Polymorphisms cyclooxygenase-2 -765G>C and interleukin-6 -174G>C are associated with serum inflammation markers in a high cardiovascular risk population and do not modify the response to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with virgin olive oil or nuts
No full textInflammation is involved in cardiovascular diseases. Some studies have found that the Mediterranean diet (MD) can reduce serum concentrations of inflammation markers. However, none of these studies have analyzed the influence of genetic variability in such a response. Our objective was to study the effect of the -765G.C polymorphism in the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene and the -174G.C polymorphism in the interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene on serum concentrations of IL-6, C-reactive protein, intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 as well as their influence on the response toa nutritional interventionwithMD.An intervention study ina high cardiovascular riskMediterranean population (314 men and 407 women) was undertaken. Participants were randomly assigned to consume a low-fat control diet or a MD supplementedwith virgin olive oil ornuts.Measureswereobtained at baseline and after a 3-mointervention period.At baseline, the COX-2 -765G.C polymorphismwas associated with lower serum IL-6 (5.85 6 4.82 in GG vs. 4.74 6 4.14 ng/L in C-allele carriers; P ¼ 0.002) and ICAM-1 (265.8 6 114.8 in GG vs. 243.0 6 107.1 mg/L in C-carriers; P ¼ 0.018) concentrations. These differences remained significant aftermultivariate adjustment. The IL-6 -174G.C polymorphism was associatedwith higher (CC vs. G-carriers) serumICAM-1concentrations in bothmenandwomenandwithhigherserumIL-6 concentrations inmen.Following the dietary intervention, no significant gene x diet interactions were found. In conclusion, although COX-2 -765G.C and IL-6 -174G.C polymorphismswere associatedwith inflammation, consuming aMD(either supplemented with virgin olive oil or nuts) reduced the concentration of inflammation markers regardless of these polymorphisms

Lanthanide molecules for spin-based quantum technologies
No full textSince the molecular electronic spin emerged as one of the promising technologies to implement the quantum processing of information, coordination complexes of lanthanides and actinides have become protagonists as suitable molecular realizations of qubits and qugates. In this chapter, we revise the most recent developments on the production of rare earth (RE) based qubits, qugates and most recently qudits, which also make use of the nuclear spin degrees of freedom to encode and process quantum information. Essential concepts such as the spin relaxation and the phase memory times in these systems are described, as well as the development of multiqubit molecular systems for the realization of basic quantum gate operations. The most advanced achievements consisting on the realization of the Grover algorithm or the demonstration of a quantum error correction protocol constitute the culmination of this chapter, which concludes with the challenges yet lying ahead for implementing the molecular spin as an essential component of quantum computin
Biostratigraphical characteristics of the oligocene sequences on North-Eastern Spain (Ebro and Campins Basins)
No full textA preliminary report on the work developed in the last years in the continental beds in the Ebro basin is presented. The find of more than twenty new localities with micromammal remains and the new samplings in some older ones (Santpedor, Calaf, Tarrega, etc.) enable us the establishment of a continuous sequence with good stratigraphic control from the Upper Eocene (Sant Cugat de Gavadons) to the Lower Miocene (Sta. Cilia). Eleven range zones, covering the mentioned time span are defined: Theridomys golpeae, T. aH. aquatilis, T. calafensis, T. major, T. aH. major, Eomys zitteli, E. major, E. aft. major, Rhodanomys transiens, R. schlosseri and Ebromys autolensis. More intensive sampling, particularly between the Theridomys major and the Eomys zitteli zones, is needed in the future to arrive to a continuous section covering the whole Oligocene

No full textPrevious midterm follow-up reports after implantation of the Absorb everolimus-eluting bioresorbable scaffold (BRS; Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, CA, USA) in stable coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndrome have shown an increase of scaffold thrombosis leading to an excess of the device-oriented composite endpoint (DOCE: a composite of cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction [TVMI], and clinically driven target lesion revascularisation [CD-TLR])1. In contrast, in the six-month primary report of ABSORB STEMI: the TROFI II Study (NCT01986803)2, which randomised patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) to receive either the Absorb BRS or the XIENCE metallic everolimus-eluting stent (EES; Abbott Vascular), optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI)-derived healing score was comparable between the BRS arm and the EES arm. The aim of this report was to present the three-year clinical outcome results of the BRS and the metallic EES at the time when full resorption of the scaffold device can be expected

No full textEste trabajo analiza los perfiles de los grupos de investigación de una universidad pública de gran dimensión, con el fin de identificar los factores que hacen ser mejores a unos grupos que a otros, desde el punto de vista de sus resultados. Sobre un conjunto de más de treinta variables se realiza un análisis factorial para identificar aquellas que son mas relevantes reduciéndolas a diecinueve variables y agruparlas en cuatro grupos, caracterizados respectivamente por la estabilidad laboral de sus integrantes, el tamaño del grupo, la calidad y la cantidad de su producción ..

Aquesta és la pregunta que va haver de resoldre el Tribunal Suprem espanyol, que va plantejar una sèrie de qüestions relacionades amb la qualificació jurídica d'aquestes relacions personals (essent el debat diferent a Catalunya) i, el que és més important, el contingut i extensió d'aquestes relacions personals. Encara que aquest conflicte es va plantejar en un determinat moment on no es podia parlar de doble maternitat, aquest cas permet analitzar les últimes reformes en matèria de filiació assistida, així com fer una sèrie d'observacions en torn de la maternitat social.[eng] Within a same-sex female couple, when one of the women decides to have a child via assisted reproduction, may the non-biological partner claim visitation rights with the child, once the couple breaks up? This is the case brought to the Spanish Supreme Court. Several issues were raised as to the theoretical basis of this claim and, more importantly, the content, duration and frequency of these personal visitation rights. Even though the conflict arose at a time when same-sex partners could not have legal links with the child, this case allows an analysis of the latest reforms in assisted reproduction, as well as some comments about social motherhood
