The differences between disciplines in the academisians usage of electronic journals
Electronic journals are the most efficient scholar communication tools for academicians searching, keeping up with current affairs and publication of their works. Scientific journals are published in the 17th century for the first time. It is seen that the publishing of electronic journals is formed with technological developments in the 1990’s. Projects of many universities and professional groups begin to attribute publising of electronic journals. With the effect of open access electronic publishing begins to gain a different dimension
These developments cause many researches on electronic journals. However, studies upon the features of electronic journals and usage causes affecting them are few. It is seen that especially with the development of the electronic journal publishing, studies on users in this subject began to increase. But still, there is not a study which aims to use the sources of different academicians from different disciplines.
So our research aims to show the place of electronic journals in communication, the development of these sources up untill today and the effects of differences among disciplines on use of electronic journals. Furthermore, the findings which we obtain are compared with similar studies in literature. In this respect, the hypothesis of our research is as follows: “The academicians use of e-journals varies depending on
-the discipline they are associated with,
-the knowledge and experiments of the users and
-the local factors.”
In our research, literature survey, survey and interview techniques have been used. While the capacity of universe is 1428 academicians, sampling is made up of 249 persons. Sampling is divided into four disciplines which are science , engineering, social science and humanities.
As a result of our study, it is seen that there are similarities and differences in the features of Ankara University academicians usage of electronic journals. It is found that engineers and sciencists use e-journals more excessively when compared to other disciplines. The human scientists are observed to be the group of academicians who use e-journals least. User preference in scientific journals, their attitutes towards the weak and strong sides of journals, their knowledge about open access, the states of benefiting from open access sources and the things which they pay attention while publishing an article change according to the discipline which they are associated with
Cost-benefit analysis of electronic databases: The case of Başkent University Library
Cost-benefit analysis of electronic databases: The Case of Başkent University Library, MA, Ankara, 2006. Library services and products involve direct material costs and indirect costs such as time costs. A buy decision for a private product or service necessitates an examination of the benefits and costs of this product or service for the library users. One of the methods for cost efficiency analysis is cost-benefit analysis. Cost-benefit analysis involves a comparative examination of the (actual and potential) benefits and cost of suggesting and implementing the product or service. Librarians may use the output of cost-benefit analysis in examining the efficiency of their budget and the sources acquired for the library. This study aims to measure the benefits that Başkent University gain from subscribing to electronic databases. To this particular aim costs of subscription for 2004 and 2005 have been identified and included in this study. Moreover, in order to define "benefits", data concerning subscriptions to printed sources have been included in the study. The study asserts that. The unit cost of subscriptions to electronic databases is less than the unit cost of subscribing to printed material for the Başkent University.. There are no databases that has high usage costs.. It is possible to save from the budget by way of replacing relatively high cost databases with alternatives that has lower costs. Above mentioned hypothesies are approved according to the result of the research
Developing library centered information literacy programs at universities: Hacettepe University example
It is necessary that individuals in Information Society should use information intensively. In order to deal with the realities of Information Society individuals need to become information literates which means having acquired the skills to access and use information from a variety of sources effectively. Educational institutions have the primary responsibility for providing the students with these skills. In this regard universities have crucial roles to equip students with the information and skills required. The objectives of this research are to assert the theoretical basis of information literacy; to determine if students of Hacettepe University have these skills and to identify their problems and to develop a proposal for information literacy program applicable for Hacettepe University. In this study, based on survey method, data were gathered through questionnaires and literature analysis. The questionnaires were prepared taking the standards of Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) as a point of reference. The questionnaires were applied to 262 students attending their graduate education at the Institutes of Social Sciences, Pure and Applied Sciences and Health Sciences of Hacettepe University. Findings were evaluated by "t Test" and "One way Variant Analysis" methods. In conclusion while this study has revealed that students have some difficulties in terms of information literacy skills it has also proved our hypothesis that the lack of Information Literacy Program in Hacettepe University is the major obstacle for the students who are searching, obtaining, accessing, evaluating, using and communicating information

Evaluation of the 2004 program of the primary schools in terms of reading and library use habits
Primary schools are the basic components of the education which continues during the lifetime. In this phase of the education, in addition to basic knowledge like literacy, accounting, surviving, general values, which are better to learn and imply, of the society are learnt. Therefore, it is very important for children to be imposed to use of library and reading habit during the primary school. On that point, how much the primary school programmes include those aspects have the key roles to have these habits. It is seemed to be necessary to take the subject in terms of those habits whether they are promoted or not in the programmes. This work has done to clarify how much the 2004 Programme of the Primary Schools that was implemented in 2005 - 2006 educational year, include those habits, on what level and how. The work was conducted with class teachers in 2 private and 7 public schools that are in the borders of the Ankara Municipality. The questionnaire was asked to 118 teachers of those schools. The hypothesis of the search; "the 2004 Programme of the Primary Schools include reading and library use habits partially sufficient and in an incomplete - unsystematic way." In the work, firstly, the teaching programmes of the lessons of Turkish, Social Sciences, Daily Life, Science and Technology, Mathematics are examined and evaluated in terms of reading and library use habits. Subsequently, opinions of teachers on the matter are analysed.
