NURS 230: Effects of Early Mobilization of Hospitalized Patients Based on Evidence Based Practice
On average, approximately 83% of a patient\u27s hospital stay is spent laying in bed (Currier, et al., 2018). It is clear that mobilization can have many positive benefits for the patient throughout hospitalization and can eliminate numerous complications. According to Perry & Potter (2017), mobilization is “a person’s ability to move about freely” (p. 410). Mobilization impacts body systems, as well as the overall health of the patient. It has been shown that mobility in the hospital setting improves patient outcomes such as prevention of delirium, a reduction in length of hospital stays, and decreased chances of readmission (Dirkes & Koziowski, 2019). Mobility can lead a patient to become more independent and be able to perform activities of daily living, which increases the possibility of early discharge and is cost-effective. Specifically, mobilization positively affects the gastrointestinal, respiratory, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neurological, urinary, and integumentary systems in the body
BIOL 404- Effects of estrogen-mimicking compounds, progesterone and estriol, on myeloid-derived suppressor cell development
Estrogen is primarily known for being a female sex hormone. It has three major subcategories estrone, estradiol, and estriol. They are known to have a role within regulation of the reproductive system and menopause. Progesterone is also a well-known steroid sex hormone that is usually associated with menstruation. These sex hormones are commonly used in oral contraceptive pills. The purpose of this study is to see if progesterone and estriol will have the same effects that estrogen has on MHC II and B7 expression. With the use of flow cytometry, T cell isolation, T cell proliferation, and ELISAs we are able to determine quantitatively the expression of MHC II and B7. We predict both progesterone and estriol will have a decreased production of MHC and B7
MUSC 205: Leadership in Conducting and Diversity in Music
Research was done over the course of three days at a large regional ACDA conference on the diversity of music and different conducting styles. Poster sessions and presentations were all ways we were able to access information and watch other professionals in how they work. A large diversity of music is offered to many people but not all directors will know the correct or best way to accurately perform these pieces. This conference gave us insight into some uncommon conducting styles and how they are able to help a performance as well as an opportunity to see a diverse group of music performed and explanations for how to plan a diverse program like many of the ones we saw
BIOL 488: Proposed Treatments and Therapies for Alpha-Gal Allergy Syndrome (AGAS)
Alpha-Gal Allergy Syndrome (AGAS) is recently discovered allergy to mammalian meat and in many cases consumable or injectable mammalian-derived byproducts . Today, there are not many treatments or therapies for this allergy; The only one in practice with the highest success is the total avoidance diet. More effective therapies and treatments are needed due to the difficulty of avoiding mammal products and the current high rates of accidental exposure. This project focuses on reviewing the recent literature on AGAS treatments and therapies, along with research on related allergies, to propose a potentially successful method to treat or cure this allergy, as well as raise awareness of its increasing prevalence. I propose a survey to gather information on patients with AGAS and their practiced treatments and therapies to be able to compare this data to the literature gathere
BIOL 488: Genetic Modification of Bacteria Could Stabilize Thermal Lability of Plastic Degrading Enzyme
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene (PE) are extremely common and are the most widely produced and used plastics in the world. Extremely resistant to degradation in nature due to their origins from fossil oil. PET is used for synthetic fibers, bottle resin, packaging, etc. Contemporary methods (recycling and incineration) are often time consuming that result in harmful by-products. Solutions may lie in an enzyme that was discovered in Japan (2016) from the bacterium Ideonella Saikenesis that has the ability to naturally degrade plastic.

BIOL 488: Overview of Health Consequences in The Ketogenic Diet and Efficacy in Treating Type-2 Diabetes
The ketogenic diet is an increasingly popular tool for weight loss. It has shown benefits for Type II Diabetes patients in reducing the use of medication for treatment and keeping blood glucose levels to manageable levels. This approach to diabetes management is stunted, however, due to a multitude of adverse effects such as acidosis and atherogenic risk factors. Dietary trials were performed to assess the efficacy of both diets in reducing blood glucose levels and other against the contemporary western diet, composed of a moderate-carbohydrate and moderate-fat macronutrient profile. Upon completion, diabetic subjects in both the high-carbohydrate and low ketogenic diet should show a reduction in blood glucose in line with recommended levels. Ketogenic diet subjects will elicit several worrying symptoms such as headaches, gastrointestinal disturbances, and ketoacidosis, along with higher total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. This trial supports previous studies that show a high risk involved with KD. High fiber whole food diets may provide similar benefits with Type II diabetic patients without associated risk factors. KDs should only be used clinically as an emergency solution when others are ineffective. This research underscores the need to assess quality of macronutrients along with their respective ratios relative to total caloric intake
