Seeking A Pedagogy of Honesty
No full textWith multiple cultural, academic, and religious forces urging students and faculty to default to varying degrees of academic and personal dishonesty, we need to seriously consider how the structures we implement as educators can either reinforce or undermine those urges. After briefly considering some of the varieties of academic dishonesty we face in our religion and theology classrooms, this essay proposes one alternative model for a flow of communication that short-circuits usual expectations and encourages an ethos of honest participation. The proposed solution, called a Discussion Plan, represents an attempt to make the classroom’s center of gravity the honest questions, honest observations, honest confusions, honest exasperations that are uniquely relevant to the actual students of the particular class. This intentional dismantling of regimes of dishonesty with a pedagogy of honesty requires vulnerability and the hard work of active engagement but pays off with richer student participation and creativity

Supporting Self-Efficacy Toward Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Skills in Secondary Students
Get PDFThe purpose of this action research project was to investigate the effects of intentional teaching strategies of problem-solving skills on student’s self-efficacy toward Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subject areas. The research was set in two secondary classrooms while in a virtual environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants included 36 students who spanned between 6th and 11th grade. Over four weeks, students participated in virtual synchronous activities in different areas of STEM. Throughout the research, pre and post-questionnaires, exit surveys, field notes, and open-ended reflection questions were collected, as well as virtual attendance data. Though consistent survey participation was a challenge, students did report an increase in positive feelings about STEM throughout the study. Further research is needed on how problem-solving skills are successfully taught in a virtual setting
Decreasing the Cost of Surgery: A Standardized Process and Decision Tool to Evaluate Surgical Supplies
Get PDFPurpose: Management of disposable sterile supplies and implants is an opportunity to ensure quality patient care at an acceptable cost for both the patient and the organization. It is essential to have the right supplies available and reduce the economic and environmental waste for every patient without compromising the quality of care. This project aims to standardize the workflow for evaluating surgical supplies and reduce expired supplies.
Problem: In the pediatric operating room (OR) population, would a standardized process and decision support tool to review disposable sterile surgical supplies compared to the current unstandardized process result in fewer expired supplies and increased savings for the organization?
Approach: This project sought to develop a standardized process for collecting information on expired surgical supplies and a decision support tool. The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle was utilized as a framework to guide the project through several cycles and refinements of the process and tool, culminating with building the decision support tool into the value management software (VAMS).
Results: The organization loses approximately 10,000 or 10% of ongoing operational costs for surgical supplies during the project\u27s pilot.
Conclusion: This quality improvement project resulted in an objective and consistent decision-making tool and process to evaluate disposable sterile surgical supplies
Nursing Students Are More Than Just “Broke College Kids”
Get PDFCollege students face many challenges within the classroom as a key component of their growth. However, a background of poverty, housing, and/or food insecurity places higher education students at risk for course failure, attrition, and delayed or non-achievement of career goals. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (McPherson et al, 2021) reports more students from disadvantaged backgrounds are entering post-secondary healthcare education programs, but this increase is not reflected in completion rates. Previous studies have shown financial hardships and negative academic outcomes can be overcome through mentoring. To determine the effectiveness of faculty mentoring for students from poverty, mentors who navigated from poverty and into nursing were matched with self-enrolled students who receive Pell grant funding. Pre-surveys were administered to gauge the student’s perceived levels of psycho-economic factors: going to classes, sleep, physical activity, proper nutrition, connection, centering, and financial concerns. Then they met with their mentors, who helped them develop strategies to succeed in courses and address these areas. The work was intended to increase course success and negate course failures and attrition. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was terminated before completion. Some of the data gathered from the students during the self-selection process indicated the scope of the project was too narrow, and a financial qualifier may not be warranted. Instead, future projects should look at more factors than financial aid, such as previous academic progress, other educational inequity sources, and student psycho-social concerns to decrease course failure and attrition
