Emergence of Albania Enviromental Movements
Environmental movements emerged in Albania is a relatively underexplored topic. This thesis discusses how and when the environmental movements started in Albania, what incidents or occurrences triggered these movements, and the characteristics of these movements. The research was carried out through thirteen structural interviews. Therefore, the collected data was mainly from primary sources. Interviews were conducted with individuals who were actually involved in environmental affairs. Respondents answered the interview questions either via email or via face-to-face interviews. Face-to-face interviews were recorded on audiotapes. The research is exploratory and qualitative. It is a case study and its sampling technique is judgmental (purposive).
The thesis starts with a conceptual and theoretical background of social movements. Later, origins of environmental movements in the World are introduced. After discussing the Albanian case for environment, the Albanian legislation on environmental protection and political alignments of Albanian environmental movements are introduced.
The results show that Albanian environmental movements emerged as a reaction to cruel exploitation of natural heritage of Albania. In the first decade of democratization, the movements were relatively weak due to post-communist turmoil period. In the second decade, the movements have grown simultaneously as civil society grew in Albania. The results also suggest that among many sporadic cases of environmentalism, two cases are more prominent: “Vlora Industrial and Energy Park” and “Alliance Against Waste Import” cases. In this study, it was concluded that the two mentioned cases of Albanian environmental movements have several characteristics of modern social movements. Both of them can be categorized as successful in terms of the effects and consequences they created. Even though they have lasted for several years, they can be considered as temporary movements. That is because, these movements have not been institutionalized although more than a hundred environmental NGOs existed in Albania.Epoka Universit
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE FOR DATA PROCESSING IN MEDICAL IMAGING
Nowadays there are a lot of image processing methods that offer a lot of different things. One of them is MATLAB, which is a software that provides a high level programming language combined with a lot of libraries and an easy Graphic User Interface.
Here we look at MATLAB’s Image Processing Toolbox and its capabilities and building GUI using the GUIDE tool. Using these two libraries we will build an application capable of processing images, our focus will be on medical imaging, more specifically finding and comparing the cells in images. The solutions and ideas presented here are open for interpretation and further development
The Use of Humour in Language Teaching
Learning a second language needs a “positive” classroom environment. The main aim of this paper is to look through the effectiveness of “humour” in second language classroom with the viewpoint of Bangladeshi high school graduate students and their instructors. This research will investigate students’ views and the frequency of what extent they use humour in their classroom and which particular skills the learners think that they improve via humour. This research verifies, consistently with past studies, that the use of “humour” in ESL classrooms reduces anxiety, improves classroom atmosphere, increases student-teacher empathy, and even assists learning. This research is also specifically designed to find out whether using humours to teach vocabulary bring out significant learning outcomes in language classroom. More exclusively, students reported greater satisfaction of the learning process when humour is used. The findings suggest that the use of “humour” has a positive outcome on the language teaching setting in increasing motivation and success thereafter and it may aid the process in many aspects such as memory of text. Along with encouragement, “humour” should be used by language teachers to make their classrooms more attractive and advantageous to learning
Underscoring Paulo Freire's Freedom as Essence of Educational Practice in Kenya
Kenyan people, educational reforms could perhaps underscore Paulo Freire’s concept of banking education. Freire articulates the banking concept of education as a hindrance to the realization of the essence of education as practice of freedom. In the banking model education climate, students are often treated as receptacles for the knowledge that comes from the instructor, and are therefore not given a free orientation to their own ideas. This articulation of education stifles critical thinking, because students are taught to disassociate their educational improvement from their experience. The banking approach puts education in crisis because critical thinking or first order thinking that is fundamental to human experience fails to cultivate its importance to the skills and information demonstrated in a classroom
Motivation To Learn In Secondary School Physics
