Widespread Expansion Of Salt Marsh Pools Observed On Maine Marshes Since 2009 (Data Files)
Salt marshes contain standing water, which we refer to here as pools. We manually digitized salt marsh pools on 12 salt marshes in Maine (given as Name and corresponding ID number (see ID in Attributes)) in 2009 and 2021: Scarborough (1), Webhannet (2), Spurwink (3), Marshall Point (4), York River (5), Ogunquit (6), Brave Boat Harbor (7), Cousins River (8), Biddeford Pool (9), Little River (10), Goosefare Brook (11), Gooch’s Beach (12). Marsh extents were delineated with the Maine Natural Areas Program Current Tidal Marshes layer. All pools were digitized at a scale of 1:400 to 1:1000. Features were digitized using National Agricultural Imaging Program (NAIP) aerial imagery from 2009 and 2021. The spatial resolution of the aerial photos is 1 m for 2009 and 0.6 m for 2021. For more NAIP imagery metadata such as imagery ID and tide information, see included Supplementary_table.xlsx. There were 10,566 pools in 2009 and 14,156 pools in 2021. These layers were created to document changes in salt marsh pools from 2009 to 2021: ‘2009_Pools_Not_Georectified’ (24,992 KB) is the original 2009 pool layer in which pool polygons align with the 2009 NAIP imagery. ‘2009_Pools_Georectified’ (27,936 KB) includes pool polygons moved to correctly overlap with their 2021 counterparts (affected less than 850 pools which were all less than 5 m wide). Note, this means that the pool location is inconsistent with imagery and should only be used to spatially join attributes. ‘2021_Pools’ (35,252 KB) contains all pool polygons in 2021
Staff and Provider Perspectives on a Low-Barrier Buprenorphine Program in Portland, Maine
Homelessness and opioid use disorder are at the forefront of public health issues in Maine. Substance use accounts for a higher proportion of deaths among those experiencing homelessness than it does in the overall population. In 2022, Maine ranked third in the U.S. for fatal overdoses involving opioids. The clinic at the center of this evaluation is a low-barrier buprenorphine bridge program serving people experiencing homelessness that provides same-day prescriptions and other supports, while connecting patients to ongoing care for substance use disorder.
This was a qualitative program evaluation that used semi-structured key informant interviews. The evaluation focused on assessing internal processes, attitudes and beliefs of employees, and relationships with partner organizations. Participants were included if they are current employees at the clinic or a partner organization. Interviews were conducted via Zoom and recorded. Interviews were coded in Excel using in-vivo coding. Codes were categorized using a color-coding system. Themes were assessed based on codes and categories.https://dune.une.edu/ph_ile/1007/thumbnail.jp
Exploring The Lived Experience Of Former Special Educators In The Greater Toronto Area And Their Perceptions Of Work Conditions In The Special Education Classroom
The purpose of this qualitative interpretive phenomenological analysis was (a) to explore the lived experiences of public Kindergarten–Grade 8 (K–8) special educators in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) who left the field of special education and (b) to understand challenges caused by their work conditions. The research questions were (a) “How do former public K–8 special educators in the GTA describe their lived experience within their special education classroom and the role of work their conditions in their decision to leave the field?” (b) “How do former public K–8 special educators in the GTA in the field of special education describe the role of pedagogical practices of planning and instruction in their decision to leave the field?” and (c) “How do prior public K–8 special educators in the GTA describe their perception of supports and barriers in their decision leave the field?” The affective event theory was the theoretical framework and personal interest with a succinct review of research provided the conceptual framework. Semistructured one-on-one interviews gathered data from eight participants. The emergent themes included (a) misalignment of preparation and the classroom experience of special educators, (b) complexities of role pressures as perceived by special educators, (c) contextual factors influencing pedagogical practice, and (d) emotional depletion as understood by special educators. The findings included role pressures in the work conditions of a special education classroom are because of unpreparedness, workload, and isolation. A lack of direction and resources, in addition to inadequate preparation training emphasized a disconnect between policy and practice
Multidisciplinary Approach: Postpartum Menorrhagia, Depression & Homelessness
