Insights into the effects of occupant behaviour lifestyles and building automation on building energy use
In order to optimize building energy consumption, Member States will have to establish minimum efficiency requirements for systems, and promote the introduction of active control system in new constructions or major renovations. Energy saving, plant efficiency and environmental sustainability are also factors delineating smart buildings. Interestingly, occupant behaviour is known to be one of the key sources of uncertainty in the prediction of building energy use. The success of automation strategies is recognized to be dependent on how the occupants interact with the building. The present research describes the effect of different building occupants' lifestyles and building automation on a high performing building
SEISMIC RELIABILITY-BASED DESIGN OF PERFECTLY ELASTOPLASTIC STRUCTUTRES ISOLATED BY FPS
This paper deals with seismic reliability of nonlinear structural systems equipped with friction pendulum isolators (FPS). The isolated structures are described by employing an equivalent 2dof model characterized by a perfectly elastoplastic rule to account for the in-elastic response of the superstructure, whereas, the FPS behavior is described by a velocity dependent model. An extensive parametric study is carried out encompassing a wide range of elastic and inelastic building properties, different seismic intensity levels and considering the friction coefficient as a random variable. Employing a set of natural seismic records and scaled to the seismic intensity corresponding to life safety limit state for L'Aquila site (Italy) according to NTC08, the inelastic characteristics of the superstructures are designed as the ratio between the average elastic responses and increasing strength reduction factors. Incre-mental dynamic analyses (IDA) are developed to evaluate the seismic fragility curves of both the inelastic superstructure and the isolation level assuming different values of the corres-ponding limit states. Integrating the fragility curves with the seismic hazard curves related to L'Aquila site (Italy), the reliability curves of the equivalent inelastic base-isolated structural systems, with a design life of 50 years, are derived proposing seismic reliability-based design (SRBD) abacuses useful to define the FPS properties and superstructure properties
Digital Representation Techniques to Interpret, Communicate, and Share 20th c. Architectural Archives: The Case Study - Rosani's Archive
20th c. Architectural Archives are probably the latest and hugest collections of architectural documents on paper. Their conservation depends largely on the discovery, analysis, comprehension and interpretation of their value as Cultural Heritage. Today design documents produced by contemporary masters of Architecture, especially original drawings, are usually digitized and shared in the Web at scholars' disposal. The fate of the Archives that preserve the design drawings of minor architectures is completely different, so that the main motive of their safeguard has to be found in the recognition of their value as the testimony of a diffused architecture, significant to trace a framework of the building activity of their time. This is the case of the Archive of Industrial Architecture produced by Nino and Paolo Rosani, active in Turin up to 2010, for which a series of digital devices designed to enhance and communicate its most relevant content are being hypothesized
On the dual Craig-Bampton method for the forced response of structures with contact interfaces
Assembled structures are characterized by contact interfaces that introduce a local non-linearity and affect the dynamics of the assembly in terms of resonance frequencies and vibration levels. To assess the forced response levels of the assemblies during the design, nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed and, in order to reduce the computation time, spatial and temporal reductions of the governing equations must be used. A classical way to achieve temporal reduction is to implement the harmonic balance method to turn the time-domain differential governing equations into frequency-domain algebraic equations. Due to the local nature of contact interfaces, which usually involve a subset of degrees of freedom (dofs) of the structure, a common strategy to achieve spatial reduction is to use component mode synthesis (CMS), by retaining the contact dofs as master dofs. In this paper, a recent CMS approach, named dual Craig-Bampton method (Rixen in J Comput Appl Math, 2004. doi:10.1016/j.cam.2003.12.014), is applied to the nonlinear forced response of structures with contact interfaces. The spectral orthogonality of the two subsets of mode shapes used as a projection basis is exploited to write a set of algebraic equations of the contact dofs in the frequency domain, with no need to compute the reduced matrices of the system. Different formulations of the governing equations are proposed for different configurations (i.e., outer contacts, inner contacts and structures with floating components), and two academic numerical test cases are used to demonstrate the method

Quality indicators for the whole-journey experience
The METPEX tool was developed for the wider scientific and stakeholders' communities and essentially consists of a suite of surveying tools to measure the degree of satisfaction of travellers on a wealth of aspects related to their experience. However, there is a need to provide more immediate and ready-to-implement evaluation methods related to quality and accessibility issues in the transport system, and through the use of such tools, show their added value (Diana et al 2016). A set of indicators has therefore been defined to achieve the following goals: • Help policy makers to tailor measurement instruments to their needs by appropriately defining the extent of the quality evaluation exercise. • Summarise the information from the tool in a more meaningful way to improve communication among stakeholders, by giving a synthetic and quantitative evaluation on quality and accessibility-related issues from the traveller's perspective. • Benchmark the performances of the service, transport mode or journey phase under consideration from the viewpoint of specific users groups with the performances that were measured in the eight test sites
SEISMIC RELIABILITY ANALYSIS OF 3D NON-LINEAR BASE-ISOLATED STRUCTURES WITH FPS
The aim of the study consists in evaluating the seismic reliability and life-cycle costs of a reinforced concrete 3D system isolated by FPS bearings with different isolated periods in order to evaluate the potential benefits provided by increasing values of the isolation degree. Assuming the elastic response pseudo-acceleration related to each isolated period and the coefficient of friction as random variables relevant to the problem characterized by appropriate probability density functions, the Latin Hypercube Sampling method has been adopted as random sampling technique in order to define the input data. Several 3D non-linear dynamic analyses have been performed considering both the vertical and horizontal components of each seismic excitation in order to evaluate the system performance. Thus, bivariate structural performance curves for each story of the superstructure and for the substructure as well as seismic reliability-based design (SRBD) curves for the isolation level have been defined for the different values of the isolation degree. Finally, the life-cycle cost analysis of the isolated system with different curvature radius of the FP bearings has been accomplished taking into account both the initial costs and the expected loss costs, due to future earthquakes, of the overall system during its design life (50 years) in order to evaluate the influence of the isolation degree on both the seismic performance and the total costs
