Case e sandali: Bernard Rudofsky dalle isole del Mediterraneo al mito dell'anonimo
La nota permanenza dell'architetto di formazione austroungarica Bernard Rudofsky nell'area del golfo di Napoli negli anni Trenta del XX secolo, la sua collaborazione con progettisti italiani (da Luigi Cosenza a Gio Ponti), lasciano intravvedere un interesse, condiviso con altri, per la produzione edilizia e per i manufatti locali legati alla tradizione. Quanto si sta delineando come un nuovo bacino di modelli formali, cui Rudofsky attinge con i suoi progetti per Procida, Capri e per la costa, trova la sua composizione teoretica, dopo aver raccolto altri elementi sia dal bacino del Mediterraneo sia dal sud America, nella mostra che Rudofsky cura al MoMA nel 1964, "Architecture without Architects". Il paper si propone di esplorare i rapporti tra il ruolo che Rudofsky ricopre nell'avvio del nuovo mito della mediterraneità e la definizione del progetto anonimo che costituisce uno degli aspetti di maggior interesse della sua opera in quanto progettista, direttore di riviste e catalizzatore della cultura progettuale nel secondo dopoguerra, soprattutto in nord America L'ipotesi è che questa sintesi sia favorita dall'incontro tra il "bagaglio" culturale e sentimentale che proviene dal sud Italia e la cultura progettuale statunitense, storicamente poco autoriale e legata, anche nell'architettura, alla produzione anonima
Event-Driven Energy Metering: Principles and Applications
Recent developments in smart metering applications have led to the conceptualization and construction of a new type of energy meter, operating on the basis of event-driven principles. The event-driven metering concepts are applied to represent the information on the electrical load patterns, which have an integral value. This paper explains why these concepts are different from the ones used for event-based applications in other domains, discusses the principles used in the new type of electricity meter, presents the data formats structured in such a way to provide detailed knowledge representation, and shows a number of results on real-case applications. A specific index is defined in order to represent the effectiveness of the event-driven metering scheme illustrated to represent the details of themetered pattern, comparing the results with the ones that could be reached in the most favorable case through regular timer-driven metering. The presentation of specific applications based on real-life datasets highlights the advantages of the event-driven energy metering over the traditional timer-driven metering scheme
"Tabula Rasa" planning: creative destruction and building a new urban identity in Tehran
The concept of Tabula Rasa, as a desire for sweeping renewal and creating a potential site for the construction of utopian dreams, is presupposition of Modern Architecture. Starting from the middle of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, Iranian urban and architectural history has been integrated with modernization, and western-influenced modernity. The case of Tehran as the Middle Eastern political capital is the main scene for the manifestation of modernity within it's urban projects that was associated with several changes to the social, political and spatial structure of the city. In this regard, the strategy of Tabula Rasa as a utopian blank slate upon which a new Iran could be conceived "over again" - was the dominant strategy of modernization during First Pahlavi era (1925-1941). This article explores the very concept of constructing a new image of Tehran through the processes of autocratic modernism and orientalist historicism that also influenced the discourse of national identity during First Pahlavi era

Aeroelastic Behaviour of Flexible Wings Carrying Distributed Electric Propulsion Systems
An accurate aeroelastic assessment of powered HALE aircraft is of paramount importance considering that their behaviour contrasts the one of conventional aircraft mainly due to the use of high aspect-ratio wings with distributed propulsion systems. This particular configuration shows strong dependency of the wing natural frequencies to the propulsion distribution and operating conditions. Numerical and experimental investigations are carried out to better understand the behaviour of flexible wings, focusing on the effect of distributed electric propulsion systems. Several configurations are investigated, including a single propulsion system using an engine pod (a weight with embedded electric motor, a propeller, and the wing-attached structure) installed at selected spanwise positions, and configurations with two and three propellers
Waste of the secondary glass waste (glass waste 3): new solutions for a sustainable industrial recovery
Nowadays glassy sand, obtained from the secondary waste of glass, is well accepted by glass factories. However, a plant producing this kind of secondary glass generates 3% of waste (glass waste 3) made of all the impurities usually present in glass waste. In particular, the materials not recovered are represented by ceramics, stones, magnetic and non-magnetic metals, paper, plastics, cork, synthetic corks etc., which are not always easily removable Glass waste 3 is therefore made of exploitable product fractions with different particle sizes and physical (such as density, shape and resistance) properties. This research is based on data collected from the SASIL plant, and is aimed at solving the issue of the waste of this kind of process implementing a pilot plant already present. Representative samples of feed material (glass waste 3) and of different products of the pilot plant have been characterized and laboratory tests were executed to improve separation efficiency and to valorise the different product fractions. A new treatment plant has been designed and economic evaluation has been made. The materials to be traded as secondary raw materials (SRM) - such as plastics, metals, synthetic and cork stoppers - are near 90% of the total feed of the plant
Swelling Rocks Investigation on Hydro Tunnels - A Comprehensive Characterization based on Laboratory Tests and Constitutive Models
Swelling of rocks is a common phenomenon in the Andean Region, due to the presence of volcano-sedimentary units containing clays, typically from the smectite group as part of the rock matrix. Hence, a comprehensive rock mass characterization has to be made in order to evaluate the risk of underground works located in this kind of geological environment. For hydro tunnels in South America, a set of swelling pressure tests of different type (on intact rock discs, ground rock powder, cyclic loading and triaxial tests) were executed for swelling potential evaluation. The results show that obtained values are highly dependent on test procedures, suggesting that swelling pressure test has to be considered as an index, instead of a definitive value of pressure (especially when using ground rock powder). A result comparison and discussion is included in this paper and recommendations for engineering design are provided based on numerical modelling
Investigation into the applicability of a passive upper-limb exoskeleton in automotive industry
The fourth industrial revolution faces the technological challenge of human-robot cooperation in manufacturing process. Aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and user's acceptance of a passive exoskeleton for upper limbs. Three different tests, involving static and dynamic tasks, were performed by 29 automotive operators without and with the exoskeleton. Main aspects and results of the testing campaign are presented in the paper. Potential issues associated to the introduction of these auxiliary devices in the automotive industry are briefly addressed, together with the open questions on how to assess the biomechanical workload risk, especially in the design phase
