    Builder-Blocker general position games

    This paper considers a game version of the general position problem in which a general position set is built through adversarial play. Two players in a graph, Builder and Blocker, take it in turns to add a vertex to a set, such that the vertices of this set are always in general position. The goal of Builder is to create a large general position set, whilst the aim of Blocker is to frustrate Builder's plans by making the set as small as possible. The game finishes when no further vertices can be added without creating three-in-a-line and the number of vertices in this set is the game general position number. We determine this number for some common graph classes and provide sharp bounds, in particular for the case of trees. We also discuss the effect of changing the order of the players

    Business continuity, bureaucratic resilience and the limitations of neoliberal survival logics in international organisations

    This article contends that investigating relationalities between business continuity management, staff behaviours and bureaucratic resilience advances understandings of IO survival. Drawing on in-depth interviews, a global staff survey and a discourse analysis of UN reports and applying a postcolonial feminist theoretical approach to the study of IOs, the article examines how the UN Secretary-General’s Alternative Working Arrangements directive to close physical offices and open ‘virtual offices’ was implemented in the first 18 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is contended that business continuity management is necessary for IO survival since if the IO bureaucracy is unable to be productive and maintain its spheres of influence during a crisis, it risks losing power and authority. Between March 2020 and August 2021, staff facilitated IO survival organically, from the bottom-up in four ways: demonstrating good performance and productivity; being adaptable and resilient; maintaining personal spheres of influence and building communities of care within the UN. However, the UN’s neoliberal, technocratic approach to business continuity and bureaucratic resilience-building neglected staff care needs. Consequently, IO survival is predicated on staff performing as exploited gendered and racialised ‘neoliberal subjects’, revealing a chronic structural crisis rooted in the UN bureaucracy’s hierarchical composition and unequal employment regime

    Creative Pedagogies in school

    This chapter updates Cremin and Chappell’s (2019) creative pedagogies systematic literature review focusing on studies between 2019 and 2024. The methodology followed the original study protocols, searching four major research databases using the same terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria. Following rigorous critical reading and discussion around quality and relevance, 14 new papers remained for further analysis. During this process six of the original seven features were identified: generating and exploring ideas; encouraging autonomy and agency; problem-solving; risk-taking; co-constructing and collaborating; and teacher creativity. Playfulness was not evident. The significance of the manifestation of the features and their occurrence patterns are discussed. An example is also provided of the creative pedagogies in action within the Penryn Creativity Collaboratives initiative, where all the features and more are evidenced within a framework of action research projects which were collated within an overarching research study; a model which demonstrates positive implications for teacher ownership. Whilst the chapter suggests impact is still difficult to track, it offers significant new insights into creative pedagogies particularly in relation to risk-taking, assessment, dialogue, metacognition and skills, showing that internationally progress continues to be made in rigorously articulating and practicing creative pedagogies as an important element of current formal schooling

    Conceptualizing and measuring violence: A feminist critical measurement analysis of gender-based violence research in a government policy-based setting

    Feminist methodological advances in gender-based violence research have yet to be comprehensively integrated into policy-based research. This article discusses methodological concerns identified when reviewing the UK government’s public consultation for its 2021 Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy. We apply intersectional feminist perspectives and critical measurement analysis, and discuss two areas of methodological concern: Issues with conceptualisations of violence, and issues with the measurement of public experiences, attitudes, and opinions, and implications for the accuracy of the survey. In response, we consider feminist research practices that could address these issues and support feminist goals in policy-based gendered violence research

    Policymaking and developments towards governance in green infrastructure design: the case of Taipei city

    Green infrastructure (GI) has emerged as a key component in urban resilience strategies for integrating ecological and social benefits. Initially driven by government bodies, GI initiatives have expanded to include different groups of participants in co-production and co-implementation. This study proposes that Taipei's GI governance is determined by formal and informal regulations and connected with other discourses. The policy arrangement approach (PAA) is therefore used to study actor roles, discourses' effects on institutional arrangements, and GI planning issues. By assessing existing strategies and interactions among key actors, the study identifies how shifts in community participation and government authority shape GI design and functionality. The use of PAA in Taipei also offers valuable insights for global cities engaged in similar initiatives and challenges encountered in GI delivery. Findings demonstrate that participatory and collaborative approaches to governance of open spaces and greenspace are aggressively promoted and support communities in developing stewardship capabilities, but also that these alone are unlikely to be transformative without alternative funding mechanisms in the future. Overall, the participatory approach emphasises transparency and accountability for residents, however, new financial schemes are required to carry on GI design and management in the long term

    The folk that make the nation: The cultural associations of the wassail imagined in English news media from 1980 to 2024

