The role of events and affect in perceived organizational support: a within-person approach
Purpose The purpose is to understand how affective events employees experience at work, and emotions those events elicit, influence within-person fluctuations in perceived organizational support (POS). The authors explore the possibility of socioemotional needs as a boundary condition of the effects. They integrate affective events theory with organizational support theory to develop their arguments. Design/methodology/approach Using a diary study method, 55 working adults responded to three surveys per day for ten days (876 total datapoints). Findings The results suggest POS fluctuates daily. Furthermore, workplace affective events are significantly related to discrete emotions (happiness and anger), which are significantly related to fluctuations in POS. Indirect effects were generally stronger when socioemotional needs were high compared to low, though the moderation was not statistically significant. Research limitations/implications The authors extend organizational support theory by integrating affective events theory; they highlight the role of affective events and transient emotion in relation to momentary changes in POS and explore socioemotional needs as a moderator of those relationships. Practical implications Organizations can be mindful of employees\u27 daily experiences when considering how to foster POS; minimizing negative affective events and maximizing supportive affective events may enhance POS. Originality/value This study is the first to consider predictors of short-term fluctuations in POS. Moreover, the authors integrate affective events and discrete emotions to consider the role of affect in organizational support theory
COVID-19 and the Health Industry: A Test of Market Efficiency
The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. How does the market react to a global pandemic announcement? How efficient is the market? The purpose of this study is to test for semi-strong form market efficiency. Will the healthcare industry show excess gains? A link between the market and pandemics can be inferred but has not been heavily studied. In the efficient market hypothesis, Fama (1970) proposes that in semi-strong form market efficiency, all public information is factored into the market and no investor can achieve a risk-adjusted, above normal return. To study this relationship, S&P 500 data on 10 healthcare firms was collected for several days surrounding the announcement and standard event study methodology from finance literature was used. Evidence here supports the expected positive signal associated with the sample firms and pandemic announcement. Likewise, the results support the semi-strong form efficient market hypothesis and suggests the possibility of trading on this information up to 24 days before the announcement

The Toxicity of Cancel Culture
Cancel culture is a social phenomenon in which an individual or group involved in controversy is targeted by the general public in order to remove their presence from a social or professional platform. Over the last few years, the cancel culture mindset has become increasingly hypocritical and toxic. This presentation aims to analyze different instances of cancel culture in action in order to: determine any trends of controversial behavior, examine the discourse environment that\u27s most often stimulated and its influence on the general public, evaluate any unfair biases present among cancel culture advocates, and better understand the negative impact that cancel culture has on intellectual debate and artistic creation
