They say teaching is the best way to learn, 
and having been teaching online since 
September, I’ve learned a few things: 
- When you teach an 8:30, your class may be 
interrupted by a roommate snoring. 
- Teaching about the tragedy of the commons beside 
an actual common unlocks a more intense level of 
ENVS social science dorkdom than any previously 
reached. 
-If you mention Harry Potter during lecture, your 
first-grader will drop what she’s doing and try to 
join the class. 
-If it gets cold enough, your laptop will make like a 
Hilton Head retiree, decide New England winters 
are too much, and go south. 
-Along similar lines, two college classes plus one 
first grade class divided by one modem equal 
collapse. 
-At the end of class, there’s a little goodbye wave 
people only do on Zoom. 
- On a good day, the imaginary space behind the 
screen can become an island of almost-normal, and 
while the body might be in a car, in a library 
parking lot, in Vermont, the mind is back at 
Wofford, just like it should be.  
I’m grateful to keep teaching. See you all as

Dispatches from Fort Brorby; or, How to 
Stay Alive During The Plague: 
Day 1: The Ginger arrives from a territory known 
as New York (Yankeeland) and is devoured by 
chiggers, humidity, and pimento cheese. 
Day 8: While perusing the South Carolina DNR 
website, The Ginger learns that there’s been 
another new arrival in this territory called the 
black-and-white tegu. As he looks at the pictures he 
swears he will be eaten by one of these cousins of 
the Komodo dragon. 
Day 37: The Ginger’s belongings finally arrive 
from Yankeeland after being swindled by a moving 
company for five weeks (he can now make his 
signature dish: pork tenderloin with hoisin sherry 
sauce). 
Day 52: The chigger itching finally stops. 
Day 72: His students challenge him to go beyond 
his realm of training (creative writing) into fields of 
sociology, history, philosophy, religion, TikTok, 
but The Ginger keeps them on their toes with his 
expertise of all things Ke$ha (you best be preparing 
for her birthday on March 1!). 
Day 89: The Ginger’s wifi is never reliable for 
teaching. 
Day 97: Since he never leaves Fort Brorby, The 
Ginger thinks, “What’s the use of showering every 
day and not wearing pajamas?”

New York University – MA in Environmental Conservation Education 
NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, 
and Human Development offers a MA in 
Environmental Conservation Education.  Students 
study environmental education, environmental 
thought, environmental politics, and ecology and 
can choose from a wide range of electives such as 
environmental policy, environmental history, 
economics, biology and education.   
NYU’s urban experience offers students the 
opportunity to intern with well-known organizations 
such as the Audubon Society, Department of 
Environmental Protection, and the United Nations.             
Also, the program offers the opportunity to take 
classes within NYU’s Steinhardt’s Science 
Education program and the Wallerstein 
Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education 
and the Wagner Graduate School of Public 
Service. 
The program is ideally suited for those who have a 
demonstrated interest in environmental issues

Furthering the Environmental Humanities in a Pandemic

repository of Open Access teaching 
resources for the environmental 
humanities. 
Being an officer during a pandemic has 
meant an opportunity to co-create new 
endeavors. Together with the managing 
director and executive council, as Co-
Presidents, we’ve worked to elevate 
public environmental humanities work. 
We began 2021 with Public Writing & 
Civic Engagement virtual workshops to 
further members’ work in and with 
communities. Our Spotlight series 
launches in March and features new 
creative, critical, and publicly engaged 
work by members. And in July, we’ll 
host a virtual conference on the theme 
of EmergencE/Y, a timely and 
compelling topic as we imagine and 
foster more just and sustainable futures 
together. We hope you’re doing that, 
too, in whatever community you call 
yours! 
 