Taking a multidisciplinary approach to addressing patient needs creates an opportunity to address the source of a patient\u27s symptoms, while providing an emotionally safe space for the patient to feel seen. This case demonstrates a potential approach for providing medical, dental, and mental healthcare to a patient experiencing deficits in multiple aspects of the social determinants of health. Taking time to listen to the patient\u27s social needs and goals and including the patient in determining the course of treatment will assist in addressing current basic needs, while educating and empowering the patient moving forward.https://dune.une.edu/caiepfall2024/1006/thumbnail.jp

Teachers’ Experiences And Perceptions Of Equity-Oriented Practices In K-5 Literacy Instruction
The Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) included requirements and supports to advance equity and excellence for all students, including those historically underserved in education. However, data available from the Maine Department of Education (2021) signaled an evident achievement gap. The Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) required equity strategies and evidence-based interventions to improve and encourage schools, educators, and leaders to determine which data-driven approaches best meet school and student needs. Effective equity-oriented practices in the literacy classroom included group work, centering student voice, student-centered instruction, and implementing grade-level materials (Lazar, 2022; Williamson, 2017). Still, little information was available exploring the experiences of teachers as they used these practices in their literacy instruction. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore and understand equity-oriented practices used in literacy instruction in-service by public K-5 elementary teachers in a large metropolitan school district in Maine. Interviews with six public in-service Grades K-5 elementary school teachers revealed how to better support teachers as they worked with students to close the opportunity gap and the subsequent achievement gap. The experiences of participants led to themes that included (a) district initiatives, (b) necessary enhancements, and (c) the needs of educators. The research revealed two types of teachers. The first type of teacher described being confident implementing equity-oriented practices and therefore hopeful that their students would achieve at grade-level. The second type of teacher described uncertainty in their use of equity-oriented practices and their distrust toward the new curriculum

Beyond Clean Teeth: Dental Hygiene’s Role In HPV Prevention And Advocacy
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection linked to oropharyngeal and cervical cancers, particularly through HPV16. While the HPV vaccine has proven effective in reducing cancer and genital warts, its uptake remains limited due to low public and professional awareness. Dental hygienists, with their focus on preventive care, can play a key role in promoting HPV vaccination. This literature review explores how increased HPV education for hygienists can improve patient outcomes. By advocating for vaccination, providing patient education, offering guidance, and possibly administering the vaccine in dental offices, hygienists could significantly help reduce HPV-related cancers. However, challenges remain, including a lack of confidence and training in discussing HPV with patients. Addressing these barriers through targeted education and policy changes would empower dental hygienists to actively contribute to HPV prevention, ultimately reducing HPV-related cancers.https://dune.une.edu/dh_studpost/1023/thumbnail.jp
The Periodontal Puzzle: Piecing Together The Lupus Connection With Oral Health
The connection of periodontal disease and systemic erythematous lupus connects a multitude of inflammation symptoms. The body is plagued with consistent states of inflammation due to the autoimmune defense against the body\u27s healthy tissues. This coincides with the inflammatory response produced by periodontal diseases. Studies indicate a strong correlation between the presence of periodontal disease in individuals suffering from SLE. Those with lupus are more likely to also have a greater incidence of oral characteristics that contribute to periodontal disease. Individuals with SLE have an increased risk of developing periodontal diseases and associated characteristics; however, those suffering from said oral complications can maintain periodontal health with increased preventative care and adequate home care. The exacerbated host response causes an abnormal prevalence of chronic inflammation in the periodontium, triggering a more significant immune response and causing irreversible tissue destruction, resulting in greater susceptibility to disease and infection.https://dune.une.edu/dh_studpost/1026/thumbnail.jp
