Enhancing the Student Experience: Simulation-based Learning in the MBA Classroom
Business schools use computer-based simulations to teach students strategic decision-making skills in the context of real-world applications. Simulations fit well into the student-centered classroom where students take responsibility for their own learning and the professor offers guidance throughout. While much research focuses on students’ perceptions of simulations as well as the measurable student learning outcomes that result from their use, little research exists on the evolution of students’ mindsets as they move through the various rounds of a long-form simulation. This study documents the phases and shifts in students’ self-efficacy and confidence as they work to successfully complete a complex, multi-round computer simulation in the context of a graduate business course. The results show a gradual but distinct pattern of improvement in the students’ beliefs in their decision-making abilities, a dissipation of anxiety, the displacement of extrinsic motivations by intrinsic ones, and an increase in students’ overall confidence
Sustainability in Business: Developing an Undergraduate Business Course
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rationale and process of creating a new course focused on business sustainability in the University’s Department of Business Administration. Currently, the University offers just one business sustainability course, delivered once every two years as a January study-abroad course in Chile. While an outstanding experience, a limited number of students can take advantage of the opportunity. After identifying this gap in our business programs, we created a stand-alone course that focuses on business sustainability. This paper addresses the following questions: What is the business case for adding the course? What should the learning goals and outcomes be? After an extensive review of business needs and existing program offerings, the authors created a new course: BUSI 2000: Sustainability through a Business Lens. The course framework includes: developing an understanding of business ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focusing on social justice; exploring the triple bottom line framework (TBL); gaining a deeper understanding of business sustainability through experiential learning; and understanding the connections between setting strategic priorities and measuring the success of sustainability initiatives
