The Impact of Waste Management on Green Spaces and Community Well-being: A Case Study of Wa Municipality, Upper West, Ghana
No full textUrbanization in Low- and Middle-Income Countries such as Ghana has placed immense pressure on infrastructure, waste management systems, and urban green spaces. This study examines the impact of waste management practices on green spaces and community well-being in Wa Municipal, focusing on four communities: Dondoli, Mangu, Dokpong, and Bamahu. Using a participatory research approach, data collected from waste management authorities, sanitation agencies, and residents were used to examine waste composition, health impacts, and community engagement in environmental sustainability. The findings reveal that organic waste and plastics dominate waste composition, with inadequate disposal practices contributing to pollution and health issues, including respiratory and skin diseases. Gender disparities in waste management roles were identified, with women largely responsible for household waste disposal. The degradation of green spaces in Bamahu and Dondoli negatively affects social cohesion and economic activities, while Dokpong and Mangu, with well-maintained green spaces, experience improved environmental and community well-being. The study emphasizes the importance of implementing structured waste management systems, community-led conservation efforts, and economic incentives to promote sustainable waste practices. Key recommendations include the establishment of designated waste collection points, municipal composting programs, formalized communal labor structures, and the integration of policies with local governance frameworks. These findings align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals on sustainable cities, climate action, and life on land, providing evidence-based strategies for fostering urban resilience and ecological sustainability in Wa Municipality
Corporate Social Responsibility and Founder Legacy Dynamics Around Succession: An Intertemporal Choice Perspective
No full textAre family firms socially responsible? Leveraging behavioral theories of inter temporal choice, we argue that CSR evolves across different stages of succession. As founders approach retirement and identify successors, their desire to enhance their legacy grows, leading to an increase in CSR. Founders during this stage benefit from the satisfaction of passing on a responsible business. However, as heirs join the business, CSR declines as their legacy is far off. Our research on 2,072 listed Chinese family firms supports this multi-stage view, which is truer for older and first-born founders and younger heirs, heirs with shorter tenures, and those without children. © 2025, Academy of Management. A data envelopment analysis-based methodology for ranking cities and prioritizing urban criteria
No full textThis paper proposes a methodology for ranking cities and prioritizing the criteria that influence these rankings within a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework. A composite Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model is developed to generate a fully ranked list of cities, ensuring robustness through data-driven and non-arbitrary weight assignments. Additionally, fixed-effects and random-effects models are employed to identify the criteria significantly impacting city rankings over time. The performance of these models is compared using the Hausman, Dickey-Fuller, and Breusch-Pagan tests. By analyzing large U.S. cities at five-year intervals from 2000 to 2020, this study determines city rankings and evaluates the influence of various quality-of-life criteria. The results show that cost of living, education, and income have the most substantial impacts on city rankings. These insights offer valuable guidance for policymakers aiming to improve urban socio-economic and environmental attributes. Furthermore, they provide businesses with critical information for strategic planning, market analysis, human resource management, and sustainable development. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025
