Self-Supervised Representation Learning for Human Activity Recognition Using Inertial Sensor Data
This paper proposes a self-supervised learning framework for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) using inertial sensor data, aiming to reduce dependency on large labeled datasets. Leveraging contrastive learning and a hybrid encoder consisting of 1D convolutional layers and a bidirectional LSTM, the model learns meaningful representations from unlabeled time-series data through a pretext task of distinguishing between augmented views of the same sequence. Extensive experiments on the UCI HAR Dataset demonstrate that our approach achieves a test accuracy of 94.72%, surpassing several supervised baselines such as CNN (91.46%), LSTM (92.35%), and Transformer (93.24%)., and Transformer (93.24 %). The model also achieves a macro-averaged F1-score of 94.45% and AUROC of 97.36%, indicating strong class separability and generalization. Furthermore, it maintains robust performance under noisy and incomplete sensor inputs, with only minor degradations observed under Gaussian noise (F1-score drops to 89.41%) and random dropout (87.93%). These results highlight the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed method for real-world HAR applications, especially in scenarios with limited annotated data. © 2025 IEEE
A GIS Method to Summarize Changes Among Classes During a Time Series With an Application to Land Cover in Western Bahia, Brazil
Petabytes of raster maps exist that show numerous classes across a series of many time points. Scientists need new methods to summarize the temporal changes so scientists can understand broad patterns and have guidance for how to look deeper into particular places, trajectories, classes, and time intervals. Our manuscript addresses this need by presenting an innovative method that summarizes the temporal changes in terms of a map of four trajectories and bar charts of five components: quantity, allocation exchange, allocation shift, alternation exchange, and alternation shift. An application illustrates the method using 16 land cover classes at 7 time points from 1990 to 2020 in western Bahia, Brazil. Results reveal a substantial component of alternation shift, which exists when pixels transition from savanna to temporary crops to soybean. Protocol for a hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation trial of a mind-body activity program for older adults with chronic pain in a medically underserved area: The iHOPE study
Background: Older adults in medically underserved areas (MUAs) are disproportionately affected by chronic musculoskeletal pain but lack access to safe, evidence-based psychosocial treatments. Staff at community clinics, where many disadvantaged older adults receive care, must manage complex pain needs and comorbidities with limited time and resources. Shared medical visits integrate medical care, education, and peer support, offering a feasible, scalable solution to overcome barriers associated with chronic pain management in primary care. We previously developed GetActive+, an intervention delivered through shared medical visits at a community clinic to teach mind-body and activity skills to older adults with chronic pain. Here, we describe the protocol for a fully powered hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing GetActive+ to treatment as usual (TAU). Methods: We will recruit 200 English and Spanish-speaking older adult patients from two Massachusetts community clinics located in an MUA. We will assess multimodal physical function and psychosocial outcomes at baseline, post-intervention (11 weeks), and follow-up (6 months). Effectiveness will be determined by improvements in self-reported physical function post-intervention compared to TAU. Using mixed methods, we will assess implementation outcomes (feasibility, acceptability, fidelity, and adoption) at patient, provider, and organizational levels. Results: The trial is ongoing. We have enrolled 54 older adults, 21 of whom have completed post-intervention assessments. Conclusion: We describe the implementation and evaluation of a mind-body activity intervention for older adults with chronic pain using shared medical visits. Results will inform subsequent implementation and dissemination efforts of GetActive+ in community clinics across the United States. Clinical Trials Registration Number: NCT06119698. © 202
Copper(II) complexes of hindered diazines: tetramethylpyrazine
Two copper(II) complexes of 2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine (tmpz) are reported, [Cu(tmpz)Cl2]n (1), and [Cu(tmpz)Br2]n (2). The compounds crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/m as pyrazine-bridged linear chains (parallel to the b-axis). The pyrazine rings are oriented nearly perpendicular to the CuN2X2 coordination planes. Adjacent chains parallel to the a-axis are offset by ½ unit cell translation parallel to the b-axis rendering the closest interchain X…X contact distance to be 4.83(2) Å (1) or 4.59(1) Å (2). Parallel to the c-axis, the chains are further separated by the methyl groups. Magnetic interactions for 2 are well fit by the uniform Heisenberg chain model with a Curie-Weiss correction for interchain interactions giving: J/kB = −19.2(1) K, Curie constant (CC) = 0.451(1) emu-K/mol-Oe and θ = −0.18(1) K
The interwoven self: A qualitative study on the intersectionality of social identities and bicultural belonging among muslim emerging adults in Italy
Integrating a coherent image of oneself is a key issue in emerging adulthood, especially for an expanding population of immigrant Muslim emerging adults worldwide who navigate the complexities of more than one social identity. While extensive research highlights the presence of multiple social identities, less is known about the intersection of these identities–specifically ethnic, national, and religious–across diverse social contexts. The present qualitative, interview-based study explores how these social identities intersect across various social settings–home, school, work, and social circles–and how these intersections relate to the bicultural belonging (heritage and host culture) among 100 Muslim emerging adults residing in Italy. Results of the thematic content analysis revealed that participants employed social context-dependent strategies to reconcile their social identities. Some integrated their religious, ethnic, and national identities, others experienced a shift, and some felt alienated from their faith, which, in turn, contributed to bicultural belonging. The findings highlight the intersectionality and evolving nature of social identities across diverse social contexts, and their role in contributing to bicultural belonging. Implications for theory and practice are discussed
“I Always Viewed Myself as a Parent”: An Intersectional Family Systems Approach to Parenting Among Latinx Sexually Diverse People
Much of the research focusing on LGBTQ parenting has focused on White parents. This is concerning given that LGBTQ families are more racially and ethnically diverse than heterosexual households, with Latinx queer parents comprising most LGBTQ parents raising children. In turn, there is a lack of research about the cultural experiences that inform parenting among Latinx LGBTQ parents. This study uses a family systems intersectional lens to explore how Latinx and LGBTQ cultural values guide the parenting practices of Latinx LGBTQ parents. Eight participants completed semi-structured interviews in which they were asked to reflect and share how Latinx and LGBTQ cultural values inform their parenting experiences. Using a phenomenological qualitative research approach, Latinx LGBTQ parents described their parenting experience and identified the underlying cultural messages that inform them, including (a) Familismo, (b) Gender Norms, (c) Religion and Spirituality, (d) Openness, Support, and Pride, (e) Embracing Chosen Families, and (f) Providing a Different Parenting Experience. Policymakers and treatment providers can use these findings that capture ethnic, cultural, and sexual identity factors for Latinx LGBTQ parents and consider the best approaches to working with these communities using a strong intersectionality lens. © 2025 Family Process Institute