The aim of this study was to adapt the Science Motivation Questionnaire developed by Glynn and Koballa (2006) into Albanian context as Physics Motivation Questionnaire and report validity and reliability of the study. The sample was 110 secondary school students from four private high schools in Albania. The data collected was analyzed and compared with the original questionnaire. Similar factor loadings were found. Based on the principal component analysis six dimensions which were intrinsically motivated physics learning, extrinsically motivated physics learning, confidence in learning physics, relevance of learning physics to personal goals, anxiety about physics assessment, and self-determination for learning physics were found out. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability was found to be 0.805. This questionnaire aims to measure secondary school students’ motivation to learn physics
Strategies In Translating Idioms And Fixed Expressions From English Into Albanian
The purpose of this paper is to identify the problems and explore the methods, strategies and techniques related to the translation of idioms and the fixed expressions, based on main translation theories. In the translation field there is still a lot to do especially regarding publications or works dealing with both theory and/or practice of idiom translation. As part of a language, usually idioms have been included within the body of bilingual dictionaries, being treated as part of an entry and not as a separate unit. This can be improved by publishing specific dictionaries for idiomatic expressions. Translation in general presents a lot of difficulties and issues to deal with. Still the process becomes more complicated when we deal with idioms and fixed expressions, which at first seem to be untranslatable. The issue of translatability or untranslatability in general and of idioms in particular has always concerned the researchers of translation studies and translators in particular. This is an important concept on how one is to translate them in different contexts. Different methods, techniques and shifts used by numerous translators, scholars and illustrations taken from theoretical and practical field show that there are some procedures which may be applied in idiom translation. This paper will first deal with the definitions of idioms. Such definitions are taken from well-known linguists, translators, scholars and dictionaries. In the next chapters it will explore the characteristics of idioms and their use. Following the classification of difficulties set out by Baker in In Other Words: A Coursebook on Translation, this paper endeavours to analyse and practically apply them largely for translation of English idioms and the equivalent Albanian pairs. The findings show that in order to translate idiomatic expressions as correctly as possible, a number of factors should be taken into consideration. By comparing how idioms pertaining to several European languages have been translated, we conclude that the translation of idioms and fixed expressions is possible and depends on the approach we consider to embrace towards the translation process
LITERATURE (LITERARY MATERIALS) ENRICHES LANGUAGE LEARNING SKILLS
Literary materials that give a boost for target language learning provide linguistic model, authenticity, motivation, convenience and linguistic competence through which a foreign language is likely to be learned properly. Therefore, teachers might benefit from literature of a target language in order to enhance students’ language learning skills such as; reading, writing, speaking, and listening in language classroom.
Teachers have enough freedom to choose the topics they will use in the class. Especially, teachers need to consider the materials, which increase the involvement of the students properly, since those materials give students courage to be active in the classroom and make them to be more confident in order to interact for the topics chosen by their teachers. Also, literature is considered the main source to make students creative, for the students experience properly literary usages in the literary materials, which involve samples of real life situations.
The qualitative and instructional approaches were utilized in order to clarify language learning skills with aid of literary material. First & secondary data and also the researcher’ personal views were taken into account in the present study. The study revealed that literature increases all language skills, since it extends linguistic knowledge through giving evidence of extensive and subtle vocabulary usage, and complex and exact syntax. It also gives students the opportunity to strengthen language skills more as it often considerably enables oral discussions and exchange of opinions.
This study demonstrated that literary materials firstly, provide opportunities of examples of “good” writing, linguistic diversity, expressive ranges, etc. Secondly, they give a scope for genuine linguistic material, thirdly, they motivate a learner genuinely not artificially, and lastly, they present a handy and photocopiable resource for teachers/students
THE IMPACT OF “A CITY UPON A HILL” ON SHAPING AMERICAN CULTURE AND VALUES
The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between Puritanism and American culture. It displays why this two cultures are often correlated with one another and the impact that Puritan culture have had on the other cultures. The importance of studying the Puritan legacy upon America is because it is crucial to understand the culture of a nation, thus to know and to understand the language of that nation. Therefore studying the influence of Puritanism in America makes it more facile to approach the language.
