    No full text
Children's books play an important role in a child's life. Children books should have certain characteristics both in content and physical features, in order to be liked and read by children. Children libraries as places for children to access books easily, should collect books according to needs, requirements and interests of children at different ages. At this point, selection of children books has a crucial importance. In Turkey, excessive part of collection of children's libraries is composed of books selected by Ministry of Culture. In this research, children books which are selected in 1997 by the Ministry of Culture to be sent to children's libraries all around the country, are examined. As a result insufficiency of the selection activity is proven

Some characteristics of children's books are very important for their development. A carefully selected book captures the curiosity of the child, it improves his linguistic, esthetical and emotional satisfaction. Especially for eightyear old children, books are very important, because at that age they can easily read and they want to improve their reading ability. They put themselves in place of the heroes of the books they read, and try to imitate them. They can buy books with their pocket money or they can lend their books to their friends or they can use children's libraries. Up to eight years of age, children expect the intense care of people around them and they evaluate their behavior.. Especially at this age they take their parents as models for their future life. Therefore parents who admit the importance of reading can be ideal models to their children if they also have enough knowledge of children's books. At this study, with the hyphothesis that most of the parents do not have sufficient knowledge on children's books, second-graders of Hacettepe University Primary School and their parents were made subject to an investigation and were given several questionnaires. According to obtained results, our hypothesis is verified and it has been found that parents who do not have enough knowledge on such books cannot constitute a positive effect on their children

Language is one of the most important development areas for a child. Children's books contribute to language development of the children significantly. In other words, well-prepared children's books have important roles on the language development of the children. The issue of language in children books is generally examined in the context of characteristics of content. This study investigates, how illustrated Turkish children's books, tales and story-novels that are prepared for 7-14 years of age group has changed from the point of language rules between 1967 and 1997. We examined a total of 71 children's books, 24 of which were published in 1967 and 47 in 1997, on the basis of the following criteria: syntax, spelling and type-setting errors; use of punctuation marks, foreign and slang words. We found that the use of language in Turkish children's books has improved positively between 1967 and 1997

As social organizations school libraries acquire and organize all kinds of information sources which are essential for education and training, in order to meet current information needs of society. They also contribute dynamically to their parent organizations in reaching their aims. The goals of present research are four fold: - to identify information needs of high school students with regard to their school activities and special interests; - to identify elements which have effects on their information needs; - to develop models which include solutions to school library problems; - to suggest solutions to problems related to school library services. Research hypothesis is based on inefficiency of school library services: "School libraries must find out information needs of their users (students) and take measures to meet them, so the system of education can function efficiently." Present research is based on a survey and bibliometrics methods. Data have been collected by utilizing literature analysis, questionnaires, interviews and observation techniques. Interviews and one thousand five hundred questionnaires were conducted on seventeen high schools in the metropolitan Ankara. For the analysis of questionnaire results chi-square test and correlation technique were applied. As a result, research hypothesis was proved and information needs of high school students in regard to their school activities and special interests and how they meet these needs have been found out. According to the results, information needs of students are effected by: Location and type of the school, subject, sex, previously attended schools, level of achievement, educational and financial status of the family, use of information sources, problems in accessing information, library orientation programs, free time activities and special interests, location of information sources, use of other libraries, and help provided by the staff of libraries. Based on the results of this study two models have been developed: "An Information Network Model for School Libraries" and "A School Library Model". "The Information Network Model" has been designed in a way that it would be capable of adjusting itself to the hierarchical structeru of Ministry of National Education. As to the "School Library Model", it has been developed to provide a harmony among financial sources, personnel, services, management, education and training activities that are thought to form the infrastructure of the Network Model. The characteristic features of the models, beside their advantages, have been discussed in addition to the questions relating to their applications. Recommendations have also been made according the results of this research

The analysis of the impact of citation classics and relevance rankings using Pennant diagrams