Dr. Barbas Rhoden is a professor of Modern, 
Languages, and Literatures at Wofford, and 
ASLE Co-President (2020-21) 
 
 
Where do you gather for animated 
conversations, laughter, and learning? 
For many of us in academia and 
creative endeavors, our professional 
organizations offer a place for dialogue 
and camaraderie. The Association for 
the Study of Literature and the 
Environment (ASLE) has been my 
primary professional organization, and 
I’m lucky to help sustain its work as 
Co-President with Dr. Bethany Wiggin, 
founding director of the Penn Program 
in Environmental Humanities. 
What is ASLE and what does it do? 
ASLE is a professional organization 
that seeks “to inspire and promote 
intellectual work in the environmental 
humanities and arts.” Founded in 1992, 
ASLE hosts biennial conferences, 
including the 2007 conference at 
Wofford College, which was my first 
ASLE conference. ASLE also has 
special interest groups; a premiere 
journal; international affiliates; and a 
mentorship program for graduate 
students and early career professionals. 
We award translation and subvention 
grants, book awards and graduate

Johns Hopkins University – MA in Environmental Sciences & Policy 
The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns 
Hopkins has a graduate program in Environmental 
Sciences and Policy that covers a broad position 
centered at the juncture between science and policy. 
Graduates of the program emerge with a 
combination of expertise in science and policy that 
enables them to assume key positions in public and 
private entities responsible for safeguarding our 
environmental future. 
The program offers a flexible curriculum that allows 
students to tailor their academic experience to suit 
their personal needs and interests.      
Core coursework includes ecosystem science and 
management, maritime law, land and water 
conservation, air quality management, oceanic 
stewardship, energy and carbon policy, and 
geographic information systems (GIS).  In 
addition, students may identify a concentration in

would need and proceeded to run 
statistical tests on this data to find a 
relationship between the larval fish 
abundance and the ratio of dead Brandt’s 
strandings to living Brandt’s spotted. 
While it was found that Northern Anchovy 
appear to play the largest role in Brandt’s 
Cormorant mortality, the project is 
ongoing and will continue to run statistical 
test and time series analyses going 
forward. There is also a plan in place to 
create an online interactive data 
visualization.

Nicholas spent the summer working at 
the Scripps Institution of Oceanography 
at UC San Diego as a part of the Brice 
Semmens Lab. This lab focusses on 
fishery ecology along with other marine 
ecology related projects. Nicholas was 
given the choice of what to study for 
the summer and after discussion with 
Dr. Semmens and Dr. Erin 
Satterthwaite from California Oceanic 
Fisheries Investigations, he decided to 
study the impact of larval fish 
abundance on Brandt’s Cormorant 
mortality along the California coast. 
While there was a field aspect of 
participating in beach surveys to find 
stranded birds and mammals, most of 
his work took place with R Statistical 
Software.  
Nicholas began his work by reading 
numerous papers on Brandt’s 
Cormorant diet and the impact of that 
diet. He then spent time cleaning and 
wrangling thousands of data entries 
down to the exact information that he 
Jacobs spent the summer studying 
the impact of larval fish abundance 
on Brandt’s Cormorant mortality 
along the California coast.

University of Miami – Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science 
Located on Virginia Key, Florida, the Rosenstiel 
School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) 
was begun in the 1940’s and has grown to become 
one of the leading academic oceanographic and 
atmospheric research institutions in the world.  
The 65-acre campus encompasses a marine research 
and educational park, along with two NOAA 
laboratories and a marine and science technology 
high school. 
The Master of Professional Science Program (MPS) 
is for students seeking advanced training in marine 
and atmospheric science.  MPS offers areas of 
study in Applied Marine Physics, Marine Affairs 
and Policy, Marine Biology and Fisheries, Marine 
and Atmospheric Chemistry, Marine Geology and 
Geophysics, or Meteorology and Physical 
Oceanography.  MPS is a professional degree 
rather than a traditional, research-based MS degree 
and is geared toward those students who seek