This religious group, which was influenced by religious and political upheavals of the Europe, especially England, of the seventeenth century, moves to the New World. They brought new ideas and a new manner of life. Their simple, religious life and their vision of the world would shape the standpoints of the New Continent. Values such as individualism, exceptionalism, the values of the self-s (self-reliance, self-improvement), and their attitudes towards hard work and education serve as the core values of America today.
Hence, this study makes an analogy of the same values being represented during seventeenth century Puritans and modern Americans. It describes the reflection of those values on American society and the changes, if there is any, that have these values have undergone through time. It draws the similarities between Protestant and American values
THE RECIPROCAL EFFECTS OF BOTH RESPONSIBILITY AND MOTIVATION IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING PROCESS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY
This study aims to analyze the significance of personal responsibility and its positive benefits and also its relations with motivation in foreign language learning environment. Particularly, responsibility enhances motivation and benefits from values and capabilities, since they are considered as central to what it means to learn in the life. In accordance with it, each individual has freedom how to consider his/her choices, behaviors, and actions in the life as
The study on personal responsibilities and motivation were taken into account to
demonstrate how these two features of foreign language learning process can help students take control of their own learning in order to become self-regulated learners. In this regard, self-regulated learning/learner (SRL) model based on social cognitive, cyclical, triadic, and multi-level models by Zimmerman (2001, 2002, 2008, 2011 & 2013) shed lights to explain the details of this article in terms of foreign language learning and the benefits of those models were added in the conclusion. The features of personal responsibility, motivation, cognition, and individual differences (capabilities) were presented in details in order to find out their
reciprocal relations, which cause positive outcomes in learning process.
Instructional approach was used to compare both responsibility & motivation also their reciprocal relations. As limitation, the study does not include any questionnaire and interview, only the first data, secondary data and the researcher’s individual views were used to explain the study. The study reveals that responsibility not only makes the ways for high level motivation also creates a positive atmosphere for both instructors and students in terms of fruitful outcomes. Actually, responsibilities cause the particular person to benefit from his/her
available abilities through self-control and self-regulation
Armenia, the Armenians: between memory and future
The article recalls how in 2015, the year of the centenary of the Armenian Genocide, important publications emerged, shedding a light on the incident that will be difficult to ignore. In particular, it was the archives of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, the Vatican Secret Archives and the Historical Archive of the Secretariat of State which offered up precious material for the knowledge of what was happening to Armenians in Turkey to Georges-Henri Ruyssen SJ. To the latter is owed a valuable and significant work of reconstruction undertaken over many years, and consisting of eight volumes. These contain letters written in Turkey by those in contact with the people, who with their own eyes saw what was happening, and who followed what was occurring with dismay. Their relationship with the territory and their direct experience are fundamental. The correspondences begin in the years 1894-1896, of which volume IV, ranging from 1908 to 1925, is drawn precisely from the Secret Vatican Archives(ASV) as well as the Historic Archives of the Secretariat of State, the Section for Relations with Territories (SS.RR.SS). The author also points out a small valuable contribution by Jewish intellectuals of the time, translated into Italian with the title Pro Armenia. She underlines how, immediately, some Jews tried to intervene, to stop the genocide, and to assist Armenians in various ways. Today, it is difficult to ignore what happened, to ignore and to reduce what historically is the first genocide of the twentieth century in Europe. An event which has been minimized and denied: whose effects are still being felt today, and which has left a trail at individual, family and social levels. Armenian terrorism, which has resulted in attacks and deaths in Turkey and elsewhere, derives from these negations. The same is the case for a strong nationalism still prevalent today in the Republic of Armenia, which is constrained by circumstances to adopt a defensive political stance and – out of necessity – to maintain good relations with Russia. We have to wish that, after those resounding acknowledgement of the genocide, Armenia will be able to look forward to a more serene future
