    Rethinking the Narrative of Turkey’s July 15 Events: An Intelligence Operation Disguised as a Coup Attempt

    Academia, think tanks, and international media have largely adopted the Turkish government’s narrative that the events of July 15, 2016, constituted a failed coup attempt. This dominant framing has shaped policy responses and scholarly interpretations despite the authoritarian context in which it was crafted. Many Turkish and Western scholars accepted the Turkish government’s narrative that the July 15 events were a failed coup attempt. They often rely on surface-level indicators and official statements without critically engaging with available evidence. Also, they disregarded substantial evidence and defendants’ statements in judicial proceedings that directly contradict official statements. One notable exception to this widespread acceptance of the government’s narrative is Jonathan Powell’s analysis in the Washington Post’s Monkey Cage blog, which challenged the standard framing and raised concerns regarding the peculiarities. However, most scholars and commentators—including many Turkish academics—have largely accepted the official version. This prevailing consensus, despite isolated dissenting voices, underscores the need for a more critical reassessment. Such uncritical adoption of an official narrative raises a fundamental question: should we take the word of an increasingly authoritarian regime at its face value, especially in interpreting high-stakes national security incidents? Turkey in 2016 was already well on its way to dismantling rule-of-law institutions, and accepting its account of July 15 without rigorous empirical scrutiny has had dangerous consequences.     Engineering Clean Water: Pure Water Project

    After earthquakes devastated Haiti in 2010, a team of Embry-Riddle students and faculty built and installed a solar-powered water purifier to improve both the environmental and human health concerns created by the lack of infrastructure, clean water, and sanitation. Since then, the group Pure Water Project has installed 10 water purifiers in orphanages, clinics, schools, and community centers in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The group relies on its partner selection criteria and local contacts to determine the best locations for the purifiers. Once determined, teams of students (Mechanical, Electrical, and WASH) construct the purifiers in ERAU’s Energy Systems Laboratory. In May, Pure Water Project students and faculty installed the purifier to accomplish the group’s overall goal: to use engineering principles to provide clean water to areas in need. A final component of the project is to launch a micro-business on-site. The local operators are empowered with ongoing maintenance and operation of the system, as well as the micro-business operations

    The expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) has intensified global energy consumption and revealed substantial water requirements associated with data center operations. The deployment of large-scale AI models requires extensive electrical power and cooling infrastructure, resulting in significant carbon emissions and freshwater consumption when supported by fossil fuel–based energy grids. Addressing these challenges requires sustainable, low-carbon, and water-efficient energy sources that can support continuous high-density computing. The proposed research examines nuclear power as a mitigation strategy for the environmental impacts of AI by analyzing its potential to supply stable, carbon-free electricity with reduced water use. Meta’s $750 million data center in Newton County, Georgia, reportedly uses about 500,000 gallons of water daily, accounting for roughly 10% of the county’s supply, contributing to well depletion and reduced water pressure. In contrast, Microsoft has entered a 20-year power-purchase agreement to supply its data-center operations using electricity from the planned restart of the Three Mile Island Unit 1 nuclear generating station. This is expected to deliver 835MW of carbon-free baseload power by 2028. AI’s environmental footprint may be reduced by providing stable, carbon-free electricity with reduced lifecycle water intensity. Lifecycle analyses demonstrate that nuclear generation exhibits lower operational water withdrawal and consumption rates than most thermoelectric alternatives. However, few studies have quantified or compared the lifecycle water intensity and carbon performance of AI data centers powered by nuclear versus conventional sources. Future research should focus on site-specific water accounting, techno-economic modeling of SMR–data-center co-location, and regulatory frameworks to guide sustainable AI energy strategies

    Advancing Environmental Monitoring at Verde River Headwaters State Park through Integrated Remote Sensing Technologies

