No full textThe Routledge Handbook of Language and Social Media around the World offers a comprehensive overview of this growing area of research through a global lens, aiming to decentre existing epistemologies and produce new lines of inquiry through a wider diversity of perspectives. With its aim of complicating and diversifying understandings of language and social media through approaches and frameworks developed both within and outside dominant North American and European traditions, the volume is organized around seven sections, each focused on a particular geocultural context. Theoretical and methodological innovations as well as case studies of language practices across Africa, the Americas, East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Oceania, and South Asia, which explore issues of diversities, inequalities, mobilities, creativities, and social justice, are featured. Each section includes a brief section introduction, written by a local editor with expertise in the region who brings together contributions in each section. The sections are conceived to be in dialogue with one another, reinforcing the book’s aims of generating new conversations around the decolonisation of applied linguistics. Shifting landscapes of war: Rome and twentieth century disillusionment
No full textThe First World War inspired artworks in which lived experiences were reimagined through visions of the classical world and while some of these guarded against despair others explored feelings of disillusionment. Painting and writing during the Second World War and beyond, and looking back past his own service in Ireland to his years in the trenches, David Jones (1895–1974) turned to ancient Rome to consider modern warfare. By reflecting upon the experience of Roman soldiers Jones attempted to come to terms with his own disillusionment with the British Empire and with the justifications made for the necessity of the First World War. His work provides complication to narratives of commemoration which support a fixed or stable vision of the past. Instead, Jones's memories of conflict gave transhistorical depth to his imagined Roman Empire – a creative landscape in which he could examine the causes and the costs of war

Asymptotic limits of the axisymmetric solution of the Brinkman equation for a point force near a no-slip wall
No full textWe derive the far-field and near-field solutions for the Green’s function of a point force acting perpendicular to a no-slip wall in a Brinkman fluid, focusing on the regime where the distance between the force and the wall is much smaller than the screening length. The general solution is obtained in closed form up to a single integral, and can be systematically expanded in a Taylor series in both the far-field and near-field limits. The flow can then be expressed as a series of source-multipole singularities with an additional, analytically known, correction in the proximity of the wall. Comparisons with numerical integration demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the asymptotic expansions. The results are also applicable to the unsteady Stokes flow driven by a localised assembly of forces, such as a beating cilium protruding from a flat surface
The Golf and Strength and Conditioning Coach Interface: A Model to Optimise Performance Support for Golfers
No full textThe benefits of strength and conditioning (S&C) for golf are well established in the empirical scientific evidence base. While more longitudinal training studies are required, recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses have confirmed the viability of S&C for golfers, particularly for improving clubhead speed, a critical performance determinant. Golfer support is also evolving, whereby the historic “team” of golfer and golf coach is expanded. Elite golfers seek additional coaching from various sport science disciplines including S&C in the quest for sustained optimal performance. However, until recently, how S&C integrates within an overall golf plan had not been considered. Our research addressed this knowledge gap. This article is the first to synthesise these findings, make practical recommendations for golfers and their support team and suggestions for future research. The article highlights a continued need for improved communication between S&C coach, golf coach, and golfer. The golfer’s wants and needs are not always aligned to those of the golf coach and the qualities the S&C coach needs to possess, vary depending on the perceptions and practices of the golf coach and/or golfer. The S&C coach also needs to be cognisant of their varying overall impact on performance potential in a highly technical sport

These cases reveal significant deficiencies—including poor board oversight, lack of transparency, and misuse of investor funds—that have undermined trust and stability in the financial ecosystem. By analyzing these failures, the chapter identifies critical lessons and emphasizes the need for robust governance frameworks, enhanced transparency mechanisms, and strengthened investor protections. Key recommendations include integrating RegTech solutions, embedding ESG principles, and fostering diverse board expertise to better address emerging risks and complexities in fintech operations. The chapter also emphasizes the importance of global collaboration in advancing regulatory reforms for the fintech sector. This analysis aims to guide fintech firms and policymakers in building a more resilient and sustainable fintech ecosystem
Key insights from the Open University's 2025 Student Experience of Feedback, Assessment, and Revision (SEFAR) undergraduate survey
No full textThe Student Experience of Feedback, Assessment and Revision (SEFAR) 2025 survey provides unique snapshot (N=675) and longitudinal (every 5 years) insight into OU undergraduate assessment sentiment and behaviour. Using over 100 measures of assessment experience, performance, competencies and motivation, the survey explores questions such as how well assessment functions as assessment for learning, what students would like future assessment to look like, and patterns of interaction, including with tutors and AI. Questions are designed with reference both to emerging institutional strategic issues and current themes in the educational research literature. SEFAR seeks to offer original perspectives and challenge institutional assumptions and practice. It is developed and led by IET in collaboration with the Assessment Programme.
SEFAR covers key periods of assessment: early understanding of standards and criteria, TMAs writing and submission, receiving and using feedback, contact and trust in tutor, end of module/exam assessment, and resits. It also measures assessment literacy, preference for new assessment approaches and authentic assessment, motivation, use of AI, comments about what works, and suggestions for improvement. Combined with demographic data and assessment scores, this provides a rich resource from which to examine many aspects of the online distance learning student assessment experience.
Comparisons with previous iterations of the survey support identification of trends and build confidence in the relationships and patterns identified. This perspective alone makes SEFAR unusual in the sector. Previous outputs from SEFAR1 (2015) and 2 (2020) have included internal reports, (P)VC briefings, research publications, faculty presentations, and invited talks. The SEFAR3 results will be of interest to a wide range of roles including policymaking and strategic planning, qualification leadership, module production, tutoring and student support, leading design, and scholarship of assessment practice. Our recommendations indicate there is substantial insight to be gained from further analysis alongside action that can be taken in response to the headline data reported
