Effect of Lancer Park Detention Pond on Stormwater Sediment Concentrations
During rain events, stormwater collects sediments and other pollutants during runoff and transports them to receiving water bodies. Detention ponds can reduce pollutant concentrations in stormwater by allowing particulate matter to settle out of the water column. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Longwood University\u27s Lancer Park stormwater detention pond in reducing sediment concentrations. This was accomplished by quantifying the difference between sediment concentrations of stormwater entering and leaving the pond. Inflow and outflow samples were collected from the pond for 3 separate rain events and the samples were filtered, dried, and weighed. The change in the sediment concentrations were used to determine the reduction in sediment provided by the detention pond. It is expected that the detention pond will significantly reduce the amount of sediment transported from the Lancer Park complex to the receiving stream (Buffalo Creek)
Squirrels on Longwood\u27s Campus
In this project, we aim to analyze the distribution, behavior, and abundance of squirrels on Longwood\u27s campus. We hypothesize that squirrels will be most abundant where canopy cover is high, and that these campus squirrels are generally unaffected by surrounding human activity. Multiple sites on campus were observed, and a survey was used to gather data about squirrel activity and sightings from Longwood students. The results indicate that Cox, Wheeler and Stubbs have the highest frequency of squirrels, and that squirrels are most commonly observed being active. Canopy cover was found to have no correlation with abundance of squirrels. Squirrels are highly active and adaptable to various locations on Longwood\u27s campus
Analysis of Oxycontin Addiction and Recovery From Both a Physical and Psychological Lens
We will investigate the physical impacts both short and long term effects of of substance use. In doing so we will frame an argument for the substance\u27s addictive properties as it relates to both its physically addictive and sociological addictive properties. In doing, so a stronger understanding of how an individual can move through the stages of substance use, to abuse, and finally addiction will be reviewed. We will then address current treatment strategies for the substance and how they address or fail to address both the physical and sociological impacts of its use
Microbial Diversity of Rural and Urban Soil at Different Depths on Longwood University\u27s Campus
Microbial diversity is the range of various kinds of bacteria. The purpose of this experimental research was to determine the complex diversity of bacteria among soil samples at two locations on Longwood University\u27s campus. The study found that there was a higher microbial diversity in the rural soil sample location compared to the urban soil sample location
The Impacts of Consuming Peanuts During Pregnancy
Peanut allergy accounts for the majority of severe food-related allergic reactions. Childhood allergies have increased in prevalence by 50% between 1997 to 2011 with peanut allergies almost tripling between 1997 and 2017 (Turke, 2017). It tends to present early in life and affected individuals usually do not outgrow it. Reactions to peanuts can range from mild to severe, such as anaphylaxis. The diagnosis of a peanut allergy is confirmed with the detection of peanut-specific IgE (Czolk R., 2021). The question remains how does one develop a peanut allergy? Our research project has used evidence-based practice and nursing research to determine if consumption of peanuts by a pregnant woman can affect the child\u27s likelihood of being born with a peanut allergy