    The establishment of Verde River Headwaters State Park in Chino Valley, Arizona, marks a significant conservation milestone with the acquisition of 734 acres of the historic Del Rio Springs Ranch by the Trust for Public Land in March 2024. Now under the stewardship of Arizona State Parks & Trails (ASPT), this site encompasses Sullivan Lake, Del Rio Springs, critical riparian habitats, and historically significant landmarks including the 1863 Arizona territorial capital and 1920s Fred Harvey Farm structures. This initiative yields substantial benefits, including annual water savings within the Prescott Active Management Area, the extension of the Peavine National Recreation Trail, and ecosystem restoration. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) has partnered with ASPT to employ advanced remote sensing technology to advance environmental monitoring. Preliminary analysis of 2018 airborne LiDAR acquisitions over approximately 400 acres have generated precise datasets on vegetation height, streamline delineation, and topography, informing park planning, hydrological modeling, and vegetation structure assessment. Future efforts will integrate Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS)-based LiDAR and multispectral imagery as well as radar observations from NASA and ISRO’s newly launched NISAR satellite, and onsite ecological assessments, including xylem flux measurements on mature riparian trees. This rigorous and interdisciplinary collaboration comprising ERAU faculty and students, ASPT representatives, experts from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and ecological and UAS expertise, aims to develop a robust, scalable basis for surface water management and ecosystem analysis. Additionally, planned cross-platform comparisons will provide the science team with sensor tradeoffs and enhance the validation and accuracy of existing and future remote sensing systems and products

    Aircraft-Originating Metal Deposits in Near-Airport Environments and Associated Environmental and Health Outcomes

    Aviation gasoline, or Avgas, is an aviation fuel used primarily for piston-engine aircraft such as small trainer aircraft (i.e., Cessna Skyhawks). When combusted, avgas releases a deluge of heavy metals which settle in the surrounding environment. Lead, bromine, chlorine, and various trace metals are dispersed into soil, water, and living organisms in high concentrations surrounding airports. By comparing manufacturer emissions reports, airport air-quality studies, and environmental studies surrounding airports and areas of high air traffic, a comprehensive environmental profile of the areas surrounding airports can be characterized; water quality, organism health outcomes, and soil quality can be compared to neighboring ecological zones lacking heavy air traffic in order to showcase the negative effects of concentrated, consistent heavy metal dispersal over natural areas. Potential solutions, including filtering and new engine technologies, will be explored. Health outcomes, especially regarding humans, is of particular concern for populations living in close proximity to, or working at, airports, and mitigation systems will aid in improving quality-of-life for people who are affected by heavy metal dispersal

    Community gardens provide a place where locals can gather, work with their hands, learn new things, and service their community. In places with sandy, acidic soil and a high food insecure population, like here in Central Florida, they also provide infrastructure to cultivate healthier soil and grow nutritious produce abundantly which can be distributed to those in need. Despite the overwhelming benefits of integrating gardens into our communities, very few are still running due to a high price tag and the hours of labor and maintenance involved. Through interviews of the Master Gardeners, a blueprint of the most efficient and cost-effective processes will be documented and filed for future gardens to reference. Master Gardeners from community gardens all over Volusia and Orange County were interviewed via Outlook on the many aspects involved in creating and maintaining a community garden. This involves how the location was chosen, how the land was bought/donated, materials/labor procurement, how funds were raised, how leadership and other internal structures were set up, community involvement, etc. The final report includes the best garden layouts, where to buy materials/labor, best ways to reduce energy usage, sources to find grants/funding in Central Florida, contacts of other community gardens, how to involve the community, and so much more. Having such a blueprint creates a better opportunity for more gardens to begin and flourish, providing our communities with more places to come together and more direct access to fresh produce

    Food insecurity undermines health, dignity, and opportunity. It disproportionately affects U.S. military veterans, especially those in rural communities. Access to nutritious food is tied to poorer physical, cognitive, and mental health, yet stigma can conceal need and deter help-seeking. Existing supports include federal nutrition benefits, Veterans Health Administration screening and referrals, food pantries, and nonprofit initiatives, which provide essential relief but are fragmented and often complex to navigate. Transportation barriers, limited clinical capacity, and confusing eligibility pathways further erode access and continuity of care. This study synthesizes evidence on veteran food insecurity and highlights sustainable, community-based solutions. It promotes practical pathways that pair immediate assistance with long-term resilience. Veteran-focused sustainable agriculture and gardening programs help ensure a steady supply of fresh food while addressing broader social elements by connecting individuals to other members of the community. Teaching kitchens and nutrition counseling turn access into healthier daily habits. Coordinated government, nonprofit, and community partnerships can streamline enrollment, deliver services to rural veterans, and leverage peer networks to reduce stigma. A phased implementation plan emphasizing local tailoring, mobile and digital outreach, and continuous evaluation to align resources with real-world barriers is crucial. Integrating food security with mental health support, transportation assistance, and economic stabilization can measurably improve veteran well-being. By advancing sustainable farming and gardening alongside coordinated clinical and community action, stakeholders can move beyond short-term aid toward durable, dignified food access for those who served
