Developing professional and empathetic skills in Telehealth
This presentation reflects on a collaborative case study where students from Dentistry, Osteopathic Medicine, Allopathic Medicine, Social Work, and Dietetics engaged in a multi-disciplinary approach to deliver patient-centered care. Working together to create a wrap-around care plan for our Telehealth pediatric patient, Charlotte Sodo, we navigated the balance between applying our field-specific expertise and integrating empathy, motivational interviewing, and attention to social determinants of healthhttps://dune.une.edu/caiepfall2024/1007/thumbnail.jp
Educator Perceptions Of Social-Emotional Learning Embedded In Academic Instruction
This qualitative exploratory case study examined the results of the CASEL (2021) School-based Staff Survey on SEL Implementation and individual semi-structured interviews with six teachers and three staff members regarding social-emotional learning (SEL) at the secondary school level. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore how secondary teachers and staff at a mid-size public, suburban high school in Connecticut perceive the implementation of the RULER SEL (Brackett et al., 2019) program. There were four themes that emerged from the data: becoming a warm demander (Hammond, 2015), adapting RULER SEL tools, RULER SEL and future impact, and the need for increased individual support. The first theme included the subtheme of building dynamic relationships with students. The second theme included the subtheme of professional development. Based on the findings three recommendations were made. First, schools should provide professional development opportunities for teachers and staff focused on adopting a warm demander (Hammond, 2015) approach in the classroom. Second, longitudinal studies were recommended to evaluate the long-term impact of RULER SEL (Brackett et al., 2019) on student outcomes, well-being, and academic achievement. Third, collaborating with other schools, SEL experts, and community organizations was recommended to allow educators to share resources, and successful practices related to SEL implementation. Recommendation for future studies include a longitudinal study and comparative analysis of RULER SEL (Brackett et al., 2019).

O U T of Stigma: An Evaluation of a Harm Reduction Program in Connecticut
The alarming rise in opioid use and misuse despite several efforts to control it, has resulted in a significant public health crisis around the world. Besides increasing the number of opioid-related deaths, it increases homelessness, joblessness, scholar absenteeism, and family disruption.
This study evaluated the Harm Reduction program\u27s reach, implementation, and development. The main goal of this evaluation was to identify strengths, barriers, and areas where the program could improve and provide recommendations for allocating resources under new grant funding.https://dune.une.edu/ph_ile/1006/thumbnail.jp

Beatrix Gates Interview
On November 13, 2024, MWWC Archivist Jefferson Navicky conducted an interview with poet, teacher, and publisher Beatrix Gates in her house in Brooksville, Maine.
During the interview, Gates talks about the beginnings of Granite Press and her start as a poet, as well as the rich community that sprang up around Granite Press. She also talks at length about the trials and tribulations of publishing the seminal anthology IXOK AMAR GO: Central American Women Poets for Peace (Granite Press 1987; ed. Zoe Anglesey). Gates talks about the IRS audit following the anthology’s publication that lead to the closure of Granite Press, as well as how she reconnected with poetry and what she did after the press closed. Gates ends the interview with advice she would give to young people who want to start a poetry press
Management of Acute Chest Syndrome in an Asylum Seeker: An Interprofessional Approach to Care
This presentation discusses an interprofessional approach to managing a 9-year-old asylum seeker presenting to the ED with acute chest syndrome secondary to sickle cell anemia. By combining osteopathic medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, and public health disciplines, a patient-centered framework was developed to demonstrate interventions to optimize treatment plans and improve patient outcomes.https://dune.une.edu/caiepfall2024/1003/thumbnail.jp

A Policy Analysis of the Effectiveness of Tobacco and Vaping Legislation in Adolescents and Adults in New York State
This policy analysis ascertained the effectiveness of tobacco and vaping legislation in adolescents and adults in New York State (NYS). The analysis discussed the Adolescent Tobacco Use Prevention Act (ATUPA), which is a tobacco policy aimed at tobacco prevention among adolescents and young adults. A detailed approach was conducted with collected data on tobacco and vaping statistics, including NYS smoking rates, morbidity and mortality rates, and prevalence in both adults and adolescents. Data were collected from the NYS Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and others. The socioecological and CDC Policy Analysis Frameworks were used to guide this analysis. In addition, a literature review and an environmental scan were conducted. Although several successful tobacco policies exist in NYS, increased legislation and funding are needed to continue current tobacco control efforts. The analysis provided insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the current policies. It explored potential areas of policy enhancement to address challenges. Efforts to continue increasing the price of tobacco and vaping products are needed. Revenues from these increases would be used to support additional tobacco control programs. There is also a need to extend regulations limiting tobacco and vaping product availability and accessibility, especially near schools. The analysis aims to inform stakeholders regarding strategies to improve public health outcomes. These recommendations could have a lasting impact on tobacco and vaping product usage rates and overall community health.

Implementing a Mobility Program with a Complex Patient in an Acute Care Setting: A Case Report
Background and Purpose: Maintaining functional mobility in an acute care setting helps prevent physiologic deconditioning and prolonged hospital stays. However, not all patients qualify for skilled physical therapy (PT). This case report explores the application of a mobility program before and after a unique gastrointestinal (GI) surgery.
Case Description: A 52-year-old man required PT services on day one following surgery. He experienced severe pain post-operatively and required complex pain management. PT interventions were implemented once per day for two weeks including strength, balance, functional mobility, endurance, pain management, and safety training. Following the termination of skilled PT services, he was referred to a prescribed mobility program one to two times daily, five days per week, ambulating 500-1000 feet per session. The patient self-selected the frequency, pace, and distance walked per session. Outcome measures included the diistance walked per session and the Activity Measure for Post-Acute Care (AM-PAC) Inpatient Mobility Short Form.
Outcomes: During his one-month stay the patient made progress in his mobility as indicated by the distance walked per session from 30 feet at baseline to 650 feet. His AM-PAC scores increased from 12/24 post-operatively to 24/24 by the end of care.
Discussion and Conclusion: Participation in a mobility program contributed to improvements in functional mobility and prevention of deconditioning. The patient exhibited an increase in distance walked per session and improvements in his ability and willingness to participate. This case outlines the implementation, outcomes, and potential barriers associated with a mobility program. More research is needed to determine its effectiveness using a larger sample size and incorporating outcomes such as cardiovascular and patient subjective response
