The cost of climate change on women

    No full text
Background: Climate change-induced crises can aggravate gender-based violence; the loss of income when weather affects the agricultural industry can exacerbate violence at home. In Kenya, the effect of climate change on weather patterns has led to increased precipitation and temperature. These weather changes lead to more intense flooding during the rainy seasons and droughts during the dry season. For 75% of Kenyans, agricultural activities are their primary source of income. With 98% of agriculture depending on rainfall, the change in weather patterns has provided farmers with a challenge when timing the planting and harvesting of crops. The aim of this research is to assess patterns in domestic violence (DV) and severe weather events (SWE) over a 6-year period in Kenya. Methods:We examined IPUMS-DHS data from 2008, and 2014 for DV severity and frequency. We used EM-DAT data along with GPS coordinates to identify SWEs (defined as any drought or flood \u3e 10 days) by county in Kenya in the year of DV data collection. We conducted a logistic regression using a mixed effects model grouped by 8 counties in Kenya. We also evaluated whether changes in weather in each county in the two years leading up to DV data collection is associated with an increase in domestic violence. All analyses were controlled for rural/urban residence, husband drinking status, husband working in agriculture. Findings:We identified a significant association between weather patterns and reporting DV. Having a partner who worked in agriculture increased the odds of reporting domestic violence (OR = 1.2, 95% CI: 1.1-1.3). The odds of reporting experiences of DV were 1.4 times greater in areas that experienced a major flood (OR = 1.4, 95% CI: 1.3-1.6). We also noted an increase in odds of reporting experiences of DV in areas that reported an increase in floods as compared to areas where no floods occurred (OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.4-1.9). The association between severe flooding and DV warrants a deeper look how changing weather patterns affect DV worldwide. Interpretation:Climate action is an essential component in the ongoing fight to eliminate violence against women and girls. This analysis adds to the urgency of addressing action to stop environmental degradation, action to stop gender-based violence, and demonstrate that the two issues often need to be addressed together

Implementing an escape room - A puzzling process

Implementing an escape room: A puzzling process Educators are continually challenged to engage students in the learning process and implement active learning strategies. One method is to utilize a game-based activity. Game-based learning strategies are an active learning method which motivates students, promotes collaboration, and provides immediate feedback. Objectives from various cognitive domain levels are met through games. One game-based strategy that promotes the application of learner knowledge is an escape room. Escape room participants solve sets of challenges as a team to complete an over-all goal. Teamwork and communication are needed, in addition to critical thinking skills. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss development, implementation, and evaluation of an escape room student learning activity. An escape room begins with a narrative and clues which initiate the first challenge. Each challenge feeds sequentially to the next. The solution of one challenge may provide a clue such as a numeric key unlocking a padlock or a code to open a computer file. The challenges may be within the same room, or the clues may lead the players to a new location. Final task completion results in finishing the challenges and achieving the established objectives. A well-designed escape room activity promotes teamwork and attainment of student learning outcomes. First-time implementation of an escape room can be a daunting task for an educator though. Through presentation, discussion, and small group work, educators will be guided through the planning process to promote successful implementation and evaluation of an escape room in their nursing curriculum

Impacts of Discourse on Algebra Achievement, Higher-Order Thinking, and Student Efficacy at the Secondary Level

    Get PDF
This study explores the impacts of small-group discourse on an eighth-grade algebra course. Participants of the study are 31 eighth grade students in an urban charter school. Data was collected using pre- and post-assessments, observational tracking, classroom discourse rubric, and student journaling. Data was collected over eight weeks. Results showed growth in assessment scores using pre- and post-assessments. There was an increase in class participation, observed through anecdotal notes. Also, using a discourse rubric, student groups increased their scores on questioning and evaluating mathematical concepts. Discourse will continue to be used to improve mathematical understanding and student efficacy. Weekly discourse will continue to be held to observe if the results of this study, conducted remotely, will be comparable to a similar study that is conducted through in-person learning

The Impacts of Peer to Peer Collaboration on Science Self-Efficacy Among 8th-Grade Students

This action research project focused on determining the effects peer-to-peer collaboration has on 8th-grade students in a middle school science classroom. The intervention took place over six weeks in two classrooms, whose learning models changed between hybrid and distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021. For this study, researchers collected data through a pre and post-intervention science self-efficacy questionnaire and digital journal, and twice-weekly exit tickets. The results showed that the peer-to-peer model of collaboration implemented in this study increases student self-efficacy significantly, with girls having the most significant increase in self-efficacy. Researchers concluded that this model is an effective tool for supporting self-efficacy growth in the 8th-grade science classroom. Based on the results of this study, the researchers recommend implementing regular peer collaboration, teaching collaboration skills to support effective communication, and increasing the practice of self-reflection for students and teachers. Further research is needed to address how adding hands-on activities would affect self-efficacy and why female BIPOC students did not show the same levels of growth as their peers

Evaluating the Impact of Mindfulness-Based Practices on Nursing Students’ Perceived Stress Levels

    Get PDF
Undergraduate nursing students report high levels of stress associated with academia and multiple life responsibilities. This quality-improvement pilot project sought to evaluate the outcomes of focused breathing sessions and the use of a Nursing Process Self-Care Plan (NPSCP) Bookleton students\u27 perceived stress levels. The Transpersonal Care Theory facilitated the implementation of holistic student-centered classroom-based strategies. Fourteen students from a first-semester nursing course completed the pre-and post-test Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) survey and digital narrative questionnaires (DNQ). Descriptive and inferential statistics appraise the results from the PSS survey. Data from the DNQ were examined for patterns. Overall, the project findings support nursing students\u27 perceived stress levels were lowered. Students\u27 stress management strategies were captured under four categories: mindful inquiry, movement breaks, passive pauses, and cognitive events. Students identified that the focused breathing and journaling in the NPSCP Booklet as helpful stress reduction tools

“Of the Utmost Importance” A Study of Followers and Followership

    Get PDF
Abstract In most research, scholarly writings, and popular literature about leadership, it is presented as a given that there must be followership to achieve leadership outcomes. However, followership scholarship significantly trails its leadership counterparts; what does exist either attempts to define or describe followership or discusses it only in relation to leadership outcomes. Very little centers on how the person in the follower role experiences followership and even less on defining a theory of followership. The purpose of this research is to add to the knowledge of followership as an intentional act that can build skills and create opportunities. A qualitative study of workers or members of organizations aged 18-40 endeavors to discover how followers understand and evaluate their own experience working or acting in a follower role, with special attention paid to their understanding of followership and how they describe its significance. A survey of both closed- and open-ended questions provided opportunities to analyze responses by participant category; the most interesting finding was the differences in construction and effectiveness by those who “mostly lead” and those who “mostly follow.” The value of followership to organizations and individuals was affirmed, and followership was defined in active, intentional ways

This action research project studied how student-created formative assessments in mathematics would affect student confidence and perceived math ability. Students participated in a four-week study. The researcher conducted this study in September and October of 2021. The seven participating students were from an Upper Elementary classroom in a private Southern California Montessori school. The intervention consisted of a student-constructed survey taken weekly and a group analysis of the anonymized data collected from the said survey. Additional data sources included parent surveys, end-of-intervention student surveys, and classwork observational tally sheets. This study found that students gained further awareness of their work choices by completing the student-constructed formative assessments and reviewing the data. In the future, educators could conduct further research regarding the impact of using student-created formative assessment long-term and with a wider variety of subject
