Istanbul University Information Management Department students' information seeking behavior according to the Kuhlthau Model: An ethnographic study
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the information seeking behaviors of Istanbul University Information Management Department formal education 2nd degree class students and investigate their information seeking behavior especially emotional situation in the research process according to Kuhlthau Model. Understanding university students' information seeking behaviors is important for spending their academic life according to their aims. Here, the biggest responsibility falls to faculty members and librarians. Understanding of students' information seeking behavior deeply and guiding them appropriately are important for both occupational groups. In this context, it is necessary to know university students' emotions, the problems they encounter and information systems they prefer during a research paper process and know other information seeking behaviors. There are many models to examine information seeking behavior; Kuhlthau's Information Search Process Model (ISP) is a model which explains students' information seeking behaviors and experiences they have while doing a research paper in the aspect of emotion, thought and actions. To Kuhlthau, there is no problem of lack of information today, therefore the basic topic to which we should focus is the user's process of information retrieval. To achieve the objectives stated above, ethnographic method which is a qualitative research method is used; the data is collected via participant observation, interview and questionnaire. The research takes places in the classroom, university after classroom and Istanbul University Central Library between September-December in 2014/2015. According to the data collected, it is understood that while doing research paper students mostly use internet sources, then library catalogue, they want help mostly form faculty member and their friends, they need help while using library services and their information behaviors demonstrate compliance with Kuhlthau Model
An evaluation of the conscious and approaches of universty librarians in Ankara about professional ethic
Ethics constitute the whole of principles regarding what people living in a society should or should not do. Principles of ethics are supposed to be established and implemented for unity of individuals in a society, and for development of such society. Thus, Information and Document Management (IDM) ethics consist of principles regarding what should or should not be done while performing works and rendering services in the field of librarianship. IDM ethics are important with respect to personnel and user satisfaction, and enhancing improvement of the library by avoiding arbitrary actions. This study was conducted in order to reveal awareness on and attitude towards occupational ethics, of the university librarians in Ankara, and to determine their opinions regarding ethical aspect of the actions of their colleagues within practices and applications carried out in the libraries they work. In this respect, the area of research in this study consists of all university libraries in Ankara. Descriptive survey technique was employed in our study which was sampled with 128 librarians working at libraries of 14 state and foundation universities in Ankara. Results of the study indicate that librarians believe that their colleagues and they do not have adequate knowledge of occupational ethics, and they need to be informed about the subject. There are many librarians who did not hear of the concept of occupational ethics in the course of their university educations, and were not provided with in-service training on the topic at the libraries they work. The number of librarians who are not members of Türk Kütüphaneciler Derneği (Turkish Association of Librarians), and also not aware of the Principles of Occupational Ethics established by the association, is significantly high. In this regard, our hypothesis formulated as "University librarians in Ankara do not have sufficient knowledge of occupational ethics, and they do not act strictly following the principles of ethics while performing library works and services" was proved in line with the results of the study
In the direction of changing user behavior, the web discovery tool model proposal
Nowadays, the common expectations of the library users are reaching the information by the fastest and the easiest way. In recent years, the increasing use of the internet in every field and the increase in the speed of access have changed the user information seeking behavior on the internet. Depending on the development in information technology, users have become a group that uses digital media tools such as internet, computer, mobile phone. The most prominent feature of this group is that they want to access the information by the fastest and the easiest way. Similarly, innovations in technology have enabled new possibilities for diversity and information access in resource types in library collections. In today's university libraries, there are different library catalogs at national and international levels and databases with different interfaces according to the different subjects. For this reason, users prefer to search on Google and similar search engines, rather than using databases and library catalogs with different interfaces. It becomes compulsory to use web-based information access tools to manage the rapidly increasing number of library resources in today's information environment, to make the simultaneously access possible, and to bring all related resources together. This allows the user to quickly access all library resources from a single platform. The purpose of the research is to identify the key elements of a web-based resource discovery tool that will facilitate users' access to information resources and to provide a model recommendation that includes administrative and functional implementation steps in accordance with this structure. For this purpose, data were gathered from the researchers and the university librarians in order to determine the user expectations. The data obtained from the study were evaluated and the hypotheses of the research are approved. According to that, they are directed to the accessible sources through the listed relatively and ordered properly results which are searched on a single search box such as Google. Existing web discovery tools are inadequate for fulfilling the researchers information need. A non-commercial platform is needed in the university libraries in our country, providing a quick and simple one interface to meet the information needs of users to search all information sources. In the direction of these proven hypothesis, the general items of the web discovery tool were determined; administrative and functional implementation steps are presented as the model proposal
