A Rhetorical Analysis of How Contemporary Pop Songs Raise Awareness of Mental Health and Addiction Issues
No full textMy study uses Aristotle\u27s three classical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) to examine the use of mental health and addiction awareness in contemporary pop songs; specifically, in the songs In my Blood by Shawn Mendes, “1-800-273-8255” by Logic, and Sober by Demi Lovato. In my analysis, I discuss the use of these appeals and how they help dive deeper into the meaning of the lyrics in the songs and their effectiveness. This analysis discusses the use of including the artist\u27s personal experience into their lyrics and how it provides both emotion and credibility to the listener. Shawn Mendes explains how difficult his battle with anxiety has been and Logic talks about how his journey of overcoming his battle with suicidal thoughts. Demi Lovato explains in her song how this is not her first battle with addiction or her first time seeking treatment for it. All three of these artists use the platform to discuss important, but sensitive topics in their own creative way, all while raising awareness at the same time

Implications of this project are that the Industrial Revolution\u27s effects changed crime and the criminal justice system in ways that have lasted to today\u27s world

Through the lens of Aristotle\u27s classical appeals “ethos, pathos, and logos“ I set out to analyze one of her most famous speeches: her address to the Harvard University class of 2008. With quotes like, It is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default, there is no doubt in Rowling\u27s ability to inspire. Does her speech meet other logical and rhetorical standards, though? My study offers a thorough analysis of the rhetorical and logical aspects of this speech from beginning to end. For Rowling, and many other orators, it becomes clear that it may take more than magic (and inspiring words) to move an audience
Water Quality Assessment of Farmville, VA
Get PDFIn Farmville, some people drink tap water, but others choose only to drink filtered or bottled water. Some blame this on taste, and others say the mineral content affects their skin from sinks and showers. I propose to conduct an analysis of water hardness and chloride, nitrate, and lead levels of water from various sources in Farmville, Virginia. To measure each parameter, an EDTA titration was carried out to test for water hardness, anodic stripping voltammetry was conducted to detect lead, ion-selective electrode was used to measure chloride, and a modified Griess reaction was carried out to measure nitrate levels. Ideally, concentrations of these parameters will be within the recommended amounts, but the data may help to better understand why Farmville residents have a disliking of tap water

The Effect of Urbanization on Water Quality
Get PDFThe past several decades have seen the proliferation of urban areas around the world (Uitto, 1999). Land-cover change, correlated with different forms of land use, is documented to have significant impact on earth\u27s hydrologic systems (Aichele, 2005). Significant studies point to urbanization as being a key source of pollutants in earth\u27s watersheds and natural hydrologic landscapes(Li et al. 2016; Aichele 2005). This study aims to measure the effect of urbanization on the water quality of Gross Creek. Concentrations of E.coli, phosphorus, nitrogen, and suspended sediments were measured from four sampling sites along Gross Creek in Farmville, Virginia. This process was repeated before and after three major rain events. It is predicted that due to stormwater runoff from rain events, there will be higher concentrations of E.coli, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment present in Gross Creek after rain events and in areas of more urban surroundings
Encouraging public outreach and education to drive COVID-19 vaccination in Farmville
Get PDFAs part of our Biology Capstone, we have created a white paper to communicate the importance of public outreach and education regarding the current COVID-19 vaccines to the Farmville Town Council. Previous research has shown that available vaccinations help to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and highlights the importance of widespread community vaccination. Our recommendation to the Farmville Town Council is to create an educational campaign to encourage vaccination within the Farmville community
