Lake Transparency in Farmville, VA
No full textWe based our experiment on the question of how the size of the lake and its proximity to human activity affect the clarity of lakes in Farmville. We followed the hypothesis that clarity will decrease depending on how high the level of human interaction with the area around each lake is. Three lakes of differing size and proximity to human activity were measured: Sandy River Reservoir, Longwood Campus pond, and Lancer Park Pond. The secchi depth and level of suspended solids were recorded for each lake twice over a three-week period. We will used the results collected to evaluated our hypothesis of water clarity will decrease depending on lake size and level of human interaction
Which weather and water conditions affect the biodiversity and abundance of macroinvertebrates the most?
Get PDFMacroinvertebrates are important biological monitors that play a valuable role in the metabolism of freshwater food chains. Previous studies have suggested that conditions such as dissolved oxygen, pH, water temperature, precipitation, and air temperature can affect the abundance of macroinvertebrates which can in turn affect the health of freshwater ecosystems. This research aimed to find the relationship between macroinvertebrate biodiversity and various environmental conditions in freshwater ecosystems. Weather data was taken from a weather station at Lancer Park and water data was taken on-site at Wilson stream, both locations in Farmville, Virginia. Sample collection and identification occurred twice a week for five weeks. Macroinvertebrates were collected using a depolled net and then stored for identification. It is expected that moderate weather conditions and above average precipitation will be associated with higher observed macroinvertebrate biodiversity. However, if the weather conditions are cooler with below average precipitation there will be a lower biodiversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates

No full textVentilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an example of a major hospital-acquired infection (HAI) that occurs when a lung infection results from use of a ventilator. A major cause of VAP is aspiration of oral bacteria due to ineffective or absent oral hygiene (Gupta et al., 2016).Though serious, the rate of VAP can be decreased through nursing interventions. The purpose of this research study is to determine how the implementation of a frequent, standardized oral hygiene regimen can decrease the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia in those patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Through the use of peer-reviewed research articles and published research studies, we will look at the impact of oral hygiene in this population on health care costs and overall patient outcomes. We predict that the early and consistent implementation of oral hygiene in mechanically ventilated patients will decrease the risk of VAP, reduce health care costs, and improve patient outcomes
