No full textThis chapter analyzes social identity in relation to work and organizations from a critical theoretical perspective. It focuses on social identity theory (SIT), which has become one of the most dominant perspectives in the study of organizational behavior. Despite its obvious utility, social identity theory’s roots in experimental and survey-based methods and the prominence of social cognition present several problems when interpreting the complex nature of identity in and around work and organizations. We focus on three problematic areas within the organizational and workplace SIT research: cognitivism and dualism, downplaying emotional aspects of identity, and functionalism and the foreclosing of power and ideology in shaping identity. The chapter points to alternative critical approaches to identity processes at work and in organizations. It concludes by proposing that critical work and organizational psychology should focus on the link between identity and ideology, while prioritizing the study of subjectivity
Messages to the future? Lesbian subversion of official categories in the 1921 UK census
No full textThis article considers how Britain's 1921 census can be a source for histories of lesbian activism. It explores evidence that the census returns were a site of lesbian resistance and considers the implications for our own histories and understandings of activism. It asks whether these official forms can be considered as messages from our forebears to the future, and what that means for our activism today.
The 1921 census form required everyone present in a household on the night of 19 June to be recorded, and their relationship to its ‘head’ to be stated: a process of categorization which reified patriarchal family relations. However, a small number of women – some known to have been in committed relationships with each other - rejected the official directions in favour of their own relationship categories including ‘joint head’ or ‘joint occupier’. They did so in a context where their relationships were legally unspeakable, hierarchies of gender were intimately entwined with those of sexuality and race, and the heteronormative family was positioned as central to the survival of the nation.
Their rebellions are both a form of activism and an archive within an archive, allowing historians to capture experiences which might otherwise be unrecorded. In a time where patriarchal hierarchies are being reasserted, listening to these messages from the past has taken on new urgency
The architecture of floral diversity: a bipartite network of flower morphology in the Neotropical rainforest of Barro Colorado Island, Panama
No full textFlower morphology varies greatly between different plant taxa, and the variety of flower types has stimulated a number of different approaches to the analysis of floral form. In this paper we have thought of flower morphology as a network, with individual morphological characters and taxa linked as a system. We scored the flowers of 951 species of plants in a Neotropical rainforest (Barro Colorado Island, Panama) for 9 discrete characters that have a total of 35 character states and constructed a bipartite network connecting nodes representing species to nodes representing morphological characters. The basic unit of this bipartite network is a single node that is connected to nine other nodes: a star. The creation of larger networks results in variation in network architecture, which arises as a consequence of the patterns of connectivity between taxa and morphological characters. We find that the network of BCI flower morphology is characterised by disassortative mixing in which nodes with high degree are preferentially connected to nodes with low degree. From an architectural perspective this is a consequence of the prevalence of stars in our networks. The floral characters we have analysed here are distributed non-randomly among five plant groups on BCI: herbs, lianas, epiphytes, shrubs and trees. Trees show a negative association with sympetaly, zygomorphy and epigyny while herbs show the opposite patterns of association. From an ecological perspective this means that the most common individual characters are only rarely combined into a single flower

Diagnostic usefulness of immunohistochemical evaluation of CD1a antigen and polyclonal anti-leishmania antibodies in cutaneous leishmaniasis
No full textBackground: Different immunohistochemical markers to detect amastigotes in cutaneous leishmaniasis have been proposed with variable diagnostic usefulness. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of immunohistochemical amastigotes identification by specific polyclonal anti-Leishmania antibodies and CD1a expression (clone EP3622) in a series of PCR confirmed cutaneous leishmaniasis. Materials and methods: Thirty-three skin samples corresponding to PCR confirmed cutaneous leishmaniasis were included in the study. All samples were stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and Giemsa. Moreover, immunohistochemical studies with anti-CD1a and anti-Leishmania antibodies were performed. The patients clinical features and the observed histopathological features were also recorded. Results: From the selected 33 biopsies, Leishmania spp. amastigotes were detected in 48.4% of cases with conventional Hematoxylin-eosin stain and in 57.5% of cases by Giemsa staining. In 31/33 cases, anti-CD1a allowed us to identify parasitic structures, and in 33/33 cases amastigotes were detected with anti-Leishmania antibodies. Concordance between both techniques, anti-CD1a and anti-Leishmania, was 94% [CI 95%: (79,8%-99,3%)] ; p value <0.05. The sensitivity of anti-CD1a in comparison with the PCR was 94%, with a positive predictive value of 100%. Two cases of low parasitic index were negative for CD1a immunostaining. In cases with high parasitic index, anti-CD1a stained amastigotes in superficial and deep dermis. Only a few cases were originally diagnosed with the available histological techniques, needing PCR for Leishmania spp. Conclusions: Anti-CD1a antibody seems to be a useful technique to identify amastigotes when PCR and anti-Leishmania antibodies are not available. The sensitivity to detect amastigotes is increased when the CD1a immunostaining is added to the classical Haematoxylin - eosin and Giemsa staining
