealand 
since July 2nd and I’m still carrying 
pieces of that time with me wherever I 
go. Some of those pieces are physical 
(like the tattoo I got of Aoraki/Mt. 
Cook or my pounamu necklace), but 
most are just memories. I wasn’t 
expecting to be stretched in so many 
ways while I was abroad. I was 
navigating the ins and outs of life in a 
new country and spending a lot of time 
feeling small and insignificant against 
the backdrop of such a magnificent 
landscape. I got to go tramping for 
three days, hear the thunderous 
cracking of glaciers that were melting 
and shifting, smell the sulfur of 
Rotorua’s geothermal features, 
examine the relationship between algae

College of Charleston – Master of Environmental & Sustainability Studies 
 
 
 
The Master of Environmental and Sustainability 
Studies program at College of Charleston is an 
interdisciplinary graduate level study focused on 
policy and science. 
Several of our Wofford ENVS alumni are attending 
and/or have graduated from this MES program, 
which includes six academic departments: biology, 
geology and environmental geosciences, 
mathematics, physics and astronomy, political 
science, and economics.  It is also supported by 
other faculty and outside institutions and agencies.      
MES offers a dual degree program with a Master 
of Public Administration focusing on sustainability 
issues.  The Peace Corp Master’s International 
allows the opportunity to combine working 
overseas with a master’s degree. 
In the two-year program, students select their 
program of study and have the opportunity to 
create their own areas of specialization.
