Exploring World Englishes: Language in a Global Context
No full textThis new edition of Exploring World Englishes surveys varieties of English existing within the world today, and the debates and controversies surrounding its present forms, functions and status in diverse world contexts.
This book examines how English evolved to become ‘the global language’ and looks at the political and cultural history that influenced this evolution. Now in its second edition, this popular text has been substantially revised and updated to reflect the rapid developments in this area, including areas such as decolonisation, multilingualism and translanguaging, along with English as a Lingua Franca and its consequences for education. Spatiotemporal trends in <i>P. falciparum</i> malaria and identification of high-risk villages in Eastern Myanmar: an 8-year observational study
No full textOne barrier to achieving Plasmodium falciparum elimination is the persistence of villages where transmission remains high. While targeted interventions can effectively reduce transmission in these areas, identifying priority target villages is often resource-intensive. This study investigates the use of a geostatistical model to analyse routinely collected surveillance data and identify high-risk villages in Hpapun Township, Myanmar. A geostatistical model was fitted using routine surveillance data (2014-2021) collected from 507 village-based malaria posts to assess temporal changes in P. falciparum incidence and make incidence predictions while accounting for elevation, prior interventions and spatial correlation between villages. Between 2014 and 2019, P. falciparum incidence decreased by 93.9%. Villages that received targeted interventions were characterised by higher pre-intervention incidence (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 4.72, 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.56-4.90) relative to non-intervention villages and were associated with lower incidence post-intervention (IRR = 0.26, 95% CI 0.24-0.27). In 2021, 12 high-risk villages were identified, with a reported incidence exceeding the predicted incidence for at least three months, and eight villages were identified as persistently high-risk (≥ 90th percentile difference in at least six months). Our findings suggest that geostatistical modelling can be utilised to identify persistent high-risk villages, thereby efficiently supporting malaria elimination efforts
Modelling world Englishes for the twenty-first century
No full textIt is almost 40 years since Braj Kachru developed his Three Circles Model for world Englishes as a framework for exploring the ways in which English exists around the world. This article examines how the model holds up in light both of advances in applied linguistics and shifts in geopolitics over the past four decades and, in response to these changes, considers how we may wish to refine or reconfigure aspects of this model for the twenty-first century. The article illustrates the discussion with reference to an exploration of the concept of ‘China English’ as this exists today within the broader context of world Englishes
Polyunsaturated fatty acids mediate the antitumor effects of fasting by inducing lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis in breast cancer
No full textPublished preclinical studies showed that cyclic fasting or fasting-mimicking diets (FMDs) delay tumour progression and enhance survival in murine models of breast cancer. Our lipidomic analyses revealed that both fasting and FMDs lead to elevated plasma levels of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in mice and in patients with breast cancer. Gene set enrichment analysis of transcriptomic profiles from breast cancer samples of patients subjected to cyclic FMD showed a pronounced activation of fatty acid metabolism–related pathways. Here, we show that the anticancer effects of fasting are rescued if systemic lipolysis is inhibited and plasma fatty acid increase during fasting is prevented. Furthermore, the supplementation of an excess of PUFAs during in vitro or in vivo nutrient starvation results in highly cooperative antitumor effects that are mediated through a reduction of prealbumin, which diminishes the ability of cancer cells to counteract elevated mitochondrial ROS production, ultimately leading to lipid peroxidation and the induction of ferroptosis. These findings underscore the critical role of PUFAs in mediating the anticancer effects of fasting/FMDs and support the therapeutic potential of combining PUFA supplementation in combination with cyclic fasting as a safe and effective strategy for treating TNBC
The Quiet Resourcefulness of <i>Falderos</i>: Embodied Salesmanship in Motion
No full textThis paper advances a posthumanist approach to interaction by examining faldear—a pervasive yet analytically neglected form of ambulant vending in Buenos Aires’ underground trains and, more broadly, in public transport across the Global South. Drawing on video-ethnographic fieldwork, the study shows how falderos/as transform the moving, enclosed space of the carriage into a site of livelihood through embodied, materially distributed sales practices.
The analysis challenges speech-centred analyses of (sales) interactions in language and communication research. It demonstrates that rather than principally relying on speech, falderos/as mainly orchestrate transactions through bodily movement, tactile product placement, and the spatial choreography of proximity and attention. Products themselves function as communicative agents—capable of redirecting attention, mediating social distance, and organizing temporal coordination within a mobile ecology.
By tracing how these workers’ agency circulates through bodies, objects, and movement, the paper frames faldear as a materially mediated, emplaced and culturally embedded livelihood practice, extending sensory and object-mediated interaction to the contingencies of hidden economies. In doing so, the paper redefines how communicative agency in economic interaction can be theorised, positioning faldear as a relevant case for rethinking language, labour, and embodiment in motion
Olympic sport policy as a ‘sociological problem’
No full textGlobally, significant resources are allocated towards sporting success at the Olympic Games. Behind Team GB success, steadily increasing investment has seen many more people employed in Olympic sport, estimated at 471,957 roles (UK Sport & The Sports Consultancy, 2024). Yet relatively little research has sought to understand the experiences of those working in Olympic sport in managerial and administrative roles. Within this thesis, process sociology is used both as a sensitising concept to explore the Olympic sport policy process in the UK and as a theoretical framework to guide the method design. This process sociology inspired approach focuses on long-term processes, interdependencies, power relations, and emotions.
The study draws on a multi-method approach consisting of 27 semi-structured interviews with senior national governing body figures conducted between 2020 and 2023, a review of 108 policy documents, and a reflective journal maintained by the author as a sport policy professional. The timing of this research coincided with major global and domestic events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit, and the postponed Tokyo Olympics. Following reflexive thematic analysis, three interrelated themes were generated: the unique ‘British State’s relationship with Olympic sport policy’, policy workers ‘playing the game’, and the ‘personal impact and personal cost’ on them.
The policy process is presented as an evolving figuration of interdependent actors shaped by shifting power balances, institutional histories, and emotional investments. Furthermore, policy implementation is bound up in personal stories, interpersonal struggles, and invisible emotional labour. Policy actors emerge as individuals enmeshed in complex figurations, at once shaping and shaped by institutional structures. This deep level of involvement has implications both for the policy process and for each individual’s well-being. This research contributes new knowledge to understanding policy work and policy workers in Olympic sport in the UK, with implications for research and practice
Iterated function systems of holomorphic maps
No full textWe unify and advance a host of works on iterated function systems of holomorphic self-maps of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. Our foremost result is a generalisation to left iterated function systems of an unpublished and little known theorem of Heins on iteration in the unit disc. Applications abound - to work of Benini et al. on transcendental dynamics, to the theory of hyperbolic steps of holomorphic maps, and to left semiconjugacy in the unit disc. We extend other work of Benini et al. and Ferreira on relatively compact left iterated function systems, and we prove a hyperbolic distance inequality for holomorphic maps that generalises a theorem of Bracci, Kraus, and Roth. Additionally, we strengthen results of the first author and Christodoulou on left iterated function systems, removing the need for Bloch domains, and we answer an open question from their work. Finally, we establish a version of the Heins theorem for right iterated functions systems, and we generalise theorems of Beardon and Kuznetsov on right iterated function systems in relatively compact semigroups of holomorphic maps
