11.09: Validation of probabilistic theory of plastic mechanism control by means of Monte Carlo simulations

    No full text
This work aims at the validation of the Probabilistic Theory of Plastic Mechanism Control (P-TPMC), reported in a companion paper, by means of Monte Carlo simulations. P-TPMC is devoted to stochastic frames with the aim to assure a collapse mechanism of global type despite of the influence of random material variability. A mechanism of global type develops when all the beams are yielded at their ends while the columns remain in elastic range with the only exception of the base sections of the first storey columns. A parametric analysis is performed considering steel moment resisting frames having different number of bays and different number of storeys. Moreover, in order to achieve a predefined level of reliability in the attainment of the design goal, the parametric analysis is also repeated for increasing values of an overstrength factor of the dissipative zones aiming to its calibration. Finally, a quadratic regression has been derived to provide a simple relationship to compute the value of the overstrength factor needed to include the influence of random material variability in the application of deterministic Theory of Plastic Mechanism Control

WeBrowse: Leveraging User Clicks for Content Discovery in Communities of a Place

    No full text
One of the limits of web content discovery tools, let them be recommender systems or content curation tools such as social rating, social bookmarking and other social media, is the scarcity of user input (e.g. rate, submit, share). This problem is even worse in the case of what we call communities of a place: people who study, live or work at the same place. Such people often share common interests but either do not know each other or fail to actively engage in submitting and relaying information. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of using the aggregated clicks of entire communities of users to passively emulate a content curation service a la Reddit. To this end, we prototype and deploy WeBrowse, a content curation service based on the processing of raw HTTP logs. Evaluation based on our deployments demonstrates feasibility at scale while respecting user privacy. The majority of WeBrowse's users welcome the quality of content it promotes

Approximate Arai DCT Architecture for HEVC

    No full text
his work describes an approximate DCT architecture for the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. Since the standard requires to support multiple block sizes, architectures based on exact implementation require a relevant amount of hardware resources, namely multipliers and adders. This work aims to reduce the amount of hardware resources while keeping the rate-distortion performance nearly optimal. To achieve this goal, this work exploits an exact factorization of the DCT of size N = 8, which is then extended to obtain approximate DCTs of size N = 16 and N = 32. Simulation and implementation results prove that the proposed approximate solution features a complexity reduction with respect to exact one of more than 43% with an average rate-distortion performance loss of 4.74% for the worst-case (all-intra) configuration

Particle Swarm Optimization of Electromagnetic Data with Parallel Computing in the 2D Case

    No full text
This work presents the application to electromagnetic data processing of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, with the advantage of its high speed of convergence to the problem solution compared with other evolutionary methods. We focus on the inversion of MT synthetic data in the two-dimensional case. The PSO problem is solved complying with upper and lower bounds and a priori information, which is initially given only to a small amount of particles of the swarm. The fitness function is properly defined including smoothing parameter (Occam's razor). Since it is a computationally demanding problem, a practical tool of parallel computing is tested and validated, thus allowing large computation time savings. Results show encouraging outcomes in terms of minimization of fitness function and data fitting. This approach represents the starting point for the 2D PSO application to MT data, Audio Magneto Telluric data and other near surface applications implying two-dimensional interpretation

A Four-pages Saga. An Attempt at Graphical Analysis of the Transformation of les Halles in the Late 20th Century, with Some Implications

    No full text
Is it possible to represent exhaustively the design scales (Revel, 2006) of a thirty-years long urban transformation in just one scheme? Is it possible to consider such a thick description (Geertz, 1973) as autonomous and analytically useful? The following scheme is an attempt to explore the answers at these questions through an overview of the Paris's les Halles saga during the Seventies and the Eighties, as a result of a three-year research

UAV-based method for the sensitivity measurement on low-frequency receiving systems

    No full text
One of the most important requirements for the astronomical Low-Frequency Aperture Arrays (LFAAs) is the high sensitivity, defined as the ratio between the effective area and the system noise temperature. This figure of merit is strictly related to the single element sensitivity, which is difficult to measure using astronomical sources. On the other hand, the characterization of a low-frequency antenna inside an anechoic chamber is not straightforward down to 50 MHz. In this contribution a novel method to measure the sensitivity of a single LFAA receiving chain is presented. The proposed technique utilizes a micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicle equipped with a RF test source. A preliminary error budget analysis demonstrated that this technique is able to measure the sensitivity of a LFAA chain with high accuracy
