3D MODELS FOR ALL: LOW-COST ACQUISITION THROUGH MOBILE DEVICES IN COMPARISON WITH IMAGE BASED TECHNIQUES. POTENTIALITIES AND WEAKNESSES IN CULTURAL HERITAGE DOMAIN
Nowadays, 3D digital imaging proposes effective solutions for preserving the expression of human creativity across the centuries, as well as is a great tool to guarantee global dissemination of knowledge and wide access to these invaluable resources of the past. Nevertheless, in several cases, a massive digitalisation of cultural heritage items (from the archaeological site up to the monument and museum collections) could be unworkable due to the still high costs in terms of equipment and human resources: 3D acquisition technologies and the need of skilled team within cultural institutions. Therefore, it is necessary to explore new possibilities offered by growing technologies: the lower costs of these technologies as well as their attractive visual quality constitute a challenge for researchers. Besides these possibilities, it is also important to consider how information is spread through graphic representation of knowledge. The focus of this study is to explore the potentialities and weaknesses of a newly released low cost device in the cultural heritage domain, trying to understand its effective usability in museum collections. The aim of the research is to test their usability, critically analysing the final outcomes of this entry level technology in relation to the other better assessed low cost technologies for 3D scanning, such as Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques (also produced by the same device) combined with dataset generated by a professional digital camera. The final outcomes were compared in terms of quality definition, time processing and file size. The specimens of the collections of the Civic Museum Castello Ursino in Catania have been chosen as the site of experimentation
Effect of Solution Treatment on Precipitation Behaviors, Age Hardening Response and Creep Properties of Elektron21 Alloy Reinforced by AlN Nanoparticles
In the present study, the solution and ageing treatments behavior of Mg-RE-Zr-Zn alloy (Elektron21) and its nano-AlN reinforced nanocomposites have been evaluated. The properties of the thermal-treated materials were investigated in terms of Vickers hardness, the area fraction of precipitates, microstructure and phase composition. The solution treatments were performed by treating at 520 ◦C, 550 ◦C and 580 ◦C in argon atmosphere. The outcomes show that the hardness of the solutionized alloys was slightly affected by the solution temperature. X-ray diffraction and image analysis revealed that the complete dissolution of precipitates was not possible, neither for Elektron21 (El21) nor for its AlN containing nanocomposites. The ageing treatment of El21 led to a significant improvement in hardness after 20 h, while for longer times, it progressively decreased. The effect of ageing on the hardness of El21-AlN composites was found to be much less than this effect on the hardness of the host alloy. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis of El21 and El21-1%AlN after solution treatment confirm the random orientation of grains with a typical texture of random distribution. The as-cast creep results showed that the incorporation of nanoparticles could effectively improve the creep properties, while the results after solution treatment at 520 ◦C for 12 h followed by ageing treatment at 200 ◦C for 20 h confirmed that the minimum creep rate of T6-El21 was almost equal to the as-cast El21-AlN
Domain Wall Interconnections for NML
NanoMagnet Logic is one of the most novel solutions studied as complementary technology to CMOS transistors. Information propagation involves only a change in spin orientation, no charge movement is present. Since the basic element is a nanomagnet, NML circuits have no stand-by power consumption and the ability to mix logic and memory in the same device. While CMOS is a multilayer technology, until now NML is confined to one single physical layer. The consequence is that circuit area grows exponentially due to interconnections overhead. In this paper we present an innovative solution that drastically reduces the area wasted for interconnection wires relying on the properties of Domain Walls (DWs). We mix DWs and NML technologies in a unique Doman Wall Logic (DWL) solution that exploits the advantages of both technologies. The proposed solution is technologically compatible with up-to-date fabrication processes. All the results here presented for the NML logic blocks and the DWs interconnections and their combination are obtained through rigorous micromagnetic simulations. Moreover, we implemented as a case study an high performance adder (Pentium-4 Adder) and evaluated its features with increasing parallelism and compared to the simple NML implementation in order to explore the potential of DWL technology at circuit and architectural level. The reduction in circuit area corresponds to a notable reduction in both latency and power consumption. The improvements in NML technology are shown by both the remarkable performance improvement and new possibilities offered by this novel solution
Assessing Social and Territorial Vulnerability on Real Estate Submarkets
The concept of social vulnerability is widely studied in literature in order to identify particularly socially fragile sectors of the population. For this purpose, several studies have adopted indexes to measure the economic and social conditions of the population. The aim of this paper is to investigate the link between social and territorial vulnerability and the real estate market, by means of an exploratory analysis related to the possibility that spatial analyses can help to identify spatial latent components and variables in the process of price determination. A three phase approach is proposed, using the geographical segmentation of Turin and its related submarkets as a case study. After the identification and analysis of a set of three social and territorial vulnerability indicators, a traditional hedonic approach was applied to measure their influence on property listing prices. Subsequently, spatial analyses were investigated to focus on the spatial components of the indicators and property prices; their spatial autocorrelation was measured and the presence of spatial dependence was taken into account by applying a spatial regression. Results demonstrated that two indicators were spatially correlated with property prices and had a significant and negative influence on them. The proposed approach may help not only to identify the most vulnerable urban areas characterized by the lowest property prices, but also to support the future modification to the actual geographical segmentation of Turin
Temperature fluctuations in numerical simulations of particle-laden isotropic turbulence with two-way coupling
The two-way coupling between fluid and particle temperature fluctuations in forced steady isotropic turbulence is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations with sub-Kolmogorov inertial particle Lagrangian tracking. The aim is to determine the sensitivity of the temperature field statistics to the presence of particles, parametrized by the Stokes number (St) and the thermal Stokes number (Stθ). As shown by Béc et al. PRL, 2014), the inertia of particles enhances mixing and heat transfer because particles cluster in regions of sharp temperature gradients out of the Lagrangian coherent structures. This trend strongly affects the small-scale dynamics of the temperature field and the dissipation rate of the temperature variance. Moreover, in presence of a two-way coupling, the finite mass and heat capacity of particles allows them to carry temperature increments across the scales of the flow influencing the temperature statistics at all scales. The resulting non trivial behavior is highlighted by means of two-particle statistics and two-point statistics of the temperature field
A Simple Multibody 2d-model for Early Postural Checks in Workplace Design
Posture prediction is one of the most important aspects of virtual modeling tools used for the workplace design: once the work point to reach is defined, the posture prediction module allows simulating, through inverse kinematics, the posture the operator is likely to assume. The paper presents a simple multibody 2D-model created for early postural checks in the design phase. The tool is a spreadsheet created in Microsoft Excel environment, with the support of Visual Basic. The principal output of the model in terms of angles of trunk bending and upper arm elevation, set in compliance with the technical standards, are compared to the results of an established software tool for ergonomic analyses, the 3D Static Strength Prediction Program (3DSSPP). Finally, possible differences in terms of moments on the L5/S1 and the shoulder joints introduced by the simplified kinematics of the 2D manikin are discussed