Citation indexes are important authority resources for measuring the contribution of scientists and scientific publications to literature. Many studies in information retrieval are based on research aiming to develop retrieval algorithms. These studies tend to receive citations from different fields because of the interdisciplinary nature of information retrieval. Therefore, it is important to analyze the so-called "citation classics" retrospectively to find out their impact on other fields. Yet, it is not easy to do this using citation indexes, especially for relatively old papers, as traditional citation analysis tends not to reveal the full impact of a work on other studies at its time and periods that follow. In order to see the big picture it is important to study the contribution of these studies on other disciplines as well. In this study the impact of Maron and Kuhns' citation classic on "probabilistic retrieval" published in 1960 has been visualized using pennant diagrams that were developed on the basis of relevance theory, information retrieval and bibliometrics. We hypothesized that "The interdisciplinary relations that are unobservable with traditional citation analysis can be revealed using the pennant diagrams method". In order to test the hypothesis works that cited Maron and Kuhns' study between the years of 1960 and 2015 have been downloaded with their references (a total of 4,176 unique works) and graphics have been prepared by the macros written in MS Excel. Of 4,176 works, 90 were selected using convenience sampling techniques to create static and interactive pennant diagrams for further analysis. Another important output of this study is the relevance rankings. As an alternative to the relevance rankings based on the similarity of references already used in citation indexes, relevance rankings have been created using the pennant diagrams that took into account not only items that cited the core vii (seed) paper but also citations to the items that cited the core paper. Relevance rankings based on the similarity of references and that of pennant diagrams have been compared. Findings support the hypothesis in that pennant diagrams provide information as to which papers that the core paper on probabilistic model influenced or got influenced from, directly or indirectly. Relevance ranking based on pennant diagrams revealed the impact of the core paper on information retrieval field as well as on other disciplines. Furthermore, it identified the relations between these somewhat disconnected fields, between authors, works, and journals that cannot be readily identified using traditional citation analysis. Relevance rankings using pennant diagrams seem to have been more successful than the relevance rankings based on references similarity. This study is the first such study in Turkey that uses pennant diagrams for relevance rankings. The data used in graphs and relevance rankings are available through citation indexes (the frequencies of total citations and co-citations). Thus, alternative relevance rankings based on pennant diagrams can be offered to users. Pennant diagrams can help researchers track the relevant literature more easily as well as identify how a core work influences other works in a specific field or in other fields

The desire to live a peaceful and safe environment of people caused to come together with other people to make consensus of the formation of the first organized society. These organizations have turned to a state over time. To interact with other individuals and society both as individuals and communities where people depend, has led to the creation of mutual rights and responsibilities over time. By the invention of letters, the rights and responsibilities have been made to prove documented in writing so that the archives were formed spontaneously. The first time there has not been a problem in the documents produced to document the achievement is only slightly increased the amount of documents has led to the formation of housing search within a system of existing documents. The individual or the society is doing documentation is considered to be due to the need to leave a mark on this world. The documentation shows that they can be held accountable on behalf of the public mind in all situations where hearing from others to see. Failure to do so they can not be seen when we consider the access to documents is not available, and therefore concluded that avoid giving account. In modern society, government, transparency, accountability, they do missions, such as cost and efficiency principles in the name of public documents is loaded, the system is unable to access the documentation at any time and converts the information to produce benefit. As numbers of documents increased, new studies have been conducted on archives in public in order to benefit from information in an efficient manner by distunguishing important papers from unusable and unnecessary ones. In this study, a part of Standard File Plan engaged in the same activity 3 of the application and the selection and disposal of the different institutions, both physically and has made certain findings on how the electronic media carried out according to existing regulations. Republic also a team tradition of Ottoman bureaucracy over our study is considered together with the problems is given in this section

In recent years, rapid growth of digital information resources, the information density in the digital era has brought information retrieval problems. Organizing information in the digital environment is necessary, and in this context, studies to solve this problem have gained momentum. Information architecture is an important part of the solution. Information architecture is a discipline which deals with the principles, concepts and tools necessary for founding effective information retrieval systems in the interactive spaces especially in the areas accessible via Web for ensuring the sustainability. The basic occupation of the information architecture is to provide information by designing user-friendly systems in effective and understandable format. Retrieving information efficiently / effectively the advent of the situation is based on planning the developed system according to the user requirements. With user-focused / centered approach, useful information retrieval systems should be established. Retrieving the information which the user is looking for should be facilitated, user satisfaction should be provided. The aim should be to dedicate "useful / user-friendly" systems. In the context of the thesis topic, the concept of information architecture, its principles, processes and team, relationship between information architecture and information and document management areas are examined. Through the questionnaire which is applied to Istanbul University Central Library users, information architecture practices' effects to developing of interface design especially in the process of information retrieval are tried to be determined
