Red, white, and pink wines will be analyzed for their concentration of inorganic arsenic. Analysis of the wines will be analyzed by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). ENSC 402: Island Countries: Adapt or Evacuate
Get PDFThe goal of our research project is to examine the strategies used by island countries of different economic and geographic size to combat climate change and its impact on shorelines. We analyze cases from two ‘extremes’, the island countries of Japan and the Maldives. We summarize the individual strategies of each country towards handling climate change in regard to sea-level rise on the coast to compare and contrast their different strategies. Our research relies on the concepts from system theory, social policy for “wicked problems in climate change,” adaptive management, and environmental decision-making. This issue is significant because it is often the case that many countries have large cities near the coast or close to water. The issue of sea-level rise threatens the safety of infrastructure, people, economy, and ecosystems. Climate change and sea-level rise are serious issues that have been overlooked by some countries while other countries are thinking ahead and trying to come-up with better solutions and alternatives. The approaches that are taken to adapt to climate change are not always the best, and they are made through processes that may overlook or undermine issues of serious importance. Examining different environmental agendas and decision-making processes can provide insight into the range of activities being implemented to adapt to climate change

Identifying Fluctuating Asymmetry and Developmental Rate as Indicators of Developmental Stability in Drosophila Melanogaster
Get PDFDevelopmental stability is the ability of an individual to maintain proper development despite various environmental conditions, and thus has important implications for the health of an individual. Individuals with less stable development are thought to be at higher risk for developing non-communicable disease, such as diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer’s disease, during adolescence and adulthood. In bilateral organisms, developmental stability can be assessed by measuring deviations from perfect symmetry between the left and right sides of the body, known as Fluctuating Asymmetry. In this project, we measured the developmental rate and Fluctuating Asymmetry of Drosophila melanogaster while subjected to varying metabolic conditions differing by sucrose content. Analysis of Fluctuating Asymmetry observed between drosophila populations subjected to different concentrations of sucrose did not yield significant results; however, various trends in the data elucidated the interactions between developmental stability, metabolic stress, and developmental rate. By working to further establish a link between these factors, this project supports the development of cost-effective early screening methods for diabetes mellitus and related diseases
ENGL 382 - Autism Speaks: Extending Grammar in the Classroom to Students with Autism
Get PDFDeveloping sentence variety and elaboration are important skills for all students, so we wanted to create grammar lessons to help children with autism with these critical skills. After assessing a group of lesson plans found in Amy Benjamin and Joan Berger’s (2014) book, Teaching Grammar: What Really Works, we adapted lesson plans to cater to the needs of students with autism. We used strategies such as modeling, think-alouds, Applied Behavior Analysis, and the Discrete Trial Teaching Method. We created our lesson plan revisions in order to provide teachers with the best resources to create an inclusive environment within their classrooms
