    Determining if situational awareness can transfer to new domains

    The accident rates attributed to human factors are high in general aviation (GA), and situational awareness (SA) is crucial to flight safety as a subset of human factors. The SA is the skills to perceive, comprehend, and project information in dynamic environments, which enables effective decision-making. However, the accidents resulting from decision-making processes in GA are a primary cause of aviation accidents. Thus, the hypothesis is to determine if SA in driving or flying can predict SA in a new domain, which can benefit novice pilots\u27 SA training program. Specifically, The Letter Factory (LF) test is employed as a new domain in this study, which is the program to test an individual’s SA and was utilized for selecting the air traffic controller by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This study was conducted by 40 samples enrolled in the aeronautical science program or flight instructors employed by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Several correlations were performed to test hypotheses, but no significant correlations were identified in this research design. Future studies on the transferability of SA to new domains should be addressed to broaden SA\u27s insight through carefully designed studies, which can advance aviation safety

    Impacts of Changing Beach and Dune Configurations on Coastal Wildlife and Communities: A Case Study along the Coast of East Central Florida

    Barrier islands along Florida’s Atlantic coast serve as critical buffers against storm surges and erosion while supporting diverse coastal ecosystems. However, changes in geomorphology from intensified hurricanes, increased development, etc., alter beach and dune configurations, threatening both natural habitats and coastal infrastructure. This research examines the changes in barrier islands along Florida\u27s East Coast, focusing on the impacts of beach and dune configurations on coastal habitat between Ponce Inlet and St. Augustine Inlet. The study aims to analyze changes in dune vegetation, shoreline types (natural vs. armored), and elevation profiles from 2014-2024 using high-resolution satellite imagery and LiDAR elevation data. Additionally, ten years of sea turtle nesting and shorebird data were incorporated in the spatial and quantitative analyses, using Nesting Beach Surveys from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and research-grade Birding Activity data from eBird. Public perceptions of coastal resilience, were also incorporated, previously collected through community surveys during living seawall stakeholder workshops in November 2024 and analyzed using Chi-Square tests. The study results aim to enhance understanding of how a dynamic, changing coast affects community resiliency and the habitat stability of sea turtle nesting and shorebird foraging zones. The findings also broaden scientific understanding, support decision-making, and guide regional stakeholders in mitigating disaster impacts while preserving marine biodiversity and community welfare

    What’s on our shores? A study of marine debris and cigarette litter concentrations in Daytona Beach, FL.

    Marine debris, defined by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is any persistent, artificial, or processed solid material discarded into the marine and coastal environment. This growing global issue poses significant threats to marine life, coastal ecosystems, and human health. The present study aimed to assess the amount and types of marine debris, with an emphasis on cigarette butts, at two public beaches in Daytona Beach, Florida, a highly urbanized and heavily visited tourist location. Field surveys were conducted from April through July 2025 at the oceanfront beaches of Sunsplash Park and Main Street Pier using transect-based NOAA Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project (MDMAP) protocols to collect, weigh, and categorize debris. The data were analyzed to compare sites and evaluate the impact of public holidays and tourism activity. Results indicated that cigarette butts were the most abundant form of litter, followed by plastics and food-related packaging. Sunsplash Park consistently exhibited higher debris loads, with notable spikes after weekends and holidays. For example, following the Independence Day weekend (July 7), the debris weight at Sunsplash Park reached 169.3 g, more than twice that recorded at Main Street Pier (78.9 g). Cigarette butts, although small in size, contain toxic compounds such as nicotine, arsenic, and lead, which leach into the environment and persist due to resistance to biodegradation. Their prevalence emphasizes the need to implement targeted mitigation strategies. Preventive measures, such as installing cigarette receptacles, designating smoke-free zones, and launching community awareness programs, are recommended. This work emphasizes the importance of local monitoring and county partnerships to strengthen and give importance to and contribute to a vast marine debris reduction effort