A Will to Preach
The Rev. Dr. Will Willimon ’68 is well known for delivering memorable sermons. A new
documentary will provide an inside look at how Willimon gets from idea to the polished final
product.
“A Will to Preach” is scheduled to air on SCETV at 9:30 tonight. “A Conversation with Will
Willimon,” a 30-minute interview, will follow at 10 p.m.
Susie Films, a Davidson, North Carolina-based company, produced the documentary.
Willimon, professor of the practice of Christian ministry at the Duke University Divinity School,
said it was “weird” trying to conduct business as usual with a film crew in tow.
“In the opening shot I enter a Duke classroom saying, ‘As you know, I always have a film
crew follow me through the day,’” Willimon says. The videographers “were a group of
seasoned professionals who made it seem a bit less weird,” he adds.
The documentary follows Willimon through his process for building a sermon – from reading
scripture and commentaries, to conversations – and then delivering it at St. Luke’s Episcopal
Church in Salisbury, North Carolina. It includes interviews with family, friends and colleagues,
as well as clips from previous sermons.

Terriers enter SoCon Baseball Tournament as the No. 1
seed
The Terriers enter the 2021 Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed after
clinching the regular season championship with a shutout win in the final game of the season.
It is the first regular season title for Wofford since joining the league in 1998 and the first time
with the No. 1 seed. Wofford will face No. 4 seed Western Carolina in the opening game at

The Terriers took three top Southern Conference honors. Outfielder Colin Davis ’21, a finance
major from Roswell, Georgia, was named Player of the Year; Elliot Carney ’21, a finance
major from Sammamish, Washington, was named Pitcher of the Year; and Todd Interdonato

Wofford’s Fallen
Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember the women and men who made the ultimate
sacrifice for the United States while serving in the armed forces. Wofford College has 102
alumni who died in battle dating back to World War I.
Learn more about how the college remembered those killed in battle and watch a video
with Wofford ROTC reading the names of the college’s fallen soldiers.

All Saints
Wofford held its annual “All Saints Remembrance Tolling of the Bell” ceremony on Nov. 1.
The Wofford College bell tolls for each of the college’s graduates three times in their lives. It
tolls to welcome each first-year student during their first week on campus. It tolls to celebrate
their graduation. Finally, it tolls on All Saints’ Day after their death.
The college held its annual “All Saints Remembrance Tolling of the Bell” ceremony on Nov.
1. The names of students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends of the college who have died
during the past year were read.
The Rev. Dr. Ron Robinson, the college’s Perkins-Prothro Chaplain and Professor of
Religion, shared a familiar reminder to those attending the ceremony: “What matters is how
we live between the tolls.”
The bell tolled 150 times.

‘Paper Bullets’
Historian, author Jeffrey Jackson to discuss book that’s receiving high praise
Jeffrey Jackson simply describes his latest book as “a World War II story you’ve never heard
before.” It’s a story that’s being heralded for how it documents courage and inspires. It’s
about love. It’s also an example of empathy.
“Paper Bullets” offers a ground-level view of history through the story of Lucy Schwob and
Suzanne Malherbe. They were avant-garde artists, stepsisters and lesbian partners who
risked their lives while defying the Nazis.
Schwob and Malherbe have gained attention over the past two decades as their art has
received recognition. Jackson says they were known Nazi resistors, but the full extent of their
story hadn’t been told.
“No one did a deep dive,” says Jackson, an author, historian and professor of history at
Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. “No one had written anything substantial about
their wartime activity.”
Jackson is going to discuss the book with Wofford College students and others participating
in a Zoom discussion at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 8. Register here. The event is being

Revolve
“Revolve” is a ceramic artwork that can be found in the stunning seminar room overlooking the college’s
academic commons in the Chandler Center for Environmental Studies. It reflects the fragile beauty of
coral reefs.
My Modern Met website has a profile on Courtney Mattison, the ceramist from Los
Angeles, California, who was commissioned to create the piece, which is installed in the
Chandler Center for Environmental Studies. The artwork has about 250 ceramic pieces that
highlight the fragile beauty of coral reefs. Mattison creates intricately detailed and large-scale
ceramic sculptural works that are focused on raising awareness for protecting the planet.
The project received support from the MacGregor Ruffin Art Project Fund, which was
established in memory of MacGregor Ruffin, an environmental studies major who died in
2016.