    Wassailing, the toasting to the good health of the orchard, has become a popular annual custom occurring each January and February over the last 20 years across the UK. As a ‘folk’ event, it has resisted commercialisation and is often organised at a community level thereby ensuring a locally contingent and diverse experience for those attending. The article explores the representation of these community events in local and national newspapers from 1980 to 2024 and how a changing social and cultural context is reflected in the characterisation and reporting of wassailing: Care for the orchards becomes care for the environment; community renewal of a village and workforce become individual renewal and escape from globalised, digital worlds in corporeal and shared activities with strangers; an alcohol-fuelled, serious and adulterated affair for the farm labourers where the ‘virgin’ is placed in a tree becomes an urban, middle-class and family friendly event that reconnects with nature. A milieu of local and diverse practices in wassailing become a set of national-cultural values and a resistance against global politicising and dominating narratives. The article further argues that the exoticisation of wassailing as ‘paganistic’ and ‘ancient’ is re-appropriated into an eccentric element of British and English national and regional identities

    Anatomy of Empirical Transit Spectra of Mars Based on TGO/NOMAD

    Transit spectroscopy is a powerful tool for probing atmospheric structures of exoplanets. Accurately accounting for the effects of aerosols is key to reconstructing atmospheric properties from transit spectra, yet this remains a significant challenge. To advance this effort, it is invaluable to examine the spectral features of well-characterized planetary atmospheres. Here, we synthesize empirical transit spectra of Mars across different seasons based on data from the NOMAD’s Solar Occultation channel on board ExoMars/TGO, which operates at wavelengths of 0.2–0.65 and 2–4 μm. In the generated empirical transit spectra, the atmosphere below 25 km is found to be largely opaque due to the presence of micron-sized dust and H2O ice clouds, both of which substantially weaken spectral features. The spectra exhibit CO2 absorption features at 2.7–2.8 μm and signatures of submicron-sized mesospheric H2O ice clouds around 3.1 μm, accompanied by a continuum slope. The amplitudes of these spectral features are found to vary with the Martian seasons, where the dust storms weaken the CO2 signatures and strengthen the H2O ice features, which serve as potential indicators of a dusty planet like Mars. If TRAPPIST-1f possessed a Mars-like atmospheric structure, both CO2 and H2O ice features would be detectable at a noise level of 3 ppm, a level likely beyond current observational capabilities. Nevertheless, the 3.1 μm feature produced by submicron-sized mesospheric H2O ice clouds offers a novel avenue for characterizing the atmospheres of habitable-zone exoplanets

    Ten common misconceptions about Galaxy (and why they are wrong!)

    Galaxy is a widely used open-source platform for accessible, reproducible, transparent and scalable data analysis in the life sciences and beyond. Despite its growing adoption across domains, several misconceptions persist about its scope, usability, scalability and relevance to academia and industry. In this manuscript, we identify and address 10 common misconceptions about Galaxy, ranging from the belief that it is limited to genomics, lacks scalability, or is only useful for teaching, to doubts about its ability to support secure data analysis or maintain high software quality as a free and open-source project. We refute each misconception with present evidence based on Galaxy’s technical features, real-world use cases, user communities and governance structures. We show that Galaxy is a mature and versatile platform capable of supporting cutting-edge scientific research, education and even clinical workflows across a wide variety of disciplines. By clarifying existing misconceptions, we aim to help researchers, educators, developers and decision-makers better appreciate Galaxy’s capabilities and potential within their fields

    Euclid : Early Release Observations – The star cluster systems of the Local Group dwarf galaxies IC 10 and NGC 6822

    Star clusters are valuable indicators of galaxy evolution, offering insights into the buildup of stellar populations across cosmic time. Understanding the intrinsic star cluster populations of dwarf galaxies is particularly important given these systems’ role in the hierarchical growth of larger systems. We use data from Euclid ’s Early Release Observation programme to study star clusters in two star-forming dwarf irregular galaxies in the Local Group, NGC 6822 and IC 10 [ M ⋆ ~ (1–4) × 10 8 M ⊙ ]. With Euclid , star clusters are resolved into individual stars across the main bodies and haloes of both galaxies. Through visual inspection of the I E images, we uncover 30 new star cluster candidates in NGC 6822 and 16 in IC 10, ranging from compact to diffuse extended clusters. We compile and re-evaluate previously identified literature candidates, resulting in final combined catalogues of 52 (NGC 6822) and 71 (IC 10) cluster candidates with confidence-based classifications. We present homogeneous photometry in I E , Y E , J E , and H E , and in archival UBVRI data, alongside size measurements and properties derived from the spectral energy distribution fitting code BAGPIPES . Through synthetic cluster injection, we conclude our sample is ~50% complete to M ≲ 10 3 M ⊙ for ages ≲100 Myr, and to M ≲ 2 × 10 4 M ⊙ for ages of ~10 Gyr. We find that IC 10 has more young clusters than NGC 6822, and its young clusters extend to higher masses, consistent with its starburst nature. We find several old massive (≳10 5 M ⊙ ) clusters in both dwarfs, including an exceptional cluster in NGC 6822’s outskirts with a mass of 1.3 × 10 6 M ⊙ , nearly twice as massive as any other old cluster in either galaxy. In NGC 6822, we also identify a previously undetected, old, and extended cluster ( R h = 12.4 ± 0.11 pc). Using well-defined criteria, we identify 11 candidate GCs in NGC 6822 and nine in IC 10. Both galaxies have high specific frequencies ( S N ) for their luminosities but remain consistent with the known GC scaling relationships in the low-luminosity regime
