Effects of illustrated children's books on reading customs
Childhood is the right time to gain the reading habit as it is the period with the pyhsical, cognitive, personality and social development. Books will become an essential ingredient of life if the caregivers/parents and teachers regularly support the pyhsical, cognitive, personality and social development of the child with age appropriate books. It shall not be forgotten that caregivers/parents and teachers are rolemodels for children. A child observing his/her mum/dad reading, either books, newspapers or the like, if he/she owns his/her own bookshelf, will be eager to join the reading hour with his/her parent/s. In today's world there is a book for every age group. Turkey has come a long way in this matter and it is now possible to find any kind of book on the bookshelves to support any age group. Books are half toys, half books for the children aged between 1-3. These books are usually ABC type of books with little or no text, decorated with pictures of people, objects or animals they see around. Stories start to become attractive for children between ages 4-5. Authenticity is an important issue in books for this age group as children's imagination is still limited with what they see around. Children between ages 6-7 enjoy reading and listening to short stories with pictures of other children and/or animals. The difference between text and illustration is more solid for them at this stage. By the time they are 8 years old, children are literate. Their reading adventure will become even stronger when they have a chance to read books on nature, human life, traveling, adventures, and such, that are attractive to them. As a last word, the earlier the child meets with the book, the better. For the children to gain the reading habit, they need to meet books appropriate to their developmental characteristics, and books that support their literacy level once they become literate
