BIOL 404- The Effects of Dioxin-like Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) on the Development of Myeloid Suppressor Cells
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a man-made organic compound consisting of two phenyl rings connected by a single bond, with any number of chlorine molecules occupying positions around the rings. They are most commonly used as a dielectric and coolant fluid in electrical generators and transformers. Manufacture has declined drastically since the 1970s in America due to their exertion of estrogen-mimicking effects in the body, although they continue to persist in harmful concentrations in the environment. PCBs are endocrine-disrupting, and through estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects have been shown to increase breast cancer risk by changing gene expression in several genes common to the formation of breast tissue cancer cells, including IGF-1, which fuels all stages of cancer growth. We intend to test cells in vitro for additional sensitivities to the estrogen mimicking effects of PCB 138 and PCB 153. This will hopefully elucidate the mechanistic effects of PCBs on the endocrine system
HIST 461: Absent From the Bar: Absinthe’s History, Absinthism, and Anti-Absinthe Movements in the United States 1840-2007
This paper seeks to explore the history of absinthe in the United States, as well as anti-absinthe movements and the invented illness of absinthism. The primary focus of the project is from the beginnings of absinthe’s popularity in the United States (in the 1840s) to its banning in 1912 to its relegalization (in a form) in 2007. Absinthe in the United States was treated differently and actively singled out as worse than other forms of high-proof alcohol, with campaigns against absinthe specifically, absinthe bans before Prohibition, and relegalization well after Prohibition
NURS 360: Does the administration of CODE ICE to a cardiac arrest patient result in regained brain function when discontinued?
The increase in heart disease in this country has created the need for more treatment options for out-of hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA). Therapeutic hypothermia, also referred to as code ice, involves the cooling of a patient’s body temperature to around thirty-two degrees Celsius, and it has become a standard of care for patients who are resuscitated after a OOHCA. When these patients experience cardiac arrest outside of the hospital there is a risk for decreased brain function. This decrease in brain function can lead to patient being declared brain dead and placed on a ventilator. However, some research indicates that therapeutic hypothermia has resulted in a higher likelihood of survival and hospital discharge
NURS 360: Position is Pertinent: In ventilated patients, what is the effect of the prone position compared to the fowler’s, supine, or lateral positions on patient mortality?
Our research focuses on the affect patient positioning has on ventilated patients’ mortality. We will be comparing the prone, fowler’s, supine, and lateral positions. These findings will help us come to a conclusion on what position is the best to use for ventilated patients
Saving the Synapse: Assessing Opioid Receptors as Therapeutic Targets in the Management of Opioid Addiction
Understanding drug physiology at the synaptic level is crucial for the design and delivery of treatments for individuals facing opioid addiction. Opioids are analgesic drugs that can agonize endogenous opioid receptors at the neuronal synapse and inhibit signal transduction through pain modulatory pathways, making opioids a popular drug choice for clinical pain management. However, chronic exposure to opioids induces physical and chemical changes in the synapse, resulting in receptor expression downregulation and decreased neurotransmitter synthesis. Downregulation produces a diminished responsiveness to the drug and decreased neurotransmitter release fosters drug dependence, thus contributing to addiction and withdrawal symptoms. These physiological changes are difficult to reverse, thus making addiction treatment and withdrawal management difficult to accomplish.
The current project aims to elucidate the effect of opioids at the synapse in order to further understand the processes behind current addiction treatments through a medicinal chemistry perspective. Through investigation of primary literature concerning opioid activity and neuronal target defense mechanisms, we hope explore strategies for novel drug development in order to counteract the physical, mental, and behavioral consequences of chronic opioid use. As rates of opioid addiction continue to rise, more research is needed to enhance the recovery of individuals facing opioid addiction as well as bring attention to the perils of over-prescribing opioids in clinical settings
BIOL 488: Effects of Cancer Mutations on the CREB-Binding Protein
CREB-Binding protein (CBP) works alongside the p300 protein as a coactivator complex to increase gene expression1. These proteins work together to bind to transcription factors and aid in expression through histone acetylation1. Together, they also are co-activators of the p53 tumor suppressor protein. In many cases, when there are mutations in CBP or p300, p53 is also mutated. The most important domains in the CBP are the bromodomain and the histone acetyltransferase domain. When functioning properly, CBP and p300 protein are tumor suppressors. When they have mutations, unregulated cell growth can occur

Communication is vital for humans who are innately social. In order to, share ideas, form relationships, express emotions or needs, learn new things, and much more, communicating effectively is necessary. According to Bouck and Garguilo (2017), speech and/or language impairments are problems regarding communication and its related areas. This is a broad definition in which delays and disorders range considerably. Not only is there a spectrum in relation to speech-language impairments or SPIs, individuals frequently have related conditions. Understanding the comorbidity of SPIs becomes significant in identifying unique patterns and behaviors which could signify predictability. This identification of patterns or behaviors could help an individual, presumably children in most cases, receive assistance earlier to help build better communication skills
PSYC 384 The Effect of Instagram on Appearance, Self-esteem, and Social Approval
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of Instagram use on self-esteem and social approval, and examine the relations between Instagram use effects and personality traits. Data were collected from 200 participants (average age 22.32 years) during the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters. Participants completed an anonymous questionnaire that included nine original items measuring the effects of Instagram use, and published measures of social media addiction, negative emotionality, and narcissism. Results indicated that males and females did not differ in amount of time they spent using social media in general, including Instagram. Females reported significantly higher levels of self-esteem problems related to Instagram use. A different pattern of personality traits predicted self-esteem problems in males versus females. Higher levels of self-concept problems for males were associated with higher levels of negative emotionality components, namely emotional volatility and depression. Higher levels of self-concept problems for females were associated with higher levels of social media addiction. It may be that males who are prone to higher levels of these traits would be more concerned about their social media presence, and perhaps use Instagram in order to enhance their self-concept. Regarding females, social media addiction may contribute to an obsession with one’s appearance and social media image, thus increasing the motivation to use Instagram to enhance one’s presence. Future research should investigate self-image problems associated with Instagram use and other personality traits
PSYC 461: How Informative Videos and Price Affect People Making Eco-friendly Shopping Habits
There are too many species being harmed by the amount of pollution being generated due to the lack of properly disposing non-reusable products. This study was conducted to see if people actually choose reusable products over non-reusable products while shopping. By recording participants choices during a simulated shopping experience, we found that those who saw informative videos and were given same price for reusable and non-reusable products chose more reusable products. Purchasing reusable products will decrease the amount of unexpected harmful outcomes species encounter
ECON 319: A Closer Look into Trade with Madagascar
Trade may seem like simple transaction between two parties, but in reality, trading comes with many boundaries and challenges that may not be easy to see from the outside. This research was conducted by collecting data about Madagascar’s trade with the United States, the types and amount of products being imported and exported, and a closer look at each economy. In our course, we discussed how the Gravity Model, the idea that most countries will find it easiest and most efficient to trade with big economies that are close rather than ones that are farther away, plays a vital role in many smaller countries’ trading decisions. Even though Madagascar’s trade with the United States does not fit the idea behind this model considering that they are not close geographically, the United States trades millions with Madagascar every year
