A novel simplified multivariate PBE solution method for mass transfer problems
Interphase mass transfer estimation may require not only the accurate knowledge of the interfacial area, which depends on the information about the size of each dispersed element, but also on the driving force, that can be different if the elements of the disperse phase have different chemical composition. To take into account such polydispersity, bivariate (or multivariate) population balance model (PBM) are formulated according to physical phenomena occurring in the investigated mass transfer problem. This often includes aggregation, breakage, advection, mass transfer of the chemical species and chemical reactions of the transferring components. In this work we propose a novel and simplified method to solve the bivariate/multivariate population balance equation for a mass transfer problem, based on the high-order moment-conserving method of classes (HMMC) (Alopaeus et al., 2006). The proposed method is based on the idea of deriving additional material balance equations for the concentration of droplets belonging to each size class, reducing significantly the total number of unknown variables with respect to true bivariate/multivariate method of classes. This modeling approach is compared with two other possible solution methods for a test case in which mass transfer and chemical reactions occur in a system with two immiscible liquid phases. In the first the traditional approach is used, where a single material balance is formulated for the disperse phase along with PBM, while in the second a true bivariate/multivariate solution method is used. The results of this comparison show that the proposed method is robust and accurate, capable of properly describing the multidimensional droplet size-composition distribution needed to evaluate the mass transfer rates, in a fraction of computational time compared with more accurate methods
The basic technologies for ITS and their applications: the present and future of traffic and vehicle monitoring
The entire volume "Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS): Past, Present and Future Directions" introduces the reader to the fundamentals of the ITS. It provides an overview of their evolution, starting from the earliest experiments on the route guidance systems in the 70s to their current deployment, and discusses the main challenges to face for their future development. This chapter introduces the basic ITS technologies and related applications. The present and future of traffic and of single vehicle monitoring are described by means of an extensive analysis of the available devices and technologies; fixed and mobile sensors are illustrated, as is the possibility of integrating data obtained from them together with those collected through a diffused crowdsourcing of information. The overview of ITS technologies and their applications is presented from a world-wide and long-lasting perspective, even though many of the examples that have been mentioned within the chapter refer to European best practices; however, these could easily be deployed elsewhere
Start/Zooart Arca
Anodic Materials for Lithium-ion Batteries: TiO2-rGO Composites for High Power Applications
Titanium dioxide/reduced graphene oxide (TiO2-rGO) composites were synthesized at different loadings of carbonaceous phase, characterized and used as anode materials in Lithium-ion cells, focusing not only on the high rate capability but also on the simplicity and low cost of the electrode production. It was therefore chosen to use commercial TiO2, GO was synthesized from graphite, adsorbed onto TiO2 and reduced to rGO following a chemical, a photocatalytic and an in situ photocatalytic procedure. The synthesized materials were in-depth characterized with a multi-technique approach and the electrochemical performances were correlated i) to an effective reduction of the GO oxidized moieties and ii) to the maintenance of the 2D geometry of the final graphenic structure observed. TiO2-rGO obtained with the first two procedures showed good cycle stability, high capacity and impressive rate capability particularly at 10% GO loading. The photocatalytic reduction applied in situ on preassembled electrodes showed similarly good results reaching the goal of a further simplification of the anode production
Living and Thinking Nomadic Housing: Porta Palazzo Temporary Residence in Turin
Living: today it's often linked to temporariness; the current situation of the housing market, the need of finding housing for moving users or users in temporary housing emergency has caused the city of Turin and other institutions to think a model of Nomadic Housing that aims to be at the same time an experimentation of a new way of furnishing and living interiors and also a new way urban regeneration of areas strongly affected by social problems. Thinking: Interiors and Exhibit Design course at Politecnico of Torino tested a didactic formula to use common spaces of temporary residence as a communicative model of themes related to the area where the building is located and at the same time to induce greater sharing of common spaces through temporary exhibitions

The challenge for a new doctoral research assessment: research and dissemination quality
Dissemination and communication of research results can be con- sidered a speci c phase in the research process and, nowadays, they are also fundamental for the evaluation systems of research quality. The dissemination quality of research results sometimes seems even more important than the research itself. The contribution proposes some re ections on the correlation be- tween research quality and quality of dissemination of research results
