Advanced structural models for numerical simulation of delamination in laminated structures

    No full text
The paper presents an efficient computational strategy to model delamination in laminated structures. The numerical framework is a class of refined beam models based on Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), a generalized hierarchical formulation which provides refined structural theories through a variable kinematic description. Within CUF, the governing equations are formulated in terms of fundamental nuclei, which remain independent of the choice of the structural theory and the finite element order. The Component-Wise approach (CW), a recent extension of one-dimensional CUF models, is utilized to model the laminates within the structure. Delamination is modelled using higher-order interface elements in combination with cohesive-zone models. The constitutive relation for the interface element is governed by the traction-separation law. A dissipation-based arc-length scheme is implemented within the CUF framework to trace the equilibrium path. The arc-length constraint introduced is based on the energy dissipated during the delamination process. The predictive capabilities of the proposed framework are assessed through benchmark delamination problems under quasi-static loading conditions. Results are compared against solutions from the analytical solution from literature. The applicability and computational efficiency of the proposed framework to capture the delamination growth are highlighted

On imitation dynamics in potential population games

    No full text
Imitation dynamics for population games are studied and their asymptotic properties analyzed. In the considered class of imitation dynamics — that encompass the replicator equation as well as other models previously considered in evolutionary biology — players have no global information about the game structure, and all they know is their own current utility and the one of fellow players contacted through pairwise interactions. For potential population games, global asymptotic stability of the set of Nash equilibria of the sub-game restricted to the support of the initial population configuration is proved. These results strengthen (from local to global asymptotic stability) existing ones and generalize them to a broader class of dynamics. The developed techniques highlight a certain structure of the problem and suggest possible generalizations from the fully mixed population case to imitation dynamics whereby agents interact on complex communication networks

Biochars as Innovative Humidity Sensing Materials

In this work, biochar-based humidity sensors were prepared by drop-coating technique. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was added as an organic binder to improve the adhesion of the sensing material onto ceramic substrates having platinum electrodes. Two biochars obtained from different precursors were used. The sensors were tested toward relative humidity (RH) at room temperature and showed a response starting around 5 RH%, varying the impedance of 2 orders of magnitude after exposure to almost 100% relative humidity. In both cases, biochar materials are behaving as p-type semiconductors under low amounts of humidity. On the contrary, for higher RH values, the impedance decreased due to water molecules adsorption. When PVP is added to SWP700 biochar, n-p heterojunctions are formed between the two semiconductors, leading to a higher sensitivity at low RH values for the sensors SWP700-10% PVP and SWP700-20% PVP with respect to pure SWP700 sensor. Finally, response and recovery times were both reasonably fast (in the order of 1 min)

Trade-off between sound insulation performance and cost-optimality in a residential nZEB

Until now, design of new high performance buildings has been focused on the en-ergy performance but lacks to be addressed as a holistic problem taking into account all the aspects of a performance of a building. This work strives to study and optimize at once, the energy performance of a building and the sound insulation performance of its facades. In particular, energy and acoustic performances of different building facades, made of two different wall types, were compared taking in account the cost-optimized design of a building. The proposed methodology couples a cost-optimization of the building energy model made though TRNSYS® and GenOpt, with an evaluation of the sound insulation indexes with Matlab®, and it was applied to a French single-family case study. The results show that the cost optimal energy performance level of such case study is somewhere between 40 and 47 kWh/m².year, while the sound insulation efficiency of the façade can reach a wide range of values. However, the proposed methodology allowed to highlight several design solutions fulfilling the requirements in term of energy, cost and acoustics performances
